Best Oil Painting App for iPad? | Trying Art Set

UPON FURTHER RESEARCH: I AM USING *ART SET 4*
It didn't take long for me to discover that painting on the iPad didn't get the traditional look or feel without a lot of extra work. I'm super excited to share this new app that I just discovered that is BLOWING MY MIND! Art Set 4 surprised me with super realistic oil painting effects (with a bit of a learning curve) and I'm so excited to show you and keep playing with it myself

Very nice painting 👍. In my opinion, the full version was worth it although it's buggy at times still and needs some more work to refine the app to make things easier to find and do. There are options for gesture and Apple Pencil control in the settings. I really like that in the pallet section if you press on the empty space, your color will be placed and if you tap on any color, it will mix onto your current color. There are many tools also but one that you may use would be the fan to dry the paint. You can slide different colors and tools to all the sides of the canvas you want to use as well. It took me a while to find and figure certain things out that makes the process easier but there but if the developers put a little more work into it, it would be a really great app.

It takes some getting used to, that is for sure! But definitely try it again-in my (limited) experience, it’s the best stylist on the market! But like anything new, it takes practice and you have to find an app/setting that works for you. In procreate I prefer the chalk pencil (calligraphy tab) and one other but I can’t think of the name off hand. I’ll update.

I was looking for a training tool for mixing paints on a pallet for color to then apply to the painting as i can't yet afford the get started kit set up and canvases for starting oil paint. I think if you start with the seven or so basic foundation color to mix with, then the color may harmonize over all in a more natural looking way. I like the Geniva paints concepts, and no toxic smell or chemicals and they dry slow, as I would be rather slow as well. This looks like an interresting start though. Nice video, thanks, don't for get to charge the camera.

awsome drawing! you can go to settings (on the ipad, not in the app itself) and enable some shortcuts from there. like double tab for undue. I like how natural the brushes in artset feel, but the settings are underwhelming and underdeveloped at best (also i encountered some bugs and had to delete and reinstall the app quite a bit over the last couple of months, but maybe thats just me). I bought the app and I really like it for traditional looking art (and i do warm ups before real work with it quite a bit) but I find myself going back to other apps for bigger paintings. Overall I think it is a very fun app but in my opinion, it needs some serious work to really be worth its money. tho its only $10 so it guess its not too bad.

@@katrinacrouch glad i could help you out a bit :D you can also drag and drop more brushes and other control elements (like flow/ opac. controls etc.) onto the UI to make them easier to access. i like artstudio pro best. its almost the same as procreate, only less popular. in my opinion it offers the better gesture controls which helps my work flow quite a bit. also i like the brush enginge a bit better (the wet brushes are amazing at blending themselves). procreate, being way more popular, offers more custom brushes. however i think you can import PS brushes into both. as far as traditional painting apps go, artrage offers a good oil brush, but artset does that too and i feel like artset gets more developer support. artrage just got an "upgrade" to a new app, which you'd have to buy all over again and it doesnt even offer anything new. feels like a cheap money grab, tbh. i know that a lot of artists enjoy the "realistic" app. i just cant get used to it. it always feels weird and again, i think artset does the same job a bit better. in terms of watercolor brushes, im still searching for a good app. i love doing watercolors in traditional artwork and i can never get the same messy results digitally. every always turns out.. less organic. too clean and digital, in a way. but there are a lot of custom brushes for procreate and a bunch of PS brushes around for that and i think a lot of artists can make them work, so thats probably just a me problem. i heard a lot of good things about ibispaint x, as its 100% free (but you get adds occasionally i think) , but i never got around really trying it for myself. i love clipstudio paint, but i just cant support it on the ipad. its a monthly payment on the ipad while its a one-time purchase for win / mac. i hate subscription based apps :') the upside is, you can export ps-files from artset (in the paid version at least) and i guess you could just edit your finished pieces in both artstudio or procreate if you would like to make a print or something. or load them onto your pc/mac program of choice. anyway.. sorry for the awful long answer. im strangely passionate about good painting apps for the ipad :')

@@katrinacrouch New myself, but I would recommend learning how to drag often used tools and colours off to one of the four edges of your screen. That way you can say, with one click paint with an oil brush, one click again to use the palette knife, and one click again to use a blurring brush. It saves SO much time from having to open up the tool palette and find each one every time..... Secondly, use the DRYING tool (looks like a fan). That way when painting in oil you can click that to "dry" your canvas. Then when you apply paint over top it does not blend until you lift off and touch again.

To dry, you use the fan (find the tool on the plus next to the color picker) and you can hit the fan to dry the canvas. Pretty sure there’s other tools for tilting watercolor as well. You can mix colors in the palette as well, there’s a spot to mix colors either in the color wheel or palette. There’s other tools in that + as well, more digital art things. P sure you can layer as well, but if I was gonna do that I’d just use procreate lol I don’t even paint yet and I bought the full version (one time purchase) so when I’m practicing more traditional things, I can use that over procreate

When I originally made the tutorial, it was on the free version. You can definitely do a lot on the free version (assuming it’s still free but I don’t know for sure)

No excuse to not be able to mix and blend colors on a digital canvas in this day and age.

I suppose… I can understand if that’s not the original intention of the app but I’m excited to find one that DOES respond a little more like traditional paints!

I’m sure it encourages more people to purchase, even if it is a turn off for the rest of us.

Unfortunately I don’t think I understand what you are trying to say? If you enjoy painting for fun then you should do it. That’s what I did with this very tutorial ❤️ and most of my other tutorials for that matter. If it wasn’t fun I certainly wouldn’t go through the work, lol

ArtRage Vitae just came out a few moths ago. It's the best to simulate real alla prima style painting without the learning curve of Procreate.
