There are so many BS stories that they and the fans created around his voice. The closest thing to the truth I believe is that he had some kind of nasal thing, deviated septum, and had it corrected. But the doctor fucked up and he had that voice when he woke up, but rather than fix it he thought it was funny and kept it. The doctor said there was nothing wrong if he did keep it as it was.
