Best of San Diego 1985 Part 3
In May 1985 News 8's Hal Clement had a nearly impossible task--to pick the best of San Diego. In a city and county filled with fantastic things, it was a tough assignment. So Hal and photographer/editor Jim Blankinship focused on highlights. They explored the area (or traversed the land), talked to San Diegans along the way, and put this wonderful report together--a three-part series called The Best of San Diego.
Part 1
The first part of the series captures some of the natural beauty of San Diego County including beaches and lakes. Coronado, Windansea, La Jolla Shores, Carlsbad State Beach, Moonlight Beach, Lake Poway, Buena Vista Lagoon, Torrey Pines State Park, and Mt. Helix are all featured. Hal wrapped up part 1 with some of the best places for views of the sunset - the perfect way to end a day in America's Finest City. • Best of San Diego 1985...
Part 2
Next up, Hal featured some of the best man-made or human-enhanced areas of San Diego County - our parks. Of course, Balboa Park was at the top of many locals' lists. Presidio, Kate Sessions, Torrey Pines, Oceanside Harbor and Cabrillo Monument also got high marks from locals and News 8's crew. • Best of San Diego Part...
Part 3
Finishing up the "Best of" series, Hal presented a hodgepodge of San Diego favorites from places to exercise to best freeways to best drives. Some of the familiar spots you'll see include Mission Bay, Boardwalk, Highway 52, Interstate 8, 163, and Highway 79.
Hal summed up this assignment by saying "there's just too much that's good about our county to get it all in - and isn't that nice that the best of San Diego isn't confined to just a couple of spots - the best is all around us."
Truer words have never been spoken.
May 1985
Best places to exercise--Mission Bay, Mission Beach boardwalk, best freeways, best drive.

San Diego was home back then. I was 22 in 1985. I remember watching Hal Clement. So many fun memories cruising all around the County, concerts at San Diego Sports Arena, Tijuana, etc. I finally had to say goodbye to SD in 2005. I visited in 2012 & 2014. So glad I lived there when I did.
I'm looking for myself in this video, I spent all my free time on the PB / MB boardwalk in 1985, it is so GREAT to see this footage, THANK YOU!
Thanks 8 news for bringing back good memories in the past
Lived in Oceanside from 97 to 2000. I miss San Diego so much !!
I miss the 80's!
Ahh to be 15 again . Lol Great stuff Hal Clement . I grew with you on the news.
Brings back many good memories. I miss those days...
I grew up in National City. 1985 is the year I turned 15 and also the summer of 1985 is when I left for New Mexico and never came back to live in National City again. I loved NC, San Diego of the 70s and 80s. Best times to live there in my opinion. It grew up without me and New Mexico is where I truly belong. Had some great times in San Diego
Breakfast at Mr. Ds, mission beach late 70s early 80s! Da best deal! Aloha from westside Oahu! Miss those good old days!
Mission Beach / 4th of July. For every lady it was their super bowl ! They all came out for that day :)
Before they painted a line on the boardwalk to direct foot traffic. I miss walking the boardwalk before the mega crowds.
Yea, 79 is beautiful. A little bit of 94 going to Campo
San Diego is indeed a beautiful - albeit expensive - city.
1:27 this bird is probably still alive today, these things live forever. These things now flock to East County in droves from Sept to spring.

Do that bird know how to talk?
Lol! The rings in the background! I forgot about that! And actual room to walk on the boardwalk too!
I used to go fishing there and boating
OMG when he said Julian !!! Me and my beautiful ex gf and I loved that ride to Julian and we would then drink at this bar. We even were so drunk 1 night we slept in my car till 5am and then drove back to Oceanside. I am from Massachusetts and she was from Minnesota so we loved our rides to Julian

Still better than LA and SF, and most other American big cities for that matter.

Agree. Sadly agree.
I miss San Diego now. If only I moved there in the 80's and was able to actually afford a home 😭
GAWD! People were way better looking back then!
I droved my GTO in 805 freeway
2:32 The old Dean's Photo building. They processed _a lot_ of film there. If those pictures taken of nefarious activities weren't Polaroids, they probably ended up seeing them!
Damn that's some sad music at the end. As if San Diego died or something. 😅

It did die. They didn’t know back in the 80s how bad it would get

2:49 is called Suicide Bridge to the locals.
