Best of Switzerland 🇨🇭 Morteratsch, Bernina (incredible day trip from St Moritz)
Morteratsch, Pontresina, Switzerland: the largest glacier by area in the Bernina Range of the Bündner Alps in Switzerland.
Join us as we go on a day trip from St Moritz to the incredible Morteratsch Glacier. We started the day driving from St Moritz to the car park near some brilliant waterfalls where we did a short walk with Hannah's Nonna and Grandpa.
We then went to Alp-Schaukäserei Morteratsch for a delicious lunch. Here, cheese and curd are made over an open fire. You can watch them being made by hand the traditional way, as well as taste the many varieties produced at the cheese buffet.
After food, we said goodbye to Nonna and Grandpa and hiked to get a view of the glacier. Along the hike there are a number of signs to highlight just how far the glacier has retreated in the past 150 years. We were really fortunate with gloriously blue sunny skies and loved walking alongside the glacial stream.
We got a great view of the glacier in the distance (and some falling rocks) before turning around and heading back to where we came from. When we reached the train station, we bought our tickets back to St Moritz and enjoyed the train journey. By the time we got back, the wind had picked up so we enjoyed a rather blustery walk alongside Lake St Moritz!

Hey Simon! We had such a good time there and the cheese was DELICIOUS! Such a lovely place to spend some time and I still can't believe this was last summer now. One of the most beautiful area's in the country, but also very sad. I photographed the Morteratsch Glacier every year since 2009 and it's melting faster and faster...

@@LozsLeisure No, (I wish :-) ), I live in Belgium, but I have visited the area many times during summer. I always stay in St. Moritz and from there I go hiking in the mountains. Many hotels offer a free pass for bus, train, most cable cars,... when you book a room with them. That way you can quickly move to the starting point nearby. Piz Languard is amazing, but there are many other wonderful walks and hikes in the immediate area. I've been coming here for 15 years now and still haven't seen everything :-)

Bavarian here. The cheeserey looks small - non industrial - almost unprofessional. But I can tell you these small cheeseries, using the milk directly from the cows .. and the cows in the alp .. they make the best cheese. It´s so different in taste! All natural an healthy. I love switzerland and their mountains.
