BEST RIM PROTECTION EXPERIMENT: Real World Testing and Comparison

This is probably my favorite experiment so far and the results are already extremely interesting and surprising. This was originally going to be two separate videos, but I am lazy at editing and ended up just throwing them both together since I had already finished filming the 5 week update before I even started editing the first part. See the time stamps in the video description to hop to what you want to see. Tried to really break it apart for people.
Anyway, I start by going through all the products and show the applications and my initial thoughts. Really not too much to call out. They all applied very easily and anyone could do it. Some felt a bit slicker than others and most beaded very well initially as shown in the first water beading testing section. I throw around the word beading and sheeting a lot in this. Generally in this I was looking for beading vs the sheeting effect like shown on the control although it is not what really would be called "good" sheeting properties. The water simply pools and runs off, not like actually good sheeting that removes water entirely from an area. So please ignore my poor use of the word sheeting repeatedly here.
The real interesting part of the experiment is the one month update. The variations in build up were very surprising, especially the Sonax. I have no idea what about it caused this, but the Sonax Rim Shield had some amazing build up repellant properties. Most of the other coatings/sealants/waxes performed relatively the same with the one thing of note being Kamikaze Stance had a bit more build up than some of the other true ceramic coatings. After pressure washing, the true ceramic coatings and the couple of waxes definitely seemed to perform a bit better and shed more of their contaminants than some others. Everything else definitely needed scrubbing with soap. After scrubbing with soap and a microfiber mitt, pretty much everything became clean without too much effort.
For the one month beading test, the most surprising results were probably that Detailing Product's and Pinnacle Black Label's Wheel Coatings seemed to have already failed for the most part. The Turllin coating from Alibaba is still going very strong and looking as good as anything else and the true ceramic coatings are all going strong as well of course. Fusso Coat and Collonite 476s are both going great as well. Most other things still look about the same as initially with less crazy beading properties than the aforementioned ones.
The car has to go in storage now so there will not be another update until spring. I wonder if anything will change after just sitting over winter. I'll have an update on that when I pull it out next year.

    I ceramic coat everything. Cars, wheels, windows, snow plows/blowers, my snowmobile and ATVs, boat, wife, first born son. You cannot beat this stuff. Seriously alien technology.

    Really good video. I actually think hydrophobic coatings make it so that light water such as rain can't clean off the brake dust as easily. I noticed this on my windshield with a ceramic coating. It was so hydrophobic the windshield washer fluid didn't really clean bugs off well anymore because the surface is not easily wet unless it's totally flooded. The Sonax might be a hydrophilic type coating. The Fusso did well probably because it's fluorinated and more omniphobic.

    Now this a good example of products reviews! I wish all product reviews are like this. Show how to use, use it, and then include the results AFTER using it. Most, if not all others just show you how to use. Missing the most important of all- how did the product perform after using it? Thanks so much for this video. It's one-of-a-kind!

    Great job! I have tried a few coating u used they were all pretty good. Here is something crazy there is a Japanese pro line called kisho its $10 for the wheel coating but shipping is expensive but it’s best I used it is a self level coating you apply like stance one direction and then don’t touch it. The coat it leave is so much thicker and more durable it’s like opti clear coat restorer but leaves a ceramic clear coat. It was very unique.

    That Alibaba stuff is unreal, I mean for like 8 bucks why not give it a shot. Just got a brand new 24 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and that's what is going on the rims. Was thinking Gyeon Rim as I'm a fan of their other products but come on, how could I not at least give Turllin a go?

    I used the Gyeon mohs on my rims as I had fair bit left over after doing car. And after a year they still as good as new with just basic cleaning. Glass black wheels too so there not the easiest to keep clean without some sort of coating.

    I just ordered a new set of Forged BBS wheels for my ‘21 STI… they are arriving w/o tires. If I do the ceramic coating before the tires are put on will the weight stickers adhere to the wheels properly when they are balanced or do I need to do the ceramic coating after the wheels are balanced?

  • @SourceGarage

    @SourceGarage

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would let them be balanced first. It shouldn't really effect the weight stickers adhesion, but I wouldn't want those hands and whatever else will touch the rim in the balancing process to mess up your coating. By coating after you can polish out any imperfections from the balancing process and start with a perfect finish and coating

    @@SourceGarage makes sense. I ended up going with the Kamikaze ceramic wheel coating, I appreciate the info! I’m using my factory Yokohama Advan tires on the new wheels and since they are currently on the car it might be a hassle to do the coating after they are installed. As long as the balancing magnets don’t fall off I should be good lol. I’d like to find some balancing magnets that aren’t bright silver for my new wheels tho.
