Thanks for the info! Could you do a video on styling/decorating a portico/outdoor entrance? I have a very small entrance into my home, full sun, double half glass half wooden doors and gray concrete flooring. It needs something special. Love this series!! Julie, can you do an episode for orange brick?? I want to stain the exterior orange brick so bad but it would go against the entire neighborhood as they pride themselves on holding on to the original aestic of these mid century modern brick houses. I would like to modernize the siding and the garage with some newer colors, right now the colors are outdated. 😩

There's lots of people out other interested in color complimenting orange brick. I believe it's much harder to modernize siding. Trim yeah!! ( good old black). Thanks

I have the opposite goal. I have a monstrous 22 ft fireplace adamant want to tone it down. Definitely don’t want white, and I think anything cool, or greenish makes the red brick pop even more. Trying to find something warmer that tones down the brick

Hi Julie, thanks for this video. Our house has got red brick with cottage green colour for the downpipes and porch. We currently would like to repaint the roof. Not sure what colour would be best to use on the roof to match with the colour? We like grey/monument but not sure if this will look weird due to the existing green colour? Thank you

Hey Julie. I watched this video when it canned out because will I love your style, you're personality, and all your content. At the time this video did not pertain to me, it does now and it's a rental not my own. I'm going to have to make mood boards I think to get the owners of this house, that was their family home for like 40 years, to possibly let me do some updating. I may be bugging you on a few different videos in upcoming months. Their is a red brick fireplace along with red built INS in a small living area that's kinda open to all the other rooms in the down stairs of the house. Their is also a bigger family area. I know they won't let me paint this brick. I'm praying if I show them pics maybe they'll let me do some kinda treatment (diy German Smear maybe) or at least let me paint the connected built INS a black. I'd love to paint the walls a white. I know you said a cool white, but my decor is all warm leaning. I will have the cognac leather Sven sofa in that room and in the other living area I want an off white sofa. I have black and rattan pieces, and warm medium woods. I was doing kinda Japandi but planning on I'm not sure my style exactly. I Love neutral whites, creams, and blacks. I love vintage looking vessels and brass candle sticks. Kinda leaning a little vintage but not cottage. Wow I wrote a book. Is there a warm white and a certain Black that could work? I was originally wanting to use SW Greek Villa. I keep hearing that's a great neutral white. So sorry I've written a book. Please help!!!

Gray is so neutral, I’d love to see a warm taupe or tan on the walls for a moody vibe. Try off white for a more modern bright look

Very good content. I skipped to the exterior colors because I want to have the perfect color for my red/clay, mixed with black and brown, brick exterior. The brick is topped with Hardie Board triangular shaped sections above the brick, which meet the off black roof. I'm am so nervous because I want a moody dark color which is not the norm for my suburban, Nashville neighborhood. I frequent real estate sites to copy other houses, but it's rare to find a house which meets my *that's it(!) factor*. I would write to you, but being technically challenged, I do not know how to decipher your web address.

I went bold with our exterior paint color- moody dark olive. Nothing in the neighborhood like it. Which is why I know it was the right choice for me 😉 You got this 🙌🏻 Go with your gut!

I'm waiting for your video about colors to pair with granite countertops! It's so hard to match since granite has so many colors in it.

Pick a color you like and it will bring out that color in the granite. It’s not complicated. 😘👍🏼

@@christinalw19 So far, I've been experimenting and found the opposite to be true. When I've got brown cabinets, it mutes the gold and brown tones in the granite (and the blacks and whites stand out). When I have black cabinets, the golds, browns, and whites stand out. Meanwhile, I'm considering blue cabinets (my favorite color) but that might make the granite look wild...

@@Lili-xq9sn My issue is that my design style is very minimalist/Japandi (aka not wild at all, except for my love of blue), but the condo I bought came with granite countertops in the kitchen and all bathrooms. So I have to figure out how to work with what I have.

I would avoid matching them....that would be boring. Greens would look good, think vibrant moss.

That’s up to you and your design intent Mitch. If there’s some contrast, it will help the stone stand out. I love warm whites/ off whites if you’re going neutral. Green is fab as well, check out my video on best exterior paint colors for more inspiration

Hi Julie, I have a floor to ceiling brick fireplace in our living room, with a twist--the grout is dark. In most (all?) of the photos here, it looked like light-colored grout, which looked better w lighter paint. Should I be veering toward darker paint colors, or doesn't it matter?

Either or Rachel. That depends on your design intent- if you go dark on the walls, the tones will read the same in the room. If you opt for lighter walls, the grout would stand out. So that’s your call

Julie still struggling with butcher block countertops I love the look of walnut butcher block but I do have a sink in there S well. Black island butcher block top and off white cabinets. With maybe bottom black as well. With white uppers. Please help.

Off white/ warm taupe would be my vote for walls. Darker than the cabinets so it still stands out Victoria 👍🏻

Love this video. I have a full wall brick fireplace, which I love, but I struggle with the fact that the mortar is black. Everyone keeps telling me to whitewash the brick, but I don’t feel that’s the answer. Your thoughts would be much appreciated!

You can’t paint the grout only, painting the entire elevation would be the answer if you don’t love the black Madelyn. Color as opposed to white can be another solution.

Ok, I'll paint a green feature wall in my living room. I've got gold damask curtains, red brick fireplace, brick wall paper near the fireplace and under the window sill, black sofas, wooden dining table and chairs and a pink coffee table. The two long walls in the living room will be jasmine white

We own a half of a brown brick duplex, on a street of duplexes all with either dark brown or khaki trim. (Each also has white stone accents.) Ours has the dark brown trim, including the front door. I am considering painting the front door a bright color instead, that will make the door stand out and our place look a little unique. I'm considering a red, turquoise, even dark purple. Is this advisable in a neighborhood like this, in your opinion? We aren't selling any time soon.

You can use a scraper/ rough sander or chemically strip it Lina. Ask your local hardware store for the right materials to do so
