    Why is this stuff so complicated. Why aren’t there well established standards that all the big manufacturers use and automate this whole thing, it’s 2020 man.

  • @redrooster303

    @redrooster303

    Why? Because companies like Samsung want to make money from their ''better' ways of doing it. There is HGIG but again Samsung thinks people should use their algorithm/features/settings. No doubt their will be standards at some point but not while companies can make 'new' features to sell TVs and gimp others.

    Great work as usual sir. I tried this method and immediately got a sure improvement in quality. However im pretty certain my nu8500 is just shy of 1000 nits peak say 800ish nits. So should i try and click my way to an 800nit equivalent on my xbox to try and get a good base line setting for all games? Lastly regarding the dark side of the calibration, should i follow the instructions or just go as low as the calibrator allows as ive seen u do in other videos? Thanks for your work and entertainment.

    @HDTVTest /Vincent According to your chart...didn’t it seem (Q85T) to start rolling off at around 680 nits give or take? You said, “1,000” nits... Just a little confused here. Bc the chart is contradicting what you’re saying. I can see the DTM dimming and brightening, or adjusting APL really bad on the Q85T. I see this on my CX whenever I use DTM. However, it really doesn’t bother me, and doesn’t seem to be as noticeable as it is on this set. I have a question regarding GT Sport. Maybe you can test it. I’m on the PS4 Pro tho....This game is very tricky on the CX. It has very odd behavior when using HGIG. So if you set the peak brightness to 4, which is what you get when following the in game calibration screen. However, you get clipping when set this way. What’s so weird, is you actually maintain more specular highlights details when setting peak brightness to 10. This is clearly visible when looking at the sun and clouds, if you pause a race at the right spot, and enter the HDR settings while racing.... I almost prefer DTM for GT Sport on the CX. It does result in maintaining more specular highlights. It also makes sunny days look more like a sunny day, rather than a cloudy overcast ones. Of course, I know DTM Isn’t “accurate”, but it seems to do a better job here, for this game. Of course it sacrifices APL for those specular highlights, and I can see it dimming when messing with the peak brightness setting when using DTM. For instance, setting peak brightness at 4, results in a brighter picture/APL when look at a very bright specular highlight, like the sun...and when you change it to 8 or 10, you can see the screen dim down. When actually racing, I see this happening, but it doesn’t really bother me. Tho HGIG maintains a consistent APL, with the result of slight specular highlight clipping. Maybe you can test this game and make a video, or give me some insight. I really struggle with which mode (DTM or HGIG) to use for this game. I usually don’t care for DTM, but for this game, I kinda do.

    Again I will ask this because I can't seem to find the answer. Are the number of clicks static across all TVs? For example is 1 click always raising it the same value? Because on my tv on the ps5 I have to click around 25 times to make the sun barely visible. On your other video setting up hdr calibration on ps5 at around 7 click you hit 400 nits which is the peak brightness of my tv. The sun is completely visible on my tv at 7 click or even 8 or 9 clicks like in this video. So do I just count clicks and estimate or go by eye till they are invisible?

    Thank you for testing this Vincent, I always thought there was something weird happening with tone mapping for HDR even when HGiG was engaged I just could never put my finger on it. I setup a buddy of mine's Q80T and I noticed it had some hiccups with HDR getting to look right I had one of my viewers comment something similar as well. However I didn't seem to have that issue on the Q90T personally did some early testing on the Q90T I definitely would say these settings you tested are definitely more specific to the Q80T like you said in your video. Using games that have a peak brightness slider I can say I definitely got more accurate results at around 2000 nits before I was even close to blowing out the highlights which actually does make sense because the peak brightness is much higher on the Q90T (thought it does greatly depend on the game ive yet to test Forza which I plan on testing tonight). As far as the HGiG setup goes I am still toying with that its hard to get accurate as I don't have a reference monitor to go off of, so I am really just using my eyes and clicks to make the judgement I will say that even when I get it to completely disappear it doesn't appear to blow out the highlights much if at all so maybe the Q80T has some extra tone mapping going on that persists through HGiG although even with Q90T it does take quite a few clicks to get it to be completely white so either thats because its has a higher max peak brightness or because its got the same tone mapping as the Q80T but on the Q90T highlights weren't blown out like your testing showed I think more testing definitely has to be done. I tested Gears 5, COD, Immortals Fenyx Rising, and AC Valhalla. I will continue to do testing on this for the Q90T and ill specifically try out Forza tonight. I imagine results will vary from game to game. Thanks for raising awareness on this for Q80T owners specifically as what you shown seems to be pretty impactful. As always you have been a treasure to have for years in this KZread space and I greatly appreciate and respect what you do for our community.

    Update: I tested Forza, I couldn't get it to get as dark in the same scene using the same settings it really didn't effect brightness much at all on the Q90T for the actual in game image which I found weird because, I do think there is definitely tone mapping going on in the Q90T as well because the slider wouldn't clip till about 6600 so this backs up what Vincent was saying about it tone mapping the grayscale image in the brightness slider unless theres something with the Forza HDR settings (reason I say this because other games I tested like Immortals Fenyx Rising at 2000 nits and 0 exposure looked fantastic with no blown out highlights, not sure if this game is HGiG I compliant, I dont believe it is). Alarming though that there does seem to be some tone mapping happening especially on the calibration tool. This is definitely not how HGiG should work. I may have found a way to trick the system a bit in the HGiG setup Xbox HDR Calibration, thought that tool is pretty buggy in itself ill try to put it all together in a video. I really feel like they likely added some tone mapping that can't be disabled fully in a firmware update somewhere along the lines as game mode picture quality has changed a lot since the Q90T launch (a lot of it was for the better it seemed but this tone mapping is definitely troublesome if we have no way to disable it) Again thanks Vincent.

So if you have that game it may respond a little better. Also, am I correct in thinking that a "click" is 50 nits? So 22 clicks for the rtings review of the Q90T peak brightness of 1407 nits and then 34 clicks for 2000 nits?

    My old KS8000 behaves similarly, though not quite the same. I can reach the white point on both systems, but 1000 and default in most HDR games that have their own settings is about right. I do struggle with having to darken the image down in Forza Horizon 4 and 15-20 works for me. One strange thing about the KS8000 is that, if I set Dynamic Contrast to high, then lower contrast to 75, my white point goes from 1000-ish to about 4000. If it didn't drain the color a bit, the huge gains in lighting elements would be quite enjoyable.

    I think the 2nd pattern MAXTML is max brightness 10% window,on my qn90b that's 1952nits in game mode and the 3nd,MaxFFTML is max full screen brightness which for my qn90b is around 650 nits.So why would I set them to 1000 on both when there isn't a tv out there that can put out 1000 nit full screen.Am I missing something. Someone please correct me...

    you think logically, but there are some conditions with a constantly running DTM that applies to a specific TV series. Timmy Bouchard: Why 1000 nits if the 80t max hdr peak brightness is about 900 and even less for some testers? Thank you ! Mipha: Dynamic Tone Mapping is working alk the time. And with 1000 you hit a good value overall for the dtm.

    Vincent - Do you recommend setting the PS5 input to PC mode on LG CX? It limits the Dynamic Tone Mapping to “On” or “Off” instead of “HGIG” which is supposed to be more accurate. If that’s the case, is PC mode worthwhile for color accuracy sake if gaming only?

    after testing this setting on Sony's XH90 / Xbox OneX, the result is strange. The colors are much brighter and less washed out, but the shine has less impact. the faded effect has totally disappeared on red dead redemption 2 by following your settings. This setting of 14 clicks = 1000Nits, is a universal setting? or a setting specific to the samsung tv ? Thank you.

But still, I think I haven't figured out the best calibration, as the TV is different. Auto function for color space on Samsung TV is completely broken. Instead of automatically detecting the incoming signal and matching it's color space the TV is always using the color space which is picked in CUSTOM setting of this feature If you have chosen DCI-P3, AUTO will exactly output DCI-P3. If you have chosen BT.2020, AUTO will exactly output BT.2020. I'm facing this issue on my Q70A and it seems 2020 models are having the same issue like the Q80T and Q90T Now my question is, what "Auto" is more accurate for gaming (in general) and specially for PS5? Auto fom DCI-P3 color gamut or Auto from BT.2020?

  • @ULTIMBANGA

    @ULTIMBANGA

    2 жыл бұрын

    I noticed that too (long time ago) with my 2018 Samsung QLED TV. I am happy to not be alone. I choose auto from BT.2020 picked in custom because with DCI-P3 the colors are brightened and less accurate to me. You can test it by watching your apps on PS5 : use youtube and netflix logos for reference. These logos have to be red and not orange. I compared also for hours with many contents and colors, especially Rocket league on my PC (monitor) and console (xbox) side by side (training solo and watching the UI boost jauge, grass etc..). DCI-P3 appears to be more vibrant but colors are incorrect in my eyes. For SDR content it is a bit different. I set the TV to NATIVE because with AUTO the same lightening/washed (red become orange...) appears. So I don't use auto in SDR settings. Note that you should not set NATIVE with HDR content because this time, colors are too "colored" and if you watch a human face in a video/movie for exemple, lips and generally all skins are too pink/red. Fortunately the settings between HDR and SDR are independent, so you don't have to change all the time. If your TV works the same as mine, I hope it can help you, even after 6 months after you asked. *small secondary note : I set color to Warm 1 (warm 2 is too yellow for me and standard is too blue-ish and greens like grass display a bit fluorescent in my opinion) and gamma to 2 (for more contrast punch but maybe it is a personal preference). (don't mind my grammar, I'm not a native English speaker/writer, cheers)

    @s_s_j21-psn53 Sorry for the late reply. It's much better based on Vincent's suggestions. As he said, Samsung needs to disable DTM entirely when toggling HGIG to on. HGIG calibration tools still don't work great with Samsung QLED panels as of the latest firmware. However, with regards to the Xbox Series X, if you click down all four trigger buttons in the HDR calibration tool, you'll be able to see the nit measurements which makes it much easier. Make sure that HGIG is on and use 1000, 1000, 0 and you're all set!
