Reviewing my incredible Cal Leather "LAPD" CHP Vintage Leather Jacket
Vintage enthusiasts hold Cal Leather in high esteem. I jumped at the chance to get one that an acquaintance was letting go.
This vintage leather jacket is in the California Highway Patrol style. I review it based on materials, construction, features, sizing & fit, wearbility, styling, and value.
Cal Leather is still making custom leather motorcycle jackets today.

    Hey Duds, woow, what an awesome edgy beautiful leather jacket in the biker style! I love the creaky sound! You are looking so absolutely great in that jacket combined with the white shirt and the jeans. I have also heard from Cal leathers before, and completely agree to everything you mentioned about these smaller leather jacket makers. Although I don't have a Cal rider jacket I am nevertheless a very proud owner of a legit padded pocket "Columbia" custom made leather jacket from Langlitz. They are too a smaller maker and unbelievably dedicated to satisfy your demands as a customer. I have never ever before experienced better customer service! And - I was then, when I ordered my jacket, about 10000 miles away from that place in Portland, Oregon, where Langlitz Leathers is located. Long e-mail contacts, and Scott from Langlitz was patient and in every respect very friendly and helpful to discuss every aspect of my dream leather jacket. And - after three to four months later, when it arrived at my place, I, o my God, was in heaven when unboxing this shining leather miracle of a craftmanship of the highest possible caliber. They print your name in it, and it has this rare label of 70 years jubilee of Langlitz! - Yeah, so I can fullheartedly share your joy and enthusiasm for the equally cool and iconic Cal leather jacket! Thank you so much for this wonderful review, which I enjoyed watching! Keep on rocking your leathers! Peace and kindest regards from Switzerland.

    I’ve owned two cals. One was perfection from 50s and it had a super rare grey muton collar in a rare cut. Unfortunately had to sell it. Was so incredible. Cals in good to decent condition are gems.

    Wish I could share photos on KZread! But a few things. First of all It was a straight zip. No belt, no coin pocket, no d pocket. Just two hand Warmer pockets on each side.short cut in the waist. A bit long in the sleeves. No sleeve zips. Shiny probably 3oz horsehide. Black. Grey mouton collar. So just not a typical cal at all. People think cross zip or various police styles when they think cal. This must have been either a custom or a line not many have survived til today.

    @dangniewecki6248 I've got a 50s made one with the straight zip/zip hand warmers/snap map pocket.......the collar snaps are a different set up to the cross zip versions........but no badge patch nor belt loops either , so I'm guessing it might have been for plain-clothes police or a retired motorcycle club member

    Still waiting on it, they had said it would have a lead time of a couple of months. On a side note, I just bought a vintage 70's cafe racer jacket from them. I also have leather moto pants from them. The quality is there! If anyone is interested, there's a shop in SoCal called Maund Speed that has Cal Leather NOS/Deadstock leather pants for about 250.00.

    Back in the hardtail days, some people wore kidney belts. I wonder if the stiff belt was meant to partially serve that purpose?

  • @DudsByDel

    Definitely the stiff panel on the back is yes. Look at Bates jackets, that panel is even larger and stiffer, intended for protection all through that area

    That's a very kool, bad ass jacket for sure!, I plan to get one of those one day, I believe vanson makes a version of it, also do you know anything about five star leather?, they seem to make a lot of reproductions of vintage leather jackets, thanks again

  • @DudsByDel

    @DudsByDel

    5 ай бұрын

    Thanks Michael! Yes many makers do a CHP style. Vanson Chopper and Colorado I think fall within the category. I think Cal makes incredible ones though. As for Five Star, I think you can draw a direct line from FedoraLounge to their vintage repros. There’s a big thread in the outerwear section of folks trying different designs out. I’d say they tend to be alright but ultimately underwhelming. However the price is tempting for some

    I like the boxy fit a lot. Can you review the leather jacket and fit as worn by Tori in the last season of Saved by the Bell? • @DudsByDel

    @DudsByDel

    4 ай бұрын

    Hmm. The brown Schott perfecto I got falls into this category. I ended up finding the lack of an action back with the very trim fit too constricting. At first I thought it was ok but time told a different story. In reference two Aero jackets that didn’t work for me in my Aero Highwayman review. The premier highwayman was too slim- it was a chore to wear and move in. The 1950s halfbelt was both kind of hanging on my neck, which I could readjust a bit, and also made of just super thick horsehide. The tankiest I’ve had personally. Ended up just not being comfortable

  • @igniaulfsborg8946

    @igniaulfsborg8946

    4 ай бұрын

    @@DudsByDel thanks for that. I’ve read similar complaints about the phwm but never the 50’s hb. Idk about you but the first assumption I make when looking at a jacket is that someone has tested the pattern for comfort. I can’t imagine anyone in the 50’s abiding a leather jacket that couldn’t be worn all day so it’s a constant surprise to read about how many of Aero’s period reconstructions are uncomfortable

    That's a sweet looking piece. However, and I'm about to sound like a peasant, but I can't stand a jacket that squeaks that much, too many douchebags out there with pleather jackets for a real piece like Cal to not be confused with pleather too, people would have to be able to smell the leather from where they are standing, before they even think about calling it pleather. It might be all the PTSD from people calling my Hemi a V6 just because I debadged it, it has happened way too many times for it to not bother me lol

  • @DudsByDel

    @DudsByDel

    4 ай бұрын

    Hahah I feel your pain. Some jackets just make more noise, often due to the top coat. It can also happen if folks put too much conditioner or other product on the leather and it forms a residue. That being said, often a cleaning and proper conditioning will actually reduce the noise if it bothers you
