BEST OF SERIES: BEST PLAYERS DISTANCE IRONS //The gap between player’s and game-improvement irons
Спорт
The player’s distance irons category is for the clubs between the player’s and the game-improvement irons. These irons are known to provide workability, distance and forgiveness.
Today, we test the best of 2023’s irons and look into the clubs that often hover the line featuring more appealing aesthetics than game-improvement but more forgiveness than a classic blade.

Guys it is IMPOSSIBLE to keep everyone happy with the categorization of the irons. Let’s not worry about debating what category they are in. Hope you enjoy. 🙏🏻

Ian, so true. You could just go based off of the manufacturer of each club categorizes them as, that way no one can complain. You'd just be putting them in the category that TaylorMade, Callaway, Srixon, etc. says to put them in. Like Srixon saying their ZX7 Mk II is Players and their ZX5 Mk II is Players Distance on their website. Forget about the lofts, go with whatever they say IMO. Either way, no one can argue with the level of comparison you do and the work you put in. Thanks for that!!

Odd, I wasn't going to debate it but definitely have noticed it seems like the definitions have changed for everyone. A lot of videos now have p790s in the "game improvement" category now. Zx5s used to be the players distance and zx7s were called just players. And so on. I don't think it's a big deal, just interesting that it feels like definitions changed over the last 12 months.

@ianfrasergolf while watching the video it looks like you accidentally hit the previous year model of the Srixon ZX7 irons and not the new Mark 2 version
I have to say, other than in putters, Cobra has to be the most underrated golf OEM. I rarely see any guys playing Cobra stuff, yet their woods and irons compete with the best but for less money. If you buy used, you can get insane deals.

In Australia cobras customer service sucks.. or a lot more people would have their stuff , I’ve tried everything regarding irons and went out on a limb and got the cb/mb this year.. and I’ll never get another set they are unbelievable in every way
Just purchased the Cobra irons and hands down the best feeling irons I’ve ever had and won’t be leaving the bag anytime soon. Great review and backed up my choice, so thank you.
This is the one I've been waiting for! You guys are the best!
I feel you with the P770 Ian! I play them myself, bought them 2022. I came from Cobra Fly-z and wanted to take golf serious, have shot course par 3 times, one round of 70 (-2) and one round this autumn of 69 (-3). I am a natural drawer of the ball, but even for me they can start going more left at times, and in my wildest guess, I'd say it's because of the offset, sometimes they just look like spoons to me and thats generally when I tend to send balls a bit more left. Very nice video, lot's tested! I hope we get more of these "best of end of year recap" videos for other clubs, fairway woods of 3-5-7, hybrids and perhaps even a putter or two! Keep it up!
Lovely vid gents, really enjoyed that, thanks. Also, that was kind of like a trip by Ian back to high school saying hi to all his old flames. Very fun.
When I did an iron fit a couple months ago, the P770 was the one of this group I really struggled with. My CC fitter said that it was quite a bit lighter head and he had seen others have the same issue. Fun test to see.
I got fitted at club champion in Glasgow by Joe this Saturday, Fantastic experience - P770 irons where the best for me averaging 140mph ball speed with a 6 iron about 10mph more than I had with my blades with better launch and spin.
What an awesome video!, love your work guys
I own ZX7 Gen 1's and they are incredible!
Just got fitted and left with the i230 irons. Felt incredible. Love the banter between you guys 😂
In both this and the players CB test, the Cobra product has looked absolutely phenomenal. Really eye opening

Recently got fit and hit cobra's for the first time, phenomenal. I went with srixon but cobra was the suprise contender of the day and wouldn't have been disappointed to game a set.
Great test guys! Always makes me scratch my head wondering why I don’t play a full set of this type of iron. 😁
I LOVE my JPX 923 forged set! 5-GW modus 105 tour stiff.
Absolutely love my i230s!
Good to see Cobra Kings getting some love. So underrated and a lot more forgiving on the wallet.
Thanks for listening to the viewers and putting this up! ❤️
Happy to hear JPX 923 Forged get so good words. Got my set with steelfiber shafts delivered a few weeks ago. Feel they are a massive upgrade from my MP-20 HMB

I’m using the 919 forged with steel fiber. What a setup!!
The banter is strong with these two.
I did some fittings to move from my Apex Edge's (Ben Hogan not Callaway) and the JPX 923 forged were such a game changer in terms of feel + forgiveness on mis-hits. Shots that were losing 15-20 yards with my current irons with an open face and off-centre strike suddenly were retaining almost all of the distance but just being slightly off-line
@M1k3C
7 ай бұрын
@@dronepocket325 A bit of both, the lofts were quite a bit weaker on the older clubs but moreso the lost yardages vs how far it was going on a proper strike. I.e. 170 w/ hogans but then a mis-hit sometimes was only going 150 or so vs 180 w/ jpx and mis-hit were still ~175 The Hogan's I play also have quite a bit of offset which have gotten me into some bad swing patterns of holding off through impact so I don't hook them, and moving to less offset had me pushing most shots as I was trying to get used to releasing properly
Loved the video, was recently fitted in Glasgow with Joe (excellent fitting) and for this category I was paired with the ZX5 and I'm very shallow, always sweep and hit up with my angle of attack...never know how these things work...still need to hit the purchase button at some point. Was only fitted last year for my current Rogue St's

Ian makes golf look so easy, seriously impressive hitting again. If he wasnt such a nice guy, could really dislike him lol. Serious though, great review and top insight. If you ever open a store in the UK Ian, you will do amazing... Hope to see you at Longniddry one day.
Said it on one of the live streams and Ian agreed, Cobra is the most underrated irons of 2023. Rickie plays the tours and a lot of people with low/mid handicap can play them. If I didn't buy in 2022 I would have got the CB's or Tours from Cobra. Great vid boys.

I bought in 2021 and I didn't even try cobra but if I was in the market for clubs again cobra would definitely be on my list to try out.
Good pairing of ZX7 with a higher spin ball like the BXS or Srixon Diamond, especially if you love the V sole but don’t want the knuckle ball.
@josiahjones9521

I have the new ZX7's. Play the diamond too. No complaints.
Good one today fellas. I love how there are so many choices for people to assemble what is right for their game. Who cares what "category". Guys here too hung up on labels of what should be tested with what. If YOU hit 'em in the window you need, then what diff does SGI vs Player whatever make? I LOVE seeing old pics of Westwood winning for years with old Zing2 irons (possibly the ugliest iron ever created - but Westy won for over a decade playing them and I know hes not a SGI iron candidate!!)
This is what I’m looking for at some point next year. I currently play paradym x irons as I only started playing July 2022. But now I am striking the ball consistent, I was thinking T200/T150, P770/P790’s or apex pro but I will go for a custom fit next year. May even go to the title it’s centre at Woburn. Shame it’s not cost effective for me to come to Canada, unless club cost there is significantly cheaper than the UK to offset the cost a touch. Would be a nice holiday
Cobra is the most underrated manufacturer out there in golf currently. Over time my bag has become Cobra from woods to irons. Not quite to wedges yet but could be soon. LTDx LS, Bio Cell+, Fly Z Pro irons.
I bought the srixon over the cobra. For me it was a mistake. They made zx7 bigger. I struggled with turf interaction, they are in my closet. I’m pulling trigger on a new set in spring. Excited to see what comes out on top. t150, 243, hopefully p760 replacement. We shall see
Seems to me like you need a different "category" test to cover: T200, i525, ZX5, Forged Tec, 790, and the like. This is the gap between your "Players Distance" and Game Improvement.

Good show! 👍
I went and got fit about a month ago. Hit pretty much all these clubs. Went in with the idea of getting t150s or zx7s and came away with the jpx forged. They were the best for me. I will say I thought the t150s felt better and softer but jpx was most consistent and they just have the perfect look to my eye. Good stuff lads… think Ian is ideal for this test… the duration he hit some irons in this test was comparable to the length he had them in his bag!!!!!!
That was one impressive display of iron play. Great stuff
i can now see why Rickie plays king tour, awesome spin retention on the miss hits
Playing Kingsbarnes next year. Can't wait to play this hole!
You guys are legends. Keep the banter going.as we say in NZ chur bro Kia Kaha.
Have been saying Srixon needs a ZX9 for years! Absolutely spot on - huge gap between ZX7 and Z-Forged. Would immediately put in bag if they made.
I got fitted at a taylormade event. Thought at a 13 handicap the p790 is what I needed, but I hit the p770 farther and better. And yes they go left, coming from a cutter with my last set.
The srixons and Mizunos likely feel. That being said Ian was striping the ball and was surprised there was so much difference between them. Good review
I got fit a few days ago into the King Forged CB. As a 16hc, I was a little worried. Went back today, hit some more shots and settled on the King Tour. Mizuno Pro 245 felt really good also but I was only getting about 4200rmp out if them with just slightly more carry. Should get my Tours in about 3 weeks.
finally the respect the King Tours deserve.

Mikey is coming into his own here 🎉😂
Watching Ian hit those 6 irons only strengthens the realization that I need golf lessons to improve my strike, I swing my 6 iron @ 85 mph and don't carry it near as well as Ian. lol
@brianrandall5120

The reason he hits it as far as he does is that he’s very shallow (1-2 down) which lowers the spin loft. I’m way too steep myself and wish I had the effortless distance Ian does
I tried out the 923 forged, ended up with the 923 tours for some more workability, but the forged felt super nice when I was hitting them and I’m sure anyone would be happy with them.
Insightful video boys, would it be possible to show the appearance of the clubs from multiple angles before hitting in future videos?
Gents, semantics I guess.... I thought players distance irons were more like TM P790, Titleist T200, Apex, etc. Guess I'm waiting for the next category to see what you think of that segment. Love your content. Keep up the great work!

If you haven't yet, go hit them. I just got fit and, for me at least, the King Tours felt better, had more spin, and carried just as far. I went in wanting T series or Mizuno Pro's, ended up buying the King Tours.
The new Mizuno 243 and 245 are going to be 👌👌👌 in this category
t200 and t350 hybrid set. I'll never go back. I put pride aside because it was doing nothing but hurting my game. Larger heads slowed me down a little bit and now I always hit my irons within 5 yards so I know I'm going to be about 15 foot putt max to the hole.
Great test. Could you also add a 1-10 rating for "feel" of the irons. Clicky vs. soft feel for example. Thanks! Btw, I bag the Srixon MII ZX7,

would like to see this testing on the game improvement irons. But getting an older gentleman with a slow swing speed to test graphite shafts.
You should test the new MacGregor MT86 pro irons (also have an OS option). MacGregor claiming they are back in the game amongts the heavy hitter brands and at an affordable price. The irons doo look stunning, would be interested if they actually compare to similar irons from other big brands..?
Would love to see this same test done on Grass. I would venture to say the results would be similar but different.
I think you could hit a ball bearing with a hockey stick. Super consistent ball striker 🏌️♂️
Hypothetical ZX9 in ZX Forged frame sounds like a P7MC to me :)
I got a chance to hit the King Tour irons and they are excellent. I'm still keeping my Zx7s, though 😂

I wish I would have liked the MP 225 or the 245 but it’s too springy they still felt great but I ended up with the jpx 923 forged it was more consistent in the carry distance
Looks like there is some agreement and/or confusion on what constitutes players distance in the comments. I was thinking the same. I would say you guys are testing the true “Players” distance. What do we call p790, t200, Zx5, Apex, Mp225/HMP. These are more like mid handicap players distance haha
I'm really surprised you didn't have the PXG 0317 T irons in this test. I don't think PXG considered the CB model a 'players distance' model
I hit the 0317 CBs at a demo day and they felt phenomenal. Launch and spin were so tight too, even on slight his-hits. If I hadn’t already bought my Gen3 0311Ps a year ago I’d be putting a mixed set of CBs and STs in my bag.
Is it possible to have a close up of each clubhead when you do these videos please?
I think when you hit JPX 923 next to the hole 5-6 times it’s gotta be much higher up than 4th or 5th! Hit those better than all the rest! 🧐🧐
Can you do a review of some Japanese bespoke irons, Makino, Itobori, CGS Orion

Likewise! Chucked some c-taper 130x in mine and its the first time I've been able to play a golf ball with spin. Has been so much better for my short game to be able to play a spinnier ball that I know will still be stable enough off the tee and through the irons
I can only speak to the t-150's...they feel great and have just the right amount of spin
@ianfrasergolf During the Srixon part it looks like you are hitting the older version of Srixon ZX7 and not the new Mk2 version. Was this accidental or do you guys like the older version better?
Is Wilson D9 forged a players distance iron?
Awesome video guys. I swing my old Cleveland 588 CB-s at around 90 MPH and very rarely get ball speeds around 124/125 - is this a clear sign I need a modern players iron?
@mclovingtjuk8974
7 ай бұрын
Depends, I swing 7i 588MT’s with an 85g regular shaft, ball speed around 125-127, I’m around 90mph club head, depends on Strike and the measured smash number, I’m typically around 1.43. My carry is around 167-170, so older clubs have the distance and speed. I’m currently being fitted as I’m now catching ludicrous jumpers as the very hollow head and old shaft is doing some weird and wonderful as I wouldn’t say my transition is “smooth” Newer clubs will grant a little more forgiveness across the face.
so if you consider irons such as the below to be players distance… i230, 770, t150, then what would P790, t200, be classed under? i have always thought 770 ans 230 to be “ players cavity” meant for lower handicaps
Do the Cobra vs Honma World-TX .. The best player distance irons ever.
In terms of loft and club shape Mizuno needs to create a T150 version of the JPX Tour and Srixon needs to create a JPX Tour version of the ZX7
Is the T-150 a players distance iron? I thought the T-200 was it. I might have to try those. Well done boys!
I think you guys should show what the club looks like before you hit them so we can see what they look like.
The Cobra is legit. Rickie switched to them this year and won his first PGA event in 4 years.
Would lime to see this same test with a higher handicapper. Somewhere around 15
This was how these heads performed for Ian with his specific 120 gram shaft and ball. Would it have turned out the same for someone with a slower swing speed, lighter shaft with different profile and different ball? Or not? Or should only players with Ian’s swing speed play these?
Blades coming next?
CC seems to be switching up clubs in the “Players Distance” category. Most of the time they refer to the TaylorMade P790 and Titleist T200, but in this vid they are using the P770 and T150. These aren’t new models, so what changed?
I have a real question for you guys that is a little confusing. I am seriously not trying to offend any of you. I love your channel. Here is the question…if clubs are meant to be fit to each person’s swing, how is it possible for all of you to take any club and hit them so well? I understand you had the lofts fixed and the modus shaft in each but do you adjust lie angle, grip size and length for each club? Maybe I just need to come up there and see you guys. I hit an i500 in my shaft, lie, length and grip so different than an Apex 21 or a P770. I’d even argue I can’t even hit a Mizuno 225 with any reasonable result vs the others. This is why I am confused. I am a 14 handicap. Is that my issue? I am sure you guys are probably low single handicap. Just trying to make sense of it all.
For a scratch =/- a little bit, Standard Deviation Rules = Cobra or PXG.
Just curious why are miura Cb302 or Pi 401 not included in this category?
Where do the forged tecs fit in?
What is a good spin rate for 7 iron
I notice you never show a bad shot. Nobody that perfect
@canyonaro

They throw out bad shots because this is a club test, not a swing test. You don't want a club to look the worst because Ian rope-hooked a few. Also, Ian is a scratch golfer & incredible ball-striker. I enjoyed it but these tests don't mean much. You have to get fit and see how each club responds to your mishit pattern.
So… a year or two ago these would have been the more forgiving end of ‘player’s irons’ while P790, ZX5, T200 would have been ‘player’s distance’. Are we now saying those irons I mentioned are the premium/less forgiving end of game improvement? I struggle to see a 32* 7i as ‘player’s distance’ when many forged hollow body irons hit 29-30.5*
