    I think the triangular division in his son's face is representing the internalization of the metronome's swing arm in front of him. Of course we can only see the back of this device, but as it's shape is also triangular, as a mirroring of abstract forms it also comes into play for this reason.

    My favorite Matisse piece. The boy is beautiful yet haunting. His comment towards the brutality of WW I.

    Weird that Matisse would put so much grey in a self portrait. I suppose he didn’t think much of himself as an artist then.
