@@nmbnmbnmb I apologize for having an opinion....real homes don’t mean boring and unstylish, it’s just how most of us live. Seeing her incorporate her ideas into not only high end homes but regular homes as well would help average homeowners envision their space more easily.

@@JulieKhuu I understand both viewpoints. But, I would also like to point out that you can have luxury décor (lux is how I roll too), but on a smaller scale, so that makes the lux look more attainable. Like I live in a two-bedroom apartment in New York City and I have expensive, traditional taste, so a lot of my décor is fit for a castle or a manor house, but I live in a normal sized apartment- no huge rooms like a castle or manor, but the décor is fit for one! :-D And, PS- nothing is very expensive, it just looks expensive. I'm middle class, not wealthy.
I would LOVE to see more about smaller spaces... I live in a 2 bedroom condo....

This is such great advice. I would add in terms of artwork, a 'focal' gallery wall of original artwork in varying styles, frames and sizes gives a great 'homely' feel. With furniture, I always believe it needs to be curated and updated over time. Not one piece in my lounge matches. I moved into the house with a second hand 1990s habitat sofa with an intention of moving up to a bespoke Heal's & Co velvet 3 seater. Don't spend money on a stop gap piece but keep your intention on the piece you do want. Also, buy furniture/art/accessories with passion. If you love it when you first saw it, chances are you will love it for 10, 20 Infinate years. lastly, play with scale and height. The can often inform the layout.

It doesn't matter how inspired and intentionally I can design my condo living room, it will never look like those spaces. I can make it beautiful and functional and gorgeous by designing it well, but I also need to have realistic expectations because architecture is at least half of what makes those photos beautiful. if I'm not realistic with myself, it doesn't matter how good of a job I do, i'll be unhappy.

All of this sounds great. I just have to figure out where to go shopping. My local places are just boring. And I don't like to purchase furniture online. I like to see the items in person. I am going to just hire a designer. This is overwhelming.

I would love to see several videos : - one on how to deal with glass/acrylic / mirrored furniture - styling in a bedroom that has low to the ground platform bed etc - styling balconies (privacy, furniture, plants, lighting without outlets) - additional lighting (if there is no budget for wiring), How many lamps and plug in sconces can you have and how can they match/contrast in an open concept space)? - work from home-details on switching it up and how to create different seating areas work for you, so you are not forced to be by your desk at all times - how to style small living rooms to incorporate kids toys, kids play areas and stylish furniture. How to source materials safe for little once but yet stylish and light colored

I think she gets really rich clients because anyone I know wants a spacious living room. It's where you have people over and usually spend the most time. But I can imagine that if you have a huge apartment or house you would want to make is cosier.

I have clients with small studio living rooms and the goal is to always make better use of space. Not necessarily lose the functional aspects of sofas and seating simply to make it more spacious.
Love the opinion on having each piece make sense for our current life, not past or future or what just isn't our realistic lifestyle or stuff we don't actually use or like. That to me is the spirit of minimalism. Very intentional and present. Love it. It's good for the soul living that way. Minimalism can look any way, even maximal, if every piece is intentional, useful, loved, and fits our current reality well. The wall sconce trick is a complete game-changer!!😮💡

Julie, how do you find the middle ground between a piece that you love with what is functional? Like you love that RH cloud couch but you have kids. Can there be a middle ground?
@JulieKhuu
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, performance fabrics! Select a fabric that is easy to clean, could have removable cushions to throw in the wash, or one that is optimized with synthetic fibers so you can simply spray and wipe it down. The only reason I don’t have the cloud sofa already has to do with spatial challenges- the scale is totally off for my living room
@merrywalsh2809
3 жыл бұрын
@@JulieKhuu I wanted the cloud sofa for comfort, but IRL I was afraid it would look too rumpled and I didn’t want to deal with constantly fluffing it up, plus I vowed to myself not to eat or use animal products such as leather and down any longer. Many considerations to purchasing a sofa!
I love your comment, about choosing the design that works for you right now, not in the past or in the future. I couldn’t agree more! Over the last several months, I’ve slowly tweaked areas, so that they work for the three of us in the house (two adults and a child) vs us plans entertaining. We generally love have friends over, but with coved, we don’t. So I took the leaf out of the kitchen table and added in some great bar height chairs for us to use (and to keep the balance in the room.) Yes, it makes the flow different. But we aren’t having 15 people in the kitchen area like we were before. We have three people. It’s perfect and cozy and works for us in the now.

Yes, absolutely 👍🏻 Pets/kids/dust/allergies, lots of reasons why many don’t decorate with rugs. You can create patterns and defined spaces with flooring transitions like a mix of tile. I have clients who prefer outdoor rugs indoors made of synthetic materials so it’s easier to hose down. Do what works for you Kanwal!

@@JulieKhuu can you do a video about keeping separate spaces without using rugs
Julie, is it tacky to put a rug over carpet?
@ilahmache7712
3 жыл бұрын
No, a rug over carpet can add character where there may be very little. For example, my apartment has a tiny 12x11 living room with grey carpet. My couch is also Grey. I chose to put a Navy blue and White patterned area rug under my couch and coffee table and it helped to break up the super neutral grey on grey. (I am also an interior designer)
@JulieKhuu

Not at all. As long as your carpet is low pile, a layered area rug can help define space and add another dimension to the room Nik 👍🏻

You make a valid point, but isn’t the primary function of an American living room, especially for couples or singles, watching TV? Most Americans aren’t humming around the house, waiting on someone to enjoy the living room we can’t because we establish it for the purpose of its primary function, which is television. It’d be nice to hear a designer treat the living room how it’s actually treated - as a hub for entertainment. I can’t remember the last time I voluntarily hung out with people in a room that has no entertainment. It’s non-sensical to the average person. Your points are great, but aboveboard for typical people.
@JulieKhuu
3 жыл бұрын
It’s split 50/50. I have clients who wouldn’t dream of putting a TV in the living area. They keep it in the bedroom/ private areas so the living room is used as a gathering space devoid of technology. It’s becoming increasingly popular, especially if you have a family room or loft as a dedicated entertainment hub. But I get you, if you only have one room and you need a TV, the living room would be the place to put it (see my own home for example)
@pm6613

You assume we are all TV addicts. They are the biggest eyesore in a 'living' room where we 'socialize', not mutely sit together. TVs work in their own media area, or somewhere where you isolate, like your bedroom.
