I’ve previously had an 88 & a 500 over the last few years. I had sold both of em totally regretted it. I have since just picked me up another 88 20 inch pistol grip! Totally love these firearms! Simple, easy to use, clean, disassemble etc. & great defense weapons, very reliable.

I bought a Mossberg 500 in 1998. Years later I cut the barrel to the length of yours and added a front and rear pistol grip and the same shell holder you have on the side. Love this shotgun!
I just bought one. Seems like a great home defense weapon .
please people, always quadruple check the chamber to make sure its clear, and never let any one see it that is not skilled. i learned the hard way....

Sir, i, salute you for defending your family against that shitbag waste of air, glad your family is doing okay.Have a goodin!
When it comes to home defense, you don't want to use something that may penetrate walls and accidentally kill an innocent person in the house. Only the attacker. However, as some have pointed out, the shells shown in this video will easily penetrate walls, therefore, they are not ideal for a home defense round. However, I live by myself and don't have anybody else to worry about shooting haha
i bought the mossberg maverick security , pretty much the same gun and about half the price.
Good choice for home defense Firearm. I had the same shotgun. My model was The Mossburg 500 JIC model. Came with a carry bag an the finish on the receiver was different an my bolt was black parkerized so was the finish on the receiver. I kept my house Gun loaded with Military grade buckshot.
Great shotgun, poor facts, I would strongly recommend you go test your overpenetration first hand before you go blasting away with your shotgun. Sheetrock is not good for stopping anything, even birdshot. It might not kill someone going threw a wall but it could definatly blind them, if you are concerned for your family I would make sure you are aware of the danger you could become if you are not properly trained or educated, that's coming from someone who sleeps with a loaded 12 gauge with 00buck at the bedside.

Perfectly said! Thank you for bringing that up...people just do not understand!!! (Regarding home defense; most are loaded for bear when un-necessary...)
OOO Buck will DEFINITELY penetrate walls. Extremely powerful!
It'll be better once you add a light mount and flashlight. Light is critical for a home defense gun.
One of these with 1.75 inch buckshot minishells would be perfect. Firepower AND stopping power.
Very infomative. Very nice and simplistic shotty! Cool video man.
good review! its a beautiful gun, I hope to get one myself.
Sweet gun ! love mossberg 500 shotguns .
Thanks for the info, I have been considering changing over my 1985 model 500 turkey gun. Am going with a 18 1/2 " barrel, but maybe I'll stay with the regular stock.
Got one on the way! A mean looking firearm to be sure. Can't wait to get it.
Great review, Thank you for the input!
When you have to absolutely obliterate everything in the room and the next room look no further. Hell might end up in your neighbors walls also.
I have that shotgun I changed the grip and forend with hogue pistol grip and forend it made a huge difference I can't explain it here but you need to do it I also added a rail and red dot optics with a laser my shots hit right where that laser is and it's awesome
Let's see where do we start here #1 Buckshot will definitely penetrate a wall and the person on the other side #2 you do have to aim with a shotgun #3 not having a stock is a huge disadvantage and has no real advantage in shooting
Try putting your shells in upside down. Turn the gun to your left on its side with the shell holder down and pull them from the bottom, you will notice a shorter distance to the loading tube. Much faster reload than pulling them out from the top and over the top of the gun.
i just bought a mossberg 500 and i love it
Agree about the stock... Planning on fitting mine with a tactical...
LOVE this gun. Most people will run when they hear you pump the thing. I guess everyone has their own opinion and their favorites.
That is one sexy shotgun I'm looking around for a shotgun myself
Totally agree! Good gun for home.
I have a mossberg 500 with stock loaded ready to go, but I have my Winchester model 1300 “defender” pistol grip next to my bed as well for home defense (I have a light mounted on it plus strobe) . I believe this is the best weapon for home defense. You have to worry about ar15’s rounds going through walls (especially drywall) so that is a concern. I believe they discontinued the 1300 defenders but I’m not sure. My mossberg 500 stays loaded downstairs if I’m down there and need immediate access to it. You can’t go wrong with a good 12 gauge shotgun. That is just my opinion and I’ve had a lot of experience on all small arms being ex-army infantry 11bravo. I would take my 12 gauge any day over my pistols for home defense.
I hope this guy never shoots a wall intending on it not going through lol

Perfect. I have the same one, except mine doesn't have the heat shield. Purchased in the 1990s. Where did you buy that extra shell holder?
Yes, this one came with the heat shield already installed.

Get the 18.5” with folding stock
Racking a shotgun after an intruder is in your house, does two things, (1) It tells the intruder that you are armed, and (2) If he is armed, he can sit tight and wait! Armed confrontations only last a few seconds. Why give the intruder a, "Heads Up by racking your shotgun?" The only sound that he should hear is, "Pop, Pop, Center Mass." You know your home better than the uninvited guest. Why would you want to give him a nano increment of leverage? Keep one in the tube, with the safety on!
Birdshot is a great choice. At least for the first few shells. If they still want to play after those you can give them a buckshot.
I don't mean to burst your bubble, but you got your info mixed up. The shotgun in this video is a Mossberg 500, I can tell because the safety is on the back of the receiver close to your thumb. All Maverick 88's have the safety in front of the trigger. Both shotguns come in both configurations. Live long and prosper.
Great gun! Same one i got. Don't say shotgun won't penetrate walls, because thats not true! It all depends on the load ur using. All buckshot and slugs will penetrate dry-wall. There are some birdshot that may not when u start to get in the #7, 8 range.

I use a remington 11-48 semi auto. I have seen many more misfeeds in a pump due to mishandling than I have ever had in my semi auto. I shortened the wrist on the PG and cut 2 inces off the stock. 18.5 in cylinder bore with a 2 shot extension. I got it for $170 and it has gone through 1000 shells without a failure.
Great choice.u can't go wrong with a mossberg.I heard the hogue replacement pistol grip is a lot easier on the hand though then the factory grip.especially if you're shooting sumthing as hot as 00 or slugs...but yea...great vid man...
Nice I like the shell carrier .
Awesom vid! Just put a light on mine. For a home defense shotgun I wanted a light. To me its a safety feature. I want to make damn sure I identify my intruder. Wouldnt want to think of accidentally shooting someone else. Used a laserlyte rail and just a mag lite XL50 and had a 1 inch scope ring. Super easy and not much money at all.
Great review! I JUST bought this gun online today and am getting it shipped here to California. You have NO idea how hard it is to find this shotgun today in a 7+1 capacity. Everyone is making a run on this shotgun at the moment because of all the craziness going on. I plan on buying a good adjustable stock from ATIGunStocks. What type of good home defense ammo do you recommend for a shotgun, krazy86cu?
You must be into some heavy shit bro if you're sleeping with a shotgun next to your bed LMAO!!
This may be your _favorite_ home defense shotgun but not the best. That honor goes to the mossberg 590 cruiser. It was designed for close quarter combat with an aggressive standoff to avoid over pressuring the barrel when fired w the muzzle up against a body or object.

Yeah, this was over a decade ago. I’ve since gathered that buck can absolutely go through a wall lol. My HD gun is currently my trusty Glock 9mm with hollow points
Love pistol grips
If you live in a house (no common walls like an apartment) I'd stick with the 00 and just don't aim low (gotta keep rover safe). If you share walls with people, you might go with a goose load, and don't spare the ammo. Another philosophy is stacking a variety of ammo in your magazine. Like loading so you fire some goose, if the threat hasn't quit, some 00, and if it still isn't over your last shell in the magazine is a deer slug Odds are just racking that 12 gauge will scare most people away
The 12 gauge with most 00 buckshot, fires 8 or 9 .33 caliber pellets at about 1200 feet per second. Each pellet carries about as much energy (approximately 175 ft./lbs.) as a .380 ACP.
Several years ago my wife and 13 year old daughter were sleeping upstairs as a burglar broke into my house. I was asleep on the couch and had a Mossberg 500 pistol grip pump with a combination trigger lock set one number away under the couch. he broke in through the attached garage using a crow bar and a car jack, and proceeded into the house as i hid behind the couch, gun in hand. It had a tactical LED light with strobe, which i had turned off, it was pitch black. He was wearing a cheap set of
Sick setup
I have this exact same setup. Hit 10/10 clay pigeons first time shooting a gun. I can't tell the difference in recoil between buck, slug or birdshot with the pistol grip. The bead sight is accurate if you know how to use it and i had no problem with the pistol grip. however my friend smacked his lip open!
Thank you Thank you :) This video was the best I have seen as far as loading and other info.

You are going to have to turn it around when you go to load, so you might as well have the shells turned around in anything that holds shells like that. "You should think before you load!"
I have this in 410, great to have around for the wife, and I wouldn’t hesitate to grab it either in a self defense situation
I went and paid for a Mosberg 500 on Saturday have to wait 10 days for the background check to clear which is fine cant wait to get it. 00 Buck Shot stops the Zombies.
I have seen reviews saying that pistol grips are NOT for accuracy, then you will see one video, an old man, literally hitting targets at crazy distances with his pistol grip. I think its better for the house as you can, and there is no defending this, be more mobile, BUT on the flip side, I DO believe one should definitely be trained on a pistol grip and know what they are in store for. I have a pistol grip Mossy 500 JIC II and when I first shot it off, holy shit, was NOT expecting that kick.
unless you ae using bird shot or clay target rounds a 12 gauge will penetrate walls. oobuck will penetrate 12in.

I bought the 20 gauge for the wife and she love it.
thats exactly where mine is!
Nice video!
The 00-buck you are loading are loaded with nine .38 cal balls. Those .38 cal balls will go through multiple walls with ease unless they strike a stud. And since it a shotgun, you are essentially guaranteed that most of your pellets will miss the studs. Just food for thought. You still need to think about your backdrop when shooting a load that hot.
nice, clean, leathal looking set up....I am going to buy one this week, but can`t decide on the shorter 5 plus1 mossberg ...or the 7 plus 1....I like the shorter one but 8 shots....keeps me thinking I like the one you got...lol
well may viewers have pointed out that the kind shells I have in the video will definitely penetrate interior walls which you don't want. If you live with others in the house you are going to want a low powered bird shot. It still may penetrate walls, but its less likely than buck. As far as stopping power... I think the pump sound of a shotgun is more than enough to scare off most intruders ;)

If I pull a gun on somebody (Which I seriously hope o never have to) I don't want them to hear it and have any kind of warning until I have it aiming directly at their chest. I don't buy into that idea of Scaring them away with the sound. They cities just warn them and let them have a chance to get the jump on you. Just my opinion

Nice video. Well done.
Its all good. But if you plan on using that pistol grip you may considering investing in a laser for aiming purposes since you will be pretty much shooting from the hip. You should try a shoulder/pistol grip stock set up. I have one on my Benelli M4 and it rocks. Although it will be difficult operating the safety since Mossberg puts theirs on the top of the receiver. Good luck with it!

Nice review. There is an incredibly well done test video on the subject of what load to use in a 12 gauge shotgun in a home defense situation by IRAQVETERAN8888 . 7.5 bird shot is the largest shot that did not go through 4 layers of drywall at 12 feet. Everthing else overpenetrated into the next room, ie: the family you are trying to defend.
Place your shells brass down on your side saddle, makes for faster reloading.
Low brass vs high brass(bird shots/buck shots/slugs) all comes down your ammo. Buckshots for sure will go through walls
I have this exact gun. You better be damn ready for a hell of a kick. If you are older, smallet, a little sickly, or anything else like that you wont be able to handle this gun with a heavy load. Buck shot literally made my palm hurt for days. And i was three hundred lbs at the time. I put a stock on mine
Very nice review I must say.
My favorite baby !!!!!
Thanks for clarifying that! I had no idea. Luckily for me the only person living with me at the moment is my dog, so I shouldn't have to worry about that lol. I reckon birdshot would be a better choice then?

Birdshot is an excellent option for 'home defense' and is more...than enough to get it done! blackgunsmatter
since you have the usual pistol grip that mossberg's come with, that little stud on the grip for slings how good is it? i have the 500 "breacher" and want to put a sling on it but i dont trust that little stud for rough fast shooting/shotting drills. im afraid of that little thing coming out when i throw it around my back real quick to go to pistol when at the range
I want one for home defense just because of the shorter barrel, can you take the pistol grip off and put an adjustable stock on it?
Good luck using the sights
I have this gun but want to remove the pistol grip and replace with a pistol grip stock combo like the banelli m4. Can I do that with this model?
