COMPLETE TROLLING MOTOR BUILD - Oldtown Topwater 120 PDL!

Ойын-сауық

Hey everyone! Thank you for watching my video, on the next one Im planning on swapping out the mini Kota head for a PWM controller box. First off this build did not require a lot of money but it did require a lot of brain time. I tried to include everything you’d need and each step to make everything seen by you guys, the viewers. My kayak is an old town topwater 120 PDL and the idea to install my version of an MK motor system was through the interweb. I hope this build interests you and you give it a try yourself.
The ONE thing I believe I did not capture on video was putting the motor lock above my “cutting board” and a hose clamp on the bottom half, and 1” chair leg cap for the top of my motor shaft.
If you have any questions comments or concerns please leave them down in the comment section and ill reply to everyone. I appreciate you all. Thank you for 1,400. Teacher by day and fisherman by-any-time-im-not-doing-the-honey-do's or hanging with my wife and dogs and my beautiful daughter. I try my best to make my videos weekly but sometimes life gets too busy! I hope you enjoy, I sub back and love reading comments/suggestions. Have a great day!

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. kzread.infoUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

That's awesome 👌 but I think the only flaw would be running into stumps or anything hard underwater because it doesn't have a breakaway system but other than that I'm literally going to follow this idea!!

Stumbled across your video looking for a transom motor mount option. I have a mounted kayak dolley on the stern, and the cutting board idea is where I’m gonna start, trying to avoid the interference of the dolley and function and use the mounting screws from the dolley, this cutting board as a mount might be the solution! Loved the video and thanks for the inspiration!

Hey bro, great job. This is why I love today's kayaks. They are a one man boat. And you couldn't give me a boat. I purchased my 2021' Blue Lagoon, Hoodoo Tempest 120 Pdl. Once I saw, they design a short shaft, 46lb lb thrust trolling motor, that mounts exactly where my pdl mounts, and the reviews, I knew I would love it. So I have a 120 pdl X34" wide, with the motor in cuts through the water, average 4 to 5 mph. I'm 5ft 7 151, so she moves. Had a great 1st season, and this winter have many more additions going on. Waiting on my bixpy j2, that'll mount to my toe control drop down rudder. But obviously I'll run one for long runs, the other to troll around, and paddle around my spots., and I always learned it's 🖍 CRAYON. One word..lol. Be safe bro..

Wanted to add, I started with a led acid for my 46 lb thrust trolling motor, that us mounted directly in that spot. And my battery sits, behind my seat, and my 12V cabela's battery, and power box I DIY'D for my electronics, us in my bow hatch. I'm 5ft 7 151 lbs, worked great. Now I have 2 50 Amp lithium from amped Outdoors, and last all day, sometimes 10 plus hrs, if it's a hot day, I'm on my katak all day. But hope by now you gave all of that a nice coat of black spray paint. That would make it look sweeter..

Hey dude I like your DIY trolling motor build the only difference I would’ve done on your front support pipe is put end caps on each side so the water wouldn’t get in there when you’re in rough waters so that the wires don’t get wet. Outstanding build.

Nice build! Only thing I disagree agree with is keeping the controller head. I would have ditched it since you’re not using it to steer. You’re only using it to switch gears so you could take the switch out of the head assembly and mount it next to you or frankly anywhere to save a ton of room.

Cray On. Next time tape the foil to the cardboard so it doesn't move on you when tracing. Try using a jigsaw to cut the cutting board. To smooth the edges, use a heat gun or flame after sanding. Nice idea for trolling motor mount.

great work...lol i had to do a similar thing for my 106 mk. the control board has now burn out twice. so i made a back up. but mine can swivel (i can turn it around) and i can turn a handle that screws inwards to keep it straight. for my kayak. the motor hole is farther forward, so i only shortened the shaft and left the head on. it works great, but the cheap 45pounds thrust i bought is slower than the minn kota. 2 kph slower. i will probably install a pwm speed controler next, to be able to use my original minn kota motor. my advice if you do that too, use a powerful one with a bigger capacity because the usual ones , i hear, do burn out eventually. and i plan on installing the board where the original board is. under the aluminium plate(not in a plastic box). take care guys...lol

Dude awesome build. New subscriber. Last year I took the head unit off my trolling motor and put it next to my seat, works great. I am on a SS127 Bonafide, but just got a Sportsman 120 PDL. I want the best of both worlds, pedal and also power. I am now going to take the 5 forward 3 reverse switch in the trolling motor head unit and put that into a small waterproof electrical box. Looking at your build, I am going to copy it (thanks) and mount the new box with switch in it on top of pvc where you have the head unit. Again awesome build.

You just stole over a thousand dollar from old town by showing us how to make this motor. Great job! I’ve always wonder if this was possible. Now it’s time for me to build one. Thanks again

Simple suggestion on cutting shaft. Take a smaller diameter pvc tube, slip it over the wires and into the shaft. Use it as a safety barrier between shaft and wires while cutting the shaft. This will prevent possible damage to wires.

You might try marking the foil with a pointed Sharpie marker while it's still in the 'yak where the foil meets the side and bottom of the well; that way, when you pull it out you have an accurate tracing of the bottom of the depression to make your template.

Cool mod, although now you can’t raise and lower your motor easily to go into shallower water but its nice to have your control right there between your legs.

Yea I typically fish some very deep water so I never really have to worry about lifting and lowering but I will admit it’s tedious to have to pull all the way out before docking it on the shore. Appreciate you!

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I've been surf fishing for about 2yrs now and am thinking about getting a kayak to "expand my horizons". This has been one of the most practical endeavors I've seen so far. Sometimes we start with a concept and by the time we've tweeked it it's totally different, ho pe you didn't hurt your brain figuring this out! Lol

Are u using a rudder to steer? Also for anyone else, u can take the head off the motor like he did and spin it around reversed then attach it. This way the handle isn’t is the way. Came out good lots of info to make ur own set up.
