Thanks for this review. When I purchased this book I was in the beginner stage and the number of steps to achieve a pattern seemed a bit daunting, so i put the book down. However since then I’ve become more confident in my sewing and have a better understanding or idea of what’s going on, and I’m also looking for a more refined fit. I’m thinking it’s time to start using this book. Your explanation of the book is spot on. Looking forward to more of your vids

You’re very welcome! I think a lot of books are quite intimidating if you’re only just starting, I always think it’s best to start with a teacher, so you have the basics and then go to the books for more ideas and reference. Enjoy your drafting!

I just purchased the sixth edition of this book, and I am so excited to jump in. I have a quick question... In the instructions for drafting the blocks there are directions like "half of hip measurement minus 5cm". I am unclear about when I remove the 5 cm... Before or after I divide by two? If my hips are 100cm, is this line 45 cm (100/2-5) or 47.5cm (100-5/2)?

It's a great book, isn't it? To answer your question, you remove the 5cm after you divide it. The book mentions it once at the beginning, so easy to miss! Hope your block works out!

Can the metric measurements be converted to inches easily? Would it be best to convert measurements after the pattern is complete? I can work with metric measures, but i am in the US and most of our measurements are Imperial System.

Hi Barbara, I think the book would still work for you if you're trying out the designs. You can convert the measurements when drafting the blocks too, but with smaller measurements it can become a little bit tricky. There are lots of conversion charts out there if you want to give it a try

Hello, this one is a good one. Once you know the principles, you can draft your own from images/sketches. All books will reflect the fashion of their time, but the methods stay the same.

I have a question: Am currently using this book and i want to know why we divided the measurements for example by 2, 4,12 or even sometimes 16? And also minus or add some measurements like 0.5, 1 or 2 cm? As a student i am supposed to get the blocks off-head so am really frustrated by these measurements. Plz if you can answer me.

It can be a bit frustrating when you start! It gets a lot quicker with practice and once you’ve got your block you’ll find simple styles can take less time to draft than tracing and cutting out a sewing pattern!
