    Just as a reminder, there are also ham users who volunteer at rail museums and other museums who operate only on the premises under a group license. They do not have a ham license of their own. These less expensive radios allow us to own our radios and add features, such as reduced power or weather channels, as we see fit. Having your own radio is also a great incentive to getting licensed yourself. At one museum, on VHF, we are very disciplined and every conversation will end with our call sign. At another, on UHF, it is a Wild West show! Nobody has a clue about the call sign. Budget radios really help us, especially at big events where most operate in receive mode only. Keep up the good videos.

    I have the UV17R and the GT5r. Also just ordered the Radioddity version of the Baofeng UV5rx3 tri band as a basic 220 radio with their nagoya version of a tri band antenna that was on the black friday sale. I also have the VX50 which I think is Alincos version of a FT65 with FT70 air band which I have both those Yaesu radios and the FT70 has better Air band recption than the Alinco. Try the DR-1801 (not DM-1801 - its fully different) used as analog radio only, despite DMR capability. Priced ca. 50 USD. It comes with a good front end, fully resistant to overload by nearby broadcast FM stations witch eliminates other Baofengs from use in city environment. Real 5W, good enough transmit audio and 1000 channel. Difficult to program though.

    I think Baofengs, with their outdated RDA1846 chip, are a thing of the past. The world has moved on. The new hit is the Beken BK4819 chip. You find it in the Retevis RA89 and the popular Quansheng UV-K5, 5(8), 6 series. RX-wise (both sensitivity and selectivity), the Retevis RA89 is close to the Wouxun UV9D, which is an excellent superheterodyne radio. But unlike the UV9D, the RA89 costs well under $100. The Quansheng radios are not as sharp as the RA89 in terms of RX, but they are much better than Baos at a similar price. Plus, they are so much more fun to play with.

    Anyone with an understanding of these radios, I would like some input. firstly Im tech savvy enough to probably set a couple of these radios up, so whether im capable isnt the question. The question however is, Im trying to find a couple of suitable radios for me and my girlfriend to potentially communicate from range in the event of a power grid failure or something of that nature. are radios like the UV-82hp something I should even be considering, or am I confusing these devices with something else. Disclaimer I have about an hours worth of knowledge at this point, this is all alot to take in.

  • @ac7fd

    @ac7fd

    8 ай бұрын

    The first question is: do you want a radio that requires a license like basically all in this video or something license free (FRS)? Next there is GMRS which is a license that costs $35 for 10years and covers the entire family which would be my choice if I wouldn't be interested in learning for the HAM license. Then another important question: how far away from each other will you be? None of these radios will talk 10 miles over 2 hills, a forest and a city (without repeater). All of them will do 10 miles line of sight (e.g. from a mountain to another). I find about a mile range realistic in urban environment, a lot more on open range. The UV-82HP is a decent affordable choice....but requires the HAM license. If you're not interested in learning for that license: get a legal Part 95 certified radio.

  • @RedBirdTCG

    @RedBirdTCG

    8 ай бұрын

    @@ac7fd That information helps alot. It sounds like the range wouldnt be sufficient without a repeater for my use case. I live in a rural area so im not super concerned about legality. Probably one of the only times they would ever get turned on would be in the situation described above. assuming I was closing the distance gap a bit, would the UV-9G be a decent option. I believe thats only a GMRS radio.

  • @xmacleod

    @xmacleod

    8 ай бұрын

    I've seen the pictures of FT65's with their "Made in China" label, but I suspect this may have been a temporary thing (pure assumption). I have one and it is made in Japan, or at least it says it is. Accidental story time, I didn't realize I was going to say this much initially: However, the quality isn't as far above Baofeng as I would have liked. It outputs 4.75W, which is about 2W more than my "8W" UV-5R, but the sound quality is about the same as a UV-5R. Ability to hit and receive from repeaters is about the same. It actually had turned me off of Yaesu and I started looking at Icom for a bit... But Icom prices made me return to Yaesu. I ended up recently purchasing a Yaesu FT-70DR for $175 and it blows every other HT I own out of the water for picking up signals, sound clarity, sound range of the speaker, and it outputs about 6.5W and has Fusion abilities. I should have just spent the extra money the first time. (Wattage tested on high power at 146.480 MHz on all radios. I know that doesn't say everything about a radio but my testing instrumentation is very limited so it's that and anecdotes about how well I can pick up weak/distant weather radio stations is all I can provide first hand. :))

    Well, Im not so agree with you with this rank. In my opinion the best handheld radio right now is the Quansheng k6 with the orange screen. This radio is so fun and has a really good battery power managment holding up to 5 or 6 days in standby. With all of thous “hack“ firmware on it its has more features than all of the radios mentioned in this review including a band scope. That uv-17 only hold up for two days in standby and has a little worst receiver costing more than the k6

    I can't imagine the K6 receiver is better than anything mentioned here, except for maybe the 'feng radios. The fact that you can hack it and add features is nice, but since those features aren't available from the factory, that says alot about the company itself.

    I wouldn't put any radio on my list that isn't spectrally pure. Let the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments begin. 🙂

    just ignore people who comment the price isnt the same, fully formed adult human beings should understand how things work in the world, if they cannot then you dont need to waste time and energy, you cant help those people, you cant fix them, they are how they are, stumbling through life one mistake at a time. they never figure anything out. *bumps into a wall on my way out*
