Best OBS Downscale Filter - The Ultimate Resize Comparison

Which is the best OBS downscale filter in terms of performance and video quality? In this video, I compare 9 different methods to downscale a live stream in OBS Studio: Bilinear, Bicubic, Lanczos, Rescale Output, and Canvas Resizing. By looking at gaming benchmarks and an objective assessment of image quality (PSNR) I am able to show that downscaling using the Video Tab and the Lanczos filter is the best choice!

    Um... What happened if the both base and output video got upscaled from 1080 to 1440? Video that i captured, mostly at 1080 and using base and output to 1080 too , but when upload to youtube, its really choppy/badly pixelated Using high bitrates to 40mbps is not helping too, strangely beyond 40 it got more choppier? But strange thing when i upscaled it to 1440, both base and output Got much better? Ofcourse still using 40mbps Still a bit pixelated when in high movement speed but very acceptable Btw you re right about using downscale filter, i tested it out lanzcross vs bicubic, and for 1440 lanczross is the best for me Any experience "what if" you upscaled it, from your experience? Thx in advance

    Thanks heaps for this, it was exactly what I was looking for, demonstrating how to do each method and also PSNR results, there is a recent EposVox video about setting canvas resolution to match streaming resolution (this would be canvas scaling in your vid) but i was very skeptical about it, he does mention that a lower canvas resolution means that OBS doesn’t need to use as much GPU to composite the scene but how much that impacts performance doesn’t reflect in your testing, I’m guessing if a game is absolutely maxing out your GPU then a lower canvas might help but at that point I’m guessing lowering your FPS cap or in-game graphics settings would be a better way to go. Thanks heaps

Big oof

And i will add a (game) Window in windowed mode as a source with same 1600x900 resolution. So theoreticaly there is no down- or canvas scaling. @@TechGuides Thank you for answer but i should specify. I need to run a game in windowed mode with 1600x900. If i will have base res 1920x1080 and add as source window with res 1600x900, this source doesn't fit the screen in preview. And if i manualy resize to screen, doesn't this will look like in canvas rescaling part in this video? I mean you add a source and downscale it to fit the screen and i should upscale to fit the screen. Question is: does manual rescaling in preview affect somehow to perfomance or all what importan is base res, output res and scaling method in settings.

And the Reason might be cause my CPU is the i5 6400 (it is good but it cant hold a heavy game and a high quality stream at the same time). Loved your channel, Keep it going !

    Ryzen is terrible for streaming. Memory-CPU bottleneck makes it so that even when your FPS is high the game still has poor input lag and additional performance losses/studders that do not show up in the streaming report. I hate my Ryzen for streaming. I have tried every single setting.

    @@NovaDoll It's very true. Even with 144fps showing in League of Legends (a 10 year old game) I still get micro stutter regardless of the resolution or x264 preset I choose. The system simply chokes due to the CPU Memory interface bottleneck inherent to Ryzen design (infinity fabric). It is the choke point and achilles heel of these processors. Even running Old Nvenc it still had the same issue but ran slightly better. With New NVENC the issue is completely resolved. Obviously I would prefer to run x264 since that is what I built this machine for, but no matter the settings, it runs too poorly for my tastes. Very disappointing.

    You really need to update this using a AMD Ryzen 3950X as with CPU X264 encoding is the very best quality and performance since there are ton more cores and threads of "ANY" Intel cpu on the market not including server CPUs. For the very best in visual quality x264 is the only way to stream, that is if you have an 8 or more core CPU.

  • @TechGuides

    @@TechGuides I've been streaming with a 2950x @ medium for a while now and I've been wanting to switch to the (new) Nvenc because of the power usage from 16 cores is too much. Most ppl watching streams are watching on mobile devices so 720p60 is really what most streamers should be streaming at. Dumping all that power from a 2950x or 3950x over using the (new) Nvenc makes no sense especially when you compare the quality difference and once its scaled down to 720p and on a 6-7 inch screen it won't matter. So any time someone says "don't use NVENC, it gives significantly worse video quality than x264," I'm gonna smack them on the face and show them your video. Not only NVENC looks better or just as good as x264 in some cases, it is also much better in terms of video stability when live streaming. With x264, if your gameplay is suffering from frame drops, you can expect that your video will be a choppy as a PowerPoint slideshow. Every time your game's FPS drops, x264 cannot handle that situation very well. Your video will stutter very badly to the point it cannot be watched at all. Meanwhile, on NVENC, even if the game is using 99% - 100% of your GPU, it makes almost no difference to your experience at all. I can say this because I streamed on KZread at 18000Kbps using NVENC at native resolution (3440x1440). Not a single frame was dropped from my game. NVENC is made for video games and Nvidia knows what they are doing. Armchair experts (video gamers) can say what they want about NVENC but my experience is that NVENC is as easy as a plug and play USB mouse. x264 gave me tons of headaches and wasted hours of recordings (choppy framerate due to game dropping FPS, even 1-2 frame drop will destroy the x264 encoding).

    "Meanwhile, on NVENC, even if the game is using 99% - 100% of your GPU, it makes almost no difference to your experience at all" That's true... to a point. But there's always that limit when suddenly the GPU can't do any more tasks. The Encoder does not work ENTIRELY independently of the rest of the board. But yes. It's better than CPU encoding in general. A modern intel CPU with Quicksync is actually on par or better than Nvenc in some areas and a bit worse in others due to its adaptive quantization techniques. Which is similar to Nvenc's psycho visual tuning. QSV and NVENC basically nail CPUx264 and AMD VCE right now.

  • @Hzuuuu

    @Hzuuuu

    @@Unethical.Dodgson That's true. I have had some cases where NVENC will stutter when I'm pushing the game's graphics to the limits, such as enabling Super Sampling. Thanks for the heads up about QSV, I haven't tried that one yet.
