Best Lavalier, Tie, Lapel, or Clip-on Mic for RØDE Wireless GO
EPISODE 16
The RØDE Wireless GO is a great compact wireless mic for close-range wireless applications. It features a built in microphone on the transmitter for quick and easy clip-on use. It also features a 3.5mm mic input for connecting external lavalier microphones.
DPA is a high-end microphone brand whose mics are used in Broadway theatrical productions, on major motion films, and on TV shows like Game of Thrones (HBO) and Shameless (Showtime).
We explain which DPA lavalier microphone, concealer, and parts you need to order to make it work, and then we compare the built-in mic on the RØDE Wireless GO, the DPA 4063 lavalier mic, a Shure MVL lavalier, and also a RØDE smartLav+-similar to the RØDE Lavalier GO.

    Thanks. Our prediction is that the sound won’t be as different when plugged into different wireless transceiver systems. There may be some differences, but not as dramatic as when switching mics. With digital wireless systems, it’s converted from analog to digital and then back to analog, so the only place to introduce coloration is in the A/D/A conversion. The differences might be in the amount of noise, which might be worth testing....

    D was my preference too but price was far to much to pay for the difference. Most of the difference in the mics could be closed by 30 seconds on DaVinci. Not sure why the noise floor was so high in the test across all the microphones. Thanks for the video nice end observation on the hair stiles, you should all be thankful that you at least have some to compare :).

    Thanks. We haven’t. They appear to use different frequency spectrums, but the range spec of the Sennheiser seems much shorter than the RODE. Since they’re both digital, we wouldn’t expect a huge difference in sound quality. But you should try it for yourself to confirm.

It doesn’t have to be a Pyle, but they are inexpensive (under $20). Here’s a video on the Pyle mic: kzread.info/dash/bejne/iZ1p1bl9h7fAnLw.html

    Awesome Review!! Exactly what I was looking for but not exactly due the content of the video...I picked up a cheap knockoff version of the Wireless Go called Pixel Voical Air to go into the Rodecaster Pro. However, I am having all kinds of issues trying to get clean audio out of the system. My question is, how did you connect the Go to the RCP? TRS to XLR is what I tried with the Pixel but I have to pull the jack out a little just to get sound. Just horrible sounding. I can use the Phone input on the back of the RCP but still get crazy amount of buzz and noise and no processing. As of now, I have to come out of the Rx with an TRS 3.5 to TS 1/4 into a Pyle PDC21 (Direct Box) then XLR to XLR from the Pyle to the RCP. Works but to convoluted... I am definitely returning the Pixel and already ordered the Go along with the SmartLav+ and SC3 based on this video! Thanks!

  • @TheThreeTechs

    @TheThreeTechs

    4 жыл бұрын

    It’s tricky. The TRS output from the Wireless Go output the same signal on the ring and sleeve. But when you wire that to an XLR balanced mic input, it reverses polarity on one of the signals and combines them to eliminate noise-how balanced mic wiring works. But combing the same signal with one of them 180° out of phase results in zero signal, which is what you saw when plugged in all the way. That’s why you had to pull out a little so that it only made contact with the tip and not the ring. But that’s not ideal and can cause grounding issues. You could use a direct box or other summing device to combine the dual mono signal into a balanced mono XLR signal. Or just disconnect the ring so that you only get a signal coming in on the tip. You might need to make a custom cable. A TS plug won’t work on the Wireless Go. It will kill the signal.

    @@TheThreeTechs How have you connected the Wireless Go receiver to the Rodrcaster Pro in your video please? Are you using a Rode VXLR adapter? If so the wiring of that adapter is 'interesting'. The tip of the TRS goes to pin 2, the ring ALSO goes to pin 2 and the sleeve goes to pin 1 AND pin 3. I suspect that depending how some microphones are wired, that the tip and ring being shorted may cause problems.

    That's a bit crazy why don't they just streamline that and add the correct mic connector to the Rode list on there site, as an option for the GO instead of having to choose another brand to get the correct connector. As far as Sound quality I did notice some noise in all of them but I was thinking that was just BG noise from the testing location overall I like B I thought A and C did not sound as good as B and D but if price and SQ is important then the Rode is the one to get as it keeps it a great sounding low cost Kit at the same time. I wrote my answer before the reveal then after chose the Rode for a low cost kit that sounds quite good. DPA is to costly in my opin to pair with the GO unless you just have them already. So if low cost is the goal while maintaining good sound then I think the Rode lav works well.

    Thanks for this comparison! I was exactly looking for a test like that. I would like to know, which one of these 4 would fail for singing ( max. SPL ~104dB). I am a vocalcoach doing online classes and looking for a lavalier for my wireless go, which won’t distort, when I suddenly sing very loud (pop tenor voice). I was already thinking about dpa, but wasn’t quite sure which one to pick, because the 4061 e.g. is especially tuned for loud recordings. But it also has about 19dB less dynamic range. Do you have any recommendations? Thx!!!

  • @TheThreeTechs

    @TheThreeTechs

    4 жыл бұрын

    Glad you found it helpful! I think the limiting factor here will be the Wireless GO pre-amplifier, which has a dynamic range of 100dBA. If you like the sound of the DPA, you’ll need to get the 4063 to match the voltage of the Wireless GO mic input. The others won’t work well because Wireless GO only supplies 3V power to the mic. The 4063 already has a high SPL of 138 dB, which should be more than enough for your application. There are no gain controls for the transmitter, so you can only adjust the placement distance from your mouth. If you’re overloading, you can try moving it further away-like clipping it lower on your shirt / chest. Also double check the receiver output level and your recording device / camera input levels to ensure that you’re not distorting somewhere else in the audio chain. The receiver does have three levels of output levels that you can adjust if it’s overloading your recording device / camera input.

    ÖMER BASS for that application I’d use a wired Mike into a zoom f6 recorder, the f6 is brilliant as it won’t clip the audio, but doesn’t compress the range like digital limiters would. I don’t know if that helps you, but the f6 is certainly worth considering.

    Thanks for the comment. Agree that typically as you spend more money, you get diminishing returns. The extra quality may not be work it for most people. The RØDE Wireless GO did drop out a couple times during our recording while only being a few feet away, so pros will probably choose a more robust system with a diversity receiver to minimize dropouts. Still RØDE Wireless GO is convenient for world travel since it uses unlicensed 2.4GHz spectrum.

    @@TheThreeTechs The RØDELink has a better connection (just tested both) and you use batteries instead of waiting to charge the the Wireless Go - But the Wireless Go are so small - very nice solution. The higher price for the DPA may be caused not only by the raw sound but by the ability to EQ it - It would be really interesting to see you editing the raw recordings to get them nice and clean with a smooth, not too basey and not too "telephone mids" like sound - that's not so easy with some Lavs as some are lacking some frequencies or distort them Oh and of course the DPA can be hidden with make-up i think and should not have problems with sweat and water, the cable should offer more isolation against rumble when touched/moved and against cellular interferences ... and it should be more robust - which is another cause for the higher price
