I Tried Using a CHILDREN'S Art Set - and FAILED..

Ойын-сауық

I mean hey, at least you get A LOT of supplies right....? - Just a shame they don't work!!
This was a trip down memory lane, but not a good one, a trip filled with bumps and problems. I don't suggest you buy these, but maybe you can convince me otherwise?
I hope you had a lovely day here watching me go through Pain and a ridiculously large amount of supplies.
I also hope that the new format of content is enjoyable for you. My apologies that videos are slightly longer.

"Not everyone has a lot of money" - This is a valid point and I'd like to address it. The point of this video was NOT that. As I mentioned at the end, There are MANY alternatives to what is featured in these kits, It may be very possible to get almost the entirety of this set in alternative products of higher (more useful) quality. 42 BAD markers are not equal to 7 Alcohol Markers. Pencils that DON'T WORK, are of no use to anyone. These kits are highly priced, packed full of quantity over quality. My channel is built on CHEAP alternatives, Perhaps one day I'll compile a 'Christmas list' to match the price of this Kit and help you make better decisions. All I want is for EVERYONE to enjoy art and get the best they can within their budgets. If I can advise you on how you can save money I ALWAYS will. I apologize for not including a segment like this in today's video, It would have been the perfect placement.

Agreed!! You can buy cheap supplies that work and are a great starting point, but unfortunately these days, sets like this are made to look good, therefore the money spent making them goes more towards presentation, so basically you are buying the case. The same amount of money could buy great supplies, but won't look as nice

I agree with your point on drawing pencils. Well, most of the time. There are some really horrible pencils out there. But a good pencil doesn't have to be expensive. A lot of people insist on expensive erasers too, and that's not necessary either - in fact, my old teacher told me that the cheap and nasty basic white erasers do just fine. Given most professional grade materials are stupidly expensive, I'd definitely like to see the 'Christmas list' as a follow-up to this video!

There’s nothing like the right equipment. It makes all the difference. I’d rather get my children 10 good colored pencils than 50 crappy ones. It makes an enormous difference in how you are able to actually accomplish an activity and how enjoyable it is. I think your point is spot on.

The problem with the kit is there mostly cheap fillers then pigments in the art supplies. The box is the only thing that's useful, just take out the cheap art supplies, make some adjustments and put in the good ones.

I’ve never used oil paint before but I do know that generally you need some sort of paint thinner like turpentine or linseed oil to thin it out and clean the brush. There is such thing as water soluble oil paints that you don’t need paint thinner for but most oil paints are incompatible with water. I also find it weird to have oil paint in a kids set because even if the patio themselves aren’t toxic the mediums needed to mix them and clean the brushes are toxic.

  • @MaxRide1

    @MaxRide1

    7 ай бұрын

Whilst that used to be true, you can now get non-toxic versions of turps to clean/thin oil paints/brushes - citrus solvent. They even now make water soluble oil paints (it hurts me to type that out.. I mean, really?) but it takes some "googling" to find it and I agree that most people, particularly those buying these kits, probably wouldn't know it or even know to look for it.

Ahaha I use water-miscible oils (Cobra mostly) and you still need a thinner/cleaner to clean build-up off of your brushes, but! it is hell of a good fun to use and much easier than trad.oils XD. I did have to stop using it for a while because even though you can use turps alternatives etc. it still gives off fumes. Oil paint bars/sticks are a great alternative to avoid it all ^^. These sets made me avoid pens, pastels and crayons for years lmao. Trauma flashbacks

And that set was crazy not to include some oil supplies with it. But i love that you were open and wern't afraid to try them!!!!!!! i hope to see you use oils again in the future but i recommend a brand like arteza oil paint or windsor and newton for good oil paint, by the way they do make water mixable oils which you can paint with water if you'd like to try them!!😃😃 loved what you created with the art set btw!!!!!!

Like a few things alter (mostly just the ingraved logo on the case and the design of the water/oil/acrylic paint), but apart of that it is the same product. The only reason I was happy about the thing was because that wooden case is kinda gorgeous. The paints are partly alright. Depends on the colour I think. I got that kit as a gift and I make it work quite well, in some parts even better than some professional supplies I had, the kit is still good if you know how to use supplies properly together and in a way where they best excel at. I personally love using it in my sketchbook and still create good character or illustration pages without any struggles. I'd say obviously not to get that kit if the person in question is not yet that good of an artist or doesn't know how to make cheap supplies work. You don't need professional or insanely expensive high-quality supplies to make good art.

  • @articice3184

I have this kit, the saying a good artist can make any supply into a masterpiece isn't true lmao, the supplies may work for what you do but they're awful supplies. Like they may "look good" but they're not good quality, yeah can make them looks good enough, but that just it. They're good enough, the acrylic paints and watercolour paints work good enough. But when you use even just student grade products there's a clear difference and increase in quality with not much increase in proce lmao. Buying a set like this is fine as long as you're not trying to do anything even just for a beginers art class. There is no reason to use these over student grade supplies, which compared to the price of this would even be generally cheaper. This specific set isn't cheap. The whole price goes towards the wooden box, and that's the only thing it's worth for. The supplies are good for kids. But even some of the supplies included kids shouldnt use. This set is just not worth it unless people want a big box, they're not good supplies and they don't make good art, it's just barely good enough

@@articice3184 I do agree there is better quality supplies, of course but I wasn't talking about the price of this one but quality, my point was just that you don't need insanely high quality supplies to be able to make good art. Could you make something that could be held in a museum? Of course not lol but for art at home the supplies are good enough to be satisfied with if properly used. I personally don't know how much this specific kit cost as it was a gift so I'm basing my opinion off of the supplies inside alone, and anyone can be satisfied with them if they know what they're doing. I'm not saying to buy these over better quality stuff if they're cheaper as that's a no brainer but for many people it will be different depending on their skills and experience so I wouldn't call the supplies a fail or bad or only good for kids etc.

Crappy as the set is, I'm impressed they included oil paints! I definitely encourage you to try them more in the future, as other people in the comments have said already they're supposed to be used with paint thinner/ turpentine rather than water. You can actually do some pretty cool stuff with oil pastels and paint thinner as well though a less waxy pastel would work better. But oils are one of the most forgiving paints you can use, you can fix mistakes pretty easily. (Also, this video is making me want to bust out my Crayola markers just for fun😆)

I have a niece who is an artist, I'll never be able to paint anything like that. I do not understand why her parents do not buy her good quality supplies. I remember the cheap plastic, VHS case-like art sets that easily got crushed, but this one is gorgeous. I wanted to use the colored pencils, but they're the size of your pinkie finger. Oils are absolute madness in my opinion. You need paint thinner, linseed oil is common, and oil paint takes an infinity to dry because oil doesn't evaporate at the same rate as water. You have to walk away from your painting and never touch it. You can scrape off what you don't like and do it over, so that's cool.

I think if someone had given me a set of Prismacolors and a decent set of alcohol markers when I was 12, I might have pursued art more seriously in my teens and 20s--my high school art career mainly consisted of me just drawing stuff to make my friends laugh. About pencils and quality, I personally buy mid-range pencils usually. I prefer a certain hardness of lead because being left-handed means I'll smear all over the paper and my hand if I use a lead that's too soft or crumbly.

Crayons exist because they’re the easiest thing to lay down color, so it’s the first thing kids learn to color with. The wax doesn’t wipe off as easily. Some colored pencils are waxed based, just so ya know. Those aren’t really crayons; they looked like some sort of pastel chalk with some oily substance.

My brother got me a similar art kit as a holiday gift. The pencils were decent as were callligraphy pens & acrylic paints which I used for Gelliprints. I’ve had the kit for a few years & I still haven’t used the oil pastels & the tube watercolors since I prefer pan ones. The case is great for storing sketchbooks though👍

Nicer than any art kit I had as a kid. Mine came in plastic containers and the supplies were even worse. Only got one brush too.

Might be obvious, and the video isn't new but 1) The pencils seem to be like Faber-Catell Polychromos. 2)Coloured pencils work in the way that you slowly build up the vibrid colour by layering and layering and layering some more Tip from one with coloured pencils; yeah, pencils doesn't work like markers. To get a good solid black, build it by taking the darkest of the other colours, blue, green, brown, grey and purple. And just layer, and layer. Again and again. Looks like the markers will be good for colouring Disney colouring sheets. Where it's more or less one colour per area or part of the drawing

I had a cheap platic one when i was little, and loved it! It basically only had textas, pencils crayons and watercolour pallet. But the pencils were pretty good (for a kid) i used to put my clouring book in it (like a briefcase lol) i honestly carried that thing everywhere. I think back then the supplies were better but the cases were cheap... nowadays its the opposite, fancy cases but crap supplies lol

Lol, i received the set in the thumbnail a few years ago at a Christmas party white elephant game. It reignited my love for drawing and here i am, a few years later, drawing every day, doing the best work of my life. Funny thing is, i never really used that kit. I did a few pencil drawings, trying to draw realism but discovered a set of gray alcohol markers at walmart and my life has never been the same... Also, I'm 42 years old Correction, the one i had didnt have the two extra sections

My dad bought a no brand set that looked very similar to these when I was a teenager, but the box had a metal handle instead. It looked really spiffy. I wasn’t really able to use the supplies much due to severe allergies. We ended up giving all the supplies away. Unfortunately, although it might have been due to age, all the plastic shattered when trying to remove items. We cleared it all out and the wood box is nice.

I have the exact same case but in black xD As soon as you started to use the markers & oil pastels I knew you would hate them, they are bad. As are the watercolors & brushes. The colored pencils on the other hand - I figured out that with the right paper (with a rough texture) they are not that bad! I liked the acrylics very much - very creamy texture and I think you need to use paint thinner or turpentine with the oil paints. But I think you did a very good job on the "penguin". Love your videos! :)

The pencils were terrible because you needed to sharpen them first. Colored pencils come with a waxy coating on the lead, and if you try to color through it the color will be super dull. Sharpen it off and try again. Its still likely to be not great cuz they were cheap pencils, but it will definitely be better than what you first experienced. Also, for water based markers, when they are that streaky, try using a water brush with them, it helps even out the streaks, its basically like using a colorless blender with alcohol markers.

I just found out the markets are water activated, they just didn't add that VERY CRUCIAL step in the box. So if you have a box like this, try dipping your markers into water and see the results.

Saw this set in lidls for £29.99. The materials work fine on the paper lidls sell. True they could have supplied a little bottle of linseed oil and turps. on the whole this is a nice set, it gives you a chance to try lots of mediums. i reckon if you bought student grade for all the products it would cost at least 5 time the amount. As a pro artist who are used to expensive quality materials they are always going to notice how inferior kids supplies are.

Seeing kits like this one, no-brand-I've-heard-of art supplies in a fancy wooden case with metal hinges and clasp, I always figured most of the production budget went into the case, to make it look fancy-schmancy and get relatives to buy these kits for their kids. The target market really didn't seem to be actual artists. It's satisfying, in a cynical way, to see that I was right. It looks like 85% of what you're paying for is the case and only 15% is the art supplies. Ick.

I used cheap watercolor pens like those ones. For better results it's better to: 1. Test the colors before and how they mix 2. Don't mix more than 2 colors because the paper will tear 3. Be fast to paint because they dry fast and once dry, you can't continue painting the same area because the new paint overlaps with the old paint 4. Start with the lighter colors and finish with the darkest colors 5. Avoid mixing colors to not damage the paper and they don't mix uniformly, so it's better to use a large color set for each of the different tones

I mean back in the early 2000's these really sucked, my family used to get them for me all the time. The cases were plastic, the pencils broke often and the markers were so dry. The pencil wood splits all the time. The concept of them is great, heck they might have been a building block to me getting into art. There are more expensive ones that are better. The idea is good for someone getting into art
