BEST NOODLES IN THE WORLD? | Malaysian Kolo Mee in Kuching, Sarawak

Malaysia is home to many unique cuisines, from Chinese dishes to Malay dishes, from Nyonya food to Indian curries. There is so much delicious food to be found throughout this South-East Asian country.
In this video I explore Carpenter Street in Sarawak's capital Kuching. There are numerous restaurants here with yummy meals, but I am looking for the best noodles in the world! These can be found at the Kim Joo Coffeeshop!
This family run noodle restaurant has been operating for more than 60 years. Personally, they serve the best Kolo Mee Noodles in the whole world!
The Kim Joo Coffeeshop is located at 73, Ewe Hai Street (Carpenter Street) in downtown Kuching. They are open every day (except for Mondays) from 06.00 - 14.00.

Kolo Mee the origin is from Kuching, a dry noodle with non-halal minced meat, char siao meat and a bit of boiled vegetables in it, selling at the hawker street side. Best eat it with cut red (big) cilli marinated in dark vinegar. In Kuching several types of choices, such as a signatured 'Red Kolo Mee', the colour red oil is actually the sauce came from the BBQ 'Char Siao meat' and served with a hot bowl of mix vegetable, wanton, meat chunks soup. Kolo means 'Dry Stir' or 'Dry Mix' in local dialect chinese, also know as 'Kan Lao' (Dry Mix)' Noodle. and it's easy to prepare, delicious to eat! and cheap too! (those ol'days only RM 2.50 per bowl). so popular that these dish been copy and re-modify in other countries, they re-name it Mee Kolok (halal version), or Dry Mee (mix with dark soy noodle) mostly can find it in West Malaysia, Dark Vinegar Kolo Mee, Seafood Kolo Mee, Lobster Kolo Mee and much more. Nowadays its listed in the Menu of high-end restaurant and 5 stars hotels, it has become a National Food.

Definitely!! this shop I had when I'm ard 25 yo, I still remember the taste when I back to KL, I'm asking around for the shop name around my friends from East Malaysia, no one know about it when I described the mee with vinegar ( I didn't remember the shop name). I able to walk around the town on business trip two years back when I was age 36, gosh! I find this shop back !!!! I'm so glad that the taste was still the same ! 😭

I went to Kim Joo the very next day after watching your video. The kolo mee is indeed not like the regular ones you find all over town - has a slight sourish tang to it. Love the pork pau and now buying regularly from him. As a Kuching resident, I never realised that Ewe Hai Street is actually the end part of Carpenter Street. I always thought it is one of the side streets leading off from Carpenter. Thanks for the recommendation of Kim Joo - it is old school, unpretentious and quaint! I passed your shop but you were not in then.

One thing is clear: I will come back as soon, as I can, but meanwhile step by step I will see all your videos to learn and to prepare myself even more for the moment I come back! I felt in love with Sarawak and his culture. May be, I will come to live at least for one or two years here. (I am already 67, so plans are more short term driven). All the best for you and your family and again thks for your videos and for which is yet to come !

What is your fav pasta? Mine is spaghettini bolognese, used to make it every now n then, now I can't remember when was d last time I cooked it. While I was in KL, I used to cook spaghetti bolognese for Raya, I even made some for office gatherings. I also add to d buffet, sardines spaghetti for my farewell, posting to Mumbai n also did d same for two colleagues who were on official visit to Mumbai. Now, I made myself hungry, hehehe, haven't eaten since I woke up in d morning, for more than 21 years now, it's felt like I have performed fasting in ramadan, eating once a day in d evening. 🙂

mmm kolo mee was my favorite! Mouth watering just watching the video! I also had coffee at the Black Bean coffee a few times! Around that area I went to the Indah cafe many times and took their cooking class. However I must admit that as I am a pretty bad cook I haven't been able to redo any of the delicious recipes. I was surprised the other day when I went to eat at the Gaia here in Burgos, Spain. The owners are a couple who travelled extensively before the pandemic in Asia. I asked if they had been to Kuching. She told me sure thing and even had a tatoo done. Finally they even had laksa on the menu that day!

Hi! Many restaurants are open for breakfast and lunch only, so they open around 6 am and close around 2pm. Most people will go to a coffeeshop in the morning for a cup of coffee or breakfast, before going to work. Other restaurants are only open for dinner. Normal office hours are the same in other parts of the world, from 9-5.
