We did a lot of research when we purchased our Mototote rack because we knew that it would be bouncing around on all sorts of roads toting our beloved TW200 on van adventures. After much deliberation, we found that the Mototote was the the best option (although more expensive) for a rack that would take the abuse and last.
The Mototote MTX Sport was the model for us since the TW200 has such a wide rear tire. The MTX m3 may be the better option for you (and cheaper) depending on your motorcycle.
Here is a blog that we wrote about the rack.

    I'm assuming you close down the ratcheting mechanism completely. Looks good though. I use soft straps around the lower triples but it's a full size enduro bike. These things still sketch me out even though I'd only be putting 250 lbs max bike and on a 2nd generation Tundra. :) TW is a very cool bike !

    Hey guys, didn’t know ya had a YT! We met real quick in Ketchum in June at Frenchmen’s with the Kooks, think you were heading off to go fishing? Anyway neat vid, good job. The straps with the clip are great for staying secure but consider a fork brace or fork saver, you can make one out of a chunk of wood but it goes between the fender and front of the machine to prevent your forks from fully compressing and prolonging life of your seals. You also might consider running just a single rear strap right over the back tire. That’ll allow the rear suspension to move and less stress on the hauler. Aside from that ya nailed it, safe secure convenient hauling system. We just made a hauler vid cause we entertain so many questions related to our set up - check it if interested. Our back table is the jam! The rest of our vids are super moto centric but there’s a whole Idaho series you might dig. I’ll smash that sub button and sniff around at more of your vids!

    To add to crazyivans comment, there is also a possibility of the bike coming undone, if the suspension flexes enough to loosen a hook. What you need are loops made for carrying a bike. The go between the fender and fork slider, or lower. That makes it a very solid connection, rather than one that can flex. You have been fortunate if nothing has happened so far.

  • @DrifterJourney

    @DrifterJourney

    10 ай бұрын

    Thanks for watching and also sharing. We put it on pretty tight so there probably isn't a lot of flex left available to let it get loose. We put over 50k miles on it over all kinds of roads and luckily haven't had an issue. With that said, it sounds like there is a better way.

  • @NutsNBolts24

    I don't have this brand but I carry my DR650 on a similar carrier. Downside is eventually having my bike strapped down tight in the front blew my fork seals. Now I have a plastic T that won't let the forks fully compress, best $16 I've spent for hauling my bike.

  • @DrifterJourney

    @DrifterJourney

    2 ай бұрын

    Thanks for watching and also sharing. Many people had mentioned that over the years but luckily we never had a problem with ours. Maybe it's a TW thing. We had that bike on back down any kind of road for years and about 30,000 miles. It held up pretty good for the beating it took. I'll definitely look into one if we start hauling a lot again.

  • @dominodoggy1

    I have read that it's better to attach the tie downs to the triple tree instead of the handlebars to help prevent messing up the fork seals. I guess attaching higher up puts more of a sideways stress on the fork tubes than attaching at the triple tree. YMMV as always but when I get my carrier that's how I intend to tie down.

    I have a Rak Attach and a OneUp rack for carrying bicycles. They are very well made. However, the weight limit on the Rak Attach, from their website, is rated at 275lbs. I think you are at or over their rated weight limit if you include the weight of the carrier. I'd never carry a motorcycle heavier than what you are carrying with the Rak Attach. I might carry something lighter - and still feel semi-comfortable. I have a truck camper where I need rear access. But I'll end up getting to camp, remove my 350 lb KTM, and then just remove the motorcycle carrier from my hitch receiver. Creates extra work but it's safer imo.

  • @DrifterJourney

    @DrifterJourney

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching! We definitely wouldn't carry anything heavier than our bike on it and we have been testing its limitations for sure. We've always figured the weight rating would be for it in its weakest position (open). I either unload the bike for extended stays or lift up on the front as I swing it if I need something quick. We've put about 40,000 miles on it on all sorts of roads and haven't personally had any issues yet. With everything though.......we always recommend people to use at their own risk. They recently came out with version 2.0 which looks stronger (same weight rating) and I've also heard of folks taking it to a fab shop to strengthen it up.

    Hi Gary. Thank you for the comment. The NRS cargo bin on the back of the bike can only fit one helmet. We ride the 200 with both of us and it works most of the time. It's great for getting around town and up forest roads. It's not really quick by any means so highway speeds aren't realistic. Sometimes it's a dog on the hills too but it hasn't really kept us back from too much.

    Greg, what hitch do you have on your Promaster? I have a PM 1500 HR also and would like to use a hitch hauler as well. I'd like to haul a Suzuki VStrom 650 that weighs about 435 but am willing to get a lighter bike like a TW200 or XT250 or similar if the VStrom is too heavy. Have you had any issues using yours? How many miles have you towed your TW200 on the hitch hauler? Does it bounce/flex much when you hit dips, bumps, etc?

Without the swing arm, which is a separate product that we bought from RakAttach; 250 lb weight limit) it's very solid and the only rocking is the bike itself. However, with the swing arm, there is more bouncing when we go over bumps and dips. But we haven't lost the bike yet and we've driven many thousands of miles with it, including up to Alaska and back.

    will this work on the Promaster without the rakattach swing arm since the hitch is flush to the bumper? I plan on buying the same setup as you but the rakattach moto version has been on back order for over a year.

    Yes, we had the mototote rack for a few months before adding the RakAttach and it works just fine. The motote has several holes where you can set how deep it goes into the hitch depending on how wide your handlebars are on your motorcycle. The only issue without the RakAttach is that we couldn't open the back doors all the way because some parts of the motote rack interfere at the bottom of the door. But otherwise it works great without the RakAttach.

    Hey man, I know people have asked about heavier bikes and that is all within the rated capacities, but I am curious to how you feel the handling would be if your bike weighed in around 400lbs instead? Assuming the rakattach could handle it, and you were able to slightly modify the setup, do you think that sort of weight would be too detrimental to the handling of the van/stress on the structure of the van?

  • @DrifterJourney

    @DrifterJourney

    3 жыл бұрын

    All specs aside with the rack and swing out.......I would guess that it could handle it based off a towing capacity of 5,000. Double check but I think tongue weight is 10% of towing capacity normally so 500 lbs would be what they are basing it off. As for traction, we do notice that we lose a little with the bike on back (I guess it could be lifting the front up a little? ) but it hasn't been a problem for our use. Hope that helps. Obviously we're not professionals and this is just our opinion. Be sure to do any research needed for safety.

Once you figure out what works for you, it should get easier. Make sure to use our link and discount code if you snag one to get yourself a deal.

    Is there a swing arm that supports more than 275lbs. Be careful with your set up your bike alone weighs 278 lbs. Not including the bike hitch.

    Thanks for watching! I have not found one that supports more weight (unfortunately). I know the stated limits and definitely know it's pushing it but my guess is that the rating is in its weakest position (open) and that it handles more than they say. I always tell folks to do their own research before trying products. With that said, we personally have not had any issues with the setup after several years of all types of roads and many miles driven.

    Thanks for the suggestion, it's held up pretty good so far! Maybe an issue with other bikes but the TW200 has been solid

    Thanks for the feedback. This is one of our older videos.......We've been dialing it down a lot and have been thinking about re-shooting this one. It's just got so many views that I don't know if a new one would surpass it. Hopefully you found the discount if you're going to purchase one.

    Hi there, informative video, however the music on this was brutal and ruined it for me, I had to stop watching. Take the music out, and it would have been fine, I do appreciate the info.

    Thanks for watching and we agree. This was one of our earlier videos before we figured out the sound situation (always a work in progress). Unfortunately the algorithm liked this video so we left it as is so that we could make sure as many people found out about the awesome discount as possible. Our video for the new version of the rack should be much better but it never took off.

    Why do men under 40 years old talk like a little girl raising their voice at the end of every sentence like you're asking a question when you're actually making a statement. It's bad enough when adult women do it but when a man does it I just can't listen anything he's got to say.

    Thanks for watching. Be sure to continue watching all of our videos to see my progress. Maybe I'll be a better person for you in the future. Hope you like the discount if you buy a rack. P.S. Does talking down to people on the internet make you feel like a better person? Have a great day.
