I bought a set of Pittsburg half inch deep sockets about 10 years ago they have made me a ton of money and they are still going strong so I can't complain about them too much. You can tell that my 21 mm gets used a lot though because you can hardly read the laser etching😁

The Sunex are rolled stamped also. It's in the product description. I have the deep impact set from Sunex it's laser etched and rolled stamped as well. They make a really fine and durable product. You can't go wrong with them.

As a very quick turnaround apprentice. (1st month learning the ropes) (2nd month doing more like brakes and alternators) (And JUMPING all the way to an engine swap and a head removal in the 3rd month) And after 8 months pretty much 90% in between I will tell you that those Neiko impact sockets are DEFINITELY worth the money. For 170ish and some change you get 10-24 no skips, including 20mm And also 3/8 to I believe 1 1/4 it covers EVERYTHING from a darn drain plug to an axle nut. Seriously, it’s well worth it, even without the warranty I still see it as a win for the apprentice looking to get his hands dirty. Very happy with how they’ve turned out in the past few months.

I like the way you have categorized the sets, by “best budget”, Best Midtier, etc”. Made in USA, I don’t know why anyone would go Snapon when Wright is available. As you said, Wright price is not bad, look at their other tools, much higher price.

Guys that swear by the tool truck kool-aid are just too lazy to save a lot of bucks & buy stuff out wright. My deal breaker with Matco was when they tried to sell me a 3 power tool kit for $695.00 & 1 tool was a light back in 2012. I ain't been on a tool truck since! Started in Dewalt 12v MAX & ended up with Milwaukee M12 & M18 lines.

I just got the tekton 1/2" master set and its very nice. I did laugh at the box saying it needed 2 people to lift when it arrived, but it is about 45 lbs. I also got the chrome 3/8" and 1/4" sets because I only wanted to buy once and not worry about missing sizes. Id been waiting a year since I didnt need them right away but after the price inflation I decided to bite the bullet on black friday. I have not done any real heavy duty work yet but so far Im really liking these!

I purchased my Sunex master 1/2 metric set & beat the snot of them with Nitrocat 1250K air impact gun, Dewalt cordless 1/2 impact, Milwaukee Gen2 1/2 one-key impact & have yet to break 1 or render them not usable. The case needs some help but is still holding on so i recently purchased a new set retired my old set to my second vehicle with my Gen1 mid-torque impact for roadside emergencies or smaller quick jobs. I purchased my original set around 2013 or 14 & depend on my tools to make a living & not fail so i highly recommend cause if they can survive my mobile mechanic business then they deserve to be purchased. I also own their 3580 3/8 master set with the same results & have never warrantied a thing!

I work in a steel mill and can confirm we are very hard on tools. Wright, Proto and Sunex are the impacts we’ve got. We’ve had issues with the Gearwrench stuff breaking, but full disclosure we generally run 3/4” and 1”impacts, occasionally 1/2”. I’d buy Wright or Proto solely because it’s made in USA.

I have some old made in the USA Craftsman impacts. I haven't broken 1 yet & I've been using them to maintain our small fleet of medium and heavy duty trucks for over 20 yrs. I don't buy much of new Craftsman since they aren't made here. I think there's better value than them now. I also have a few Wright Tools. Not impacts but some ratchets, sockets & wrenches. They were my dad's. I honestly didn't know they were still around. I've never seen them for sale anywhere. I've also never broken one, so that says something. Thanks for the video.

Grey Pneumatics "Duo" socket sets, if you really want a one socket for every task option. Impact rated, thin as a chrome walled socket, comes in comprehensive sets for an amazing price. Lifetime warranty. They're tough as nails, too. I have full sets and use them daily for years. Probably more close to a decade. Every bit as tough as my Snap On sets, for about a quarter of the cost. Their ball swivel impact sockets are amazing, too!

I use Wright and Grey Pneumatic! My 3/8" stuff is Grey Pneumatic. My 1/2" stuff is Wright. I'd prefer to get Wright 3/8" but lately they are damn near impossible to find. My extensions and adapters are a mix of Proto and Williams. Williams is another brand to look out for too. Once my Grey set wears out I'll consider buying Williams USA 3/8" which are the exact same thing as Snappy for a fraction of the price. I do like Grey Pneumatic swivels. I catch a lot of flak for not buying off the truck or harbor freight. I'm the one who uses the tools. I know how to find quality without paying an arm and a leg. They are durable tools.

I have Sunex for all of my regular impact sockets, short and deep, 1/2 drive and 3/8 drive, metric and SAE (Matco ADV and Cornwell BluePower as well, but theyre basically sunex) and no problems at all. As far as my wrenches though my SAE wrenches are Wright Grip wrenches and i will never go back. I have Taiwan wrenches for my metric and SAE from 1-5/16 up to 2. I also have 3/8 drive short and deep SAE and Metric (4 sets) of universal impacts from Blackhawk and havent had a provlem with them either. For 1/2 drive I think I'm going to get Icon to see how they are. Only problem I've had with the Blackhawks is that the 3/4 deep is starting to get burrs on the ball inside from one use, but that was also because I had it on a Milwaukee 1/2 high torque with an adapter. If it had been with my 3/8 it would still be smooth like butter

Impact's I've been coveting lately are the Milwaukee Shockwave, they have stamped and painted large numbers. If someone is starting out in automotive repair I'd suggest getting a chrome 3/8" set in shallow and deep and impact 1/2" in deep probably all you'd need for a long time

Same for me. I’m in the market for a full Metric/SAE 1/2” impact set, and I think I’m gonna go with the Milwaukee. They are pricy but I really like how the numbers stand out, I’ve waisted enough time figuring out what socket is what at work with the old worn sets. My second choice would probably be the Tekton though

I just purchased the Milwaukee. They seem to be good quality, however, I haven't used them yet. The markings are nice and easy to read. They don't provide much information on the steel type or coating. They're made in China. I wish they were made in Taiwan, but that probably won't happen because Milwaukee sold out to a Chinese company.

I think my favorite budget set is actually the 3/8 drive Makita sockets they make for impact drivers. It's $25 a set I believe, and they come with 9 pieces, a 1/4 inch hex adapter, and a silicon sleeve they all fit nice and snugly into. Yes, they seem almost purpose made for impact drivers, but they seem to be pretty high quality and have actual engraved numbers on them. I would happily recommend them.

I've been extremely happy with my Grey Pneumatic impact sockets. Even went so far as to buy the 3/8" and 1/4" sets as well. I know 1/4" impacts are not needed, but... The swivel versions are Ball Swivels, not floppy universal type swivels, and are in shallow and deep. Plus they offer the same variety (shallow/deep & shallow/deep swivel) in a magnetic version, they are so handy when trying to hold onto small nuts and bolts without losing them in "Engine Compartment Limbo".

I have been 100% satisfied with each and every piece of Tekton tools. Besides the unbelievable warranty they are slowly moving their tool line to Made in America. The warranty is , In my opinion , the best and easiest. Break something, take a picture of it, download to them and they ship you a new one normally within 24 hours. I do not have their impacts (yet) but their chrome sockets and wrenches are very nice. Fit snd finish is spot on.

You didn't mention it, but Tekton has both laser etching, and roll stamp marking on their impact sockets. I'm well over 70 years old now and have used all types of tools from many different manufacturers in my lifetime. I even worked in Sear's tool department way back when the Craftsman tools were USA made and purchased many of them myself. Overall, for the money I lean more towards Tekton than any other brand. I will qualify that with the exception of their USA-made slip joint pliers, which to me were inferior in fit and finish to their other Taiwan made pliers. All their socket sets are no-skip and available in different sized sets to meet different individuals need. They have a great full selection of individual sized sockets as well, but a little pricey compared to price per socket in the sets. Their customer service is outstanding and getting a replacement is so simple and painless.

I've used Pittsburgh impacts for years with no issues but when it came time to replace the front suspension on my rusty Tahoe, I decided to get complete sets of Gear Wrench Sae and Metric. They're thicker and look better than the Pittsburg but that comes at much higher cost. I don't expect I'll ever break one which is probably a good thing since I've heard nothing but bad about GearWrenches warranty process.

Im starting off as a heavy duty mechanic and I bought the master 3/8 and 1/2 from Tekton. After alot of research they seemed to be the best choice. Just think about it, Snap On is very expensive but most of their tools are quality. Their tools have a life time warranty, but you have to wait for your Snap On guy to come out to warranty a item or you contact them and they'll send you your replacement. As for Tekton you are getting basically that same service for what...half the price, personally I think the Tekton warranty process easier. Only "down" side there is a truck not coming to your shop every week. But that part shouldn't be a factor if the average person is buying them(someone who doesn't work at a shop). With the bigger brands your paying a little more for that warranty and service while Tekton is just as good in that department. Im not wanting to be in debt at 18 so I did my research 😁 These videos are greatly appreciated... more Tekton videos would also be appreciated

I got the cheaper deep 1/2 impact sets from HF. SAE is no skip from 7/16 to 1-1/4. The metric set has a 10mm, then skips 11, 12, 16, 20, 23, 25. Etc, but it gives me some of the common axle nut sizes including 27, 30, and 32. I don't like how the smaller sizes (below 9/16 & 14 mm) just taper at the end, I would prefer the full length step like the Tekton or the more expensive HF version. I Found a lug nut situation (in Colorado, not the Himalayas) where I needed a 20mm so I bought a Tekton. It looks nearly identical, same height, wall thickness, etc, but the finish is quite a bit better than the HF. The Tekton Deep sockets have both laser etching and rolled stamp markings.

5:43, Gene Olson invented the 'Flank Drive Wrenching System' back in 1965. Gene Olson will retire this year after working for Snap-on for over 66 years. Snap-on got two patents for a 'Flank Drive Wrenching System' in 1965 and Snap-on invented 'Flank Drive Plus Wrenching System', back in 1990. The rest is history so it doesn't matter what you believe! Thank you Gene Olson and thank you Snap-on. There is nothing like 'Flank Drive' sockets and especially, there is nothing like Snap-on 'Flank Dive' 6-Point Combination Wrenches, and Snap-on 'Flank Drive' 6-Point Flare Nut Wrenches.

There is an extremely negligible difference between chromoly and chrome vanadium, but if you use the best heat treating process possible Chrome vanadium is slightly better, that is just the cold hard fact here. It can retain a higher hardness at the same ductility level and shock resistance it's just simply a little better. The problem is it's usually a little brittle because people are too lazy to make Bainite. With that said I think I could make an indestructible chromoly socket, I've been pretty thoroughly impressed with a 4140 tomahawk I made 9 years ago. My brother has been splitting wood with it all this time and it hasn't broke, but more impressively I kept the heat treat pretty aggressive so it holds an edge pretty well. Also you don't have to have molybdenum or vanadium, I'm made a 1060 one is just as old and has been beaten up just as much, it's harder and has sustained a few very small chips in the blade, but with that said it is a harder thinner more aggressive edge with very reasonable normal ax damage. I think Chrome vanadium is the correct metal to use but I could make an awesome socket out of just about anything with over 0.4% carbon to be honest. L6 S7 or L2 tool steel would probably make the best socket imaginable but would be complete Overkill.

i use my Tekton crome 1/2" drive sockets as impacts. i also put a 4' conduit on the end of the breaker bar when the impact won't remove the bolt. it seems i hate tools and want to hurt them. i work in a steam plant and steam will do evil things to bolts and nuts when it leaks by. i count on the warranty but haven't broken anything yet in 4 years.

That comment you made about the 20mm socket was kinda funny to me, because on numerous occasions where I go to take off wheels from a car (usually it's a Ford) and the lugs are so swollen my 19.5/18.5 flip socket just gets stuck. I still do not have a 20mm, and that's the only odd ball size I have needed numerous times

I have some old Craftsman tools that I will some day pass on.....they have plenty of sentimental and useful value and were well taken care of over the years. Having said that, my newest tools are mostly (90%) Husky, enough to fill out an entire 46" tool cabinet of the same brand. I have no issues with Husky hand tools at all not to mention the ease of replacement just 11 minutes drive away. Could I get much better quality? Sure, and pay a ton extra, but for my daily driver tools they suit my needs perfectly. I'm sure the same can be said of Icon and Tekton.
