Best Kayak Setup for Trolling

Ойын-сауық

In this video I go through my equipment setup for trolling in a kayak. I discuss the important controls that affect your trolled lures and my thoughts. I go over the mounts I use on the kayak for rod holders, fish finder, and misc equipment. I touch on the safety equipment I’m never without. I go over the electronics I find most useful when I’m trolling for fish. I have a set of tools I’m never without when I’m out fishing that never leave me wanting more. I hope this helps and enjoy!

    I dont see many ppl with the rubber bands on plugs but all my plugs have them. Theyre easier to store & dont stick to each other as easy. Good stuff

    Great vid. Wind is suppose to be down tomorrow. It's been a while. Maybe RB with a 1/2 dozen trolling lures , a couple bucktails & a weighted treble for some snag & drop. I also have some trolling weights if I need to get down a little more. You ever use those heavy parachute type bucktails fpr trolling down deep?

    Best of luck tomorrow. I have used tandem parachute rigs. If i’m trying to get down to 30 feet or more that’s my top choice.

    @@MDYakFishing Yup, I have done that from the boat. I'm talking about the heavy bucktail jig style single lure. I purchased a couple a couple of years ago & haven't used or been out in a while do to an injury. Probably save them for the next time out or for when they start to move out deeper. Thanks for getting back.

    Thanks for the great tips. New sub. One question I have is if the fish are at 25ft down and I’m using a jerk bait, how much line should I let out? Also, same question for soft plastics. Thank you in advance. 👍

    Thanks for watching. They have trolling calculators you can use to figure out how much line you need to let out as well as how much extra trolling weight you may need.

    My daughter recently moved out there and I will be visiting her in the spring. Can you recommend any good fishing Kayak rental places in the Annapolis area. Alot of them appear to have the non fishing kayaks. They dont carry the Hobie, Jackson... fishing sit-upon kayaks with the nicer seats.

    That is key. Most likely in order to get a Hobie fishing kayak as part of a fishing experience you'll need to hire a kayak fishing guide.

    For your steering drum connection to the torqeedo, why didn't you connected it directly to the screws vs. running it through the front holes and back down to the screws?

  • @MDYakFishing

    @MDYakFishing

    Good question. The screws are small and a direct connection would have put all the force parallel to the drum. The method I used normalizes the force relative to the drum reducing the lateral force on the screw and thus reduces the chance the plastic screw hole will break or give.

    @@dmnguye69 No problem. I wish I had a picture. The cord wraps around the drum about a 1/4 of the way now, further distributing the force.

    @@MDYakFishing I have a NK180-S motor, pretty much identical to the torqeedo, but you bring your own battery flavor. I'll take apart my steering drum to see how I can run the wires through.
