BEST GUITAR for Metalcore, Djent, Thall & Low Tuning

Музыка

The Squier Bass VI is surprisingly the best guitar for djent, thall, metalcore and any low tuned metal subgenre. Given that modern metalcore and deathcore is tuned lower, using this bass as a guitar actually works better than an 8 string or 9 string guitar. When learning how to write a metalcore song, it's important to have the instrument for the job, and I believe this @fender is the right guitar for detuned metal. I comfortable go to Double Drop B, C# and even lower with thicker strings, to accomplish a similar Darko US sound, or Loathe.

    I love baritones and that bass 6 is narly, but I love my custom Kiesel 9 string because one of the 9 string pioneers, Joshua Travis, did what most people overlook especially on a 9 string besides lower registers, which is making up your own tuning that hones in on your unique sound as a well balanced in between. A rhythm and lead parts to accompany said rhythm. And 9 strings gives you a lot of ways to experiment and slowly build it. So it may not make sense to anyone else, but they’re not writing with it.

Obviously it’s his technique with picking and altogether techniques he’s learned along the way. And right now, I’m getting the new Ibanez black label because it has a nice 28 inch scale which is perfect for me when it comes to lower registers that you can get away with lighter strings and cover more of the 8 string tunings. Black label is definitely becoming much more established as its own part of Ibanez compared to the newer axe design labs so I sold my Ibanez baritone which was a 27 inch scale but it’s quite outdated…or at least that’s what I tell myself because you probably already know but…”NO! @@BrendonKPadjasek yea, 28 I find great to be for 8 strings and baritone. I love that they released a new 9 finally but they really failed in the scale length by making it 28. I can see why they did, at least from my perspective and that’s because when the schecter damien platinum 9 was my 9 string, that 30in scale is really amazing for the bottom strings and getting away with a lot thinner strings for the lower tunings, but those top strings feel REALLY tight and definitely have to either bump them up orrrr be very light handed. I really enjoy the 29in scale length the most. It feels like the best of both worlds. And yea, I’m also a producer so when I seen you talking about the actual mix down process, people don’t realize that you really need to thin things out and let the bass do its job…subjectively even more so than with a 6 string with the lows needing to fit in with the floor tom/bass drum and bass.

    Damn I didnt realize something like this existed. Seems like the best of both worlds in terms of tuning low and having a standard neck width. My go to guitar is an 8 string legator and Ive always wanted a 9 string and a 6 string but this is like both at the same time lol When you use it to track bass are you tracking the guitar and bass parts separately still to avoid phase issues? It'd be insane if we could just track guitar and bass at the same time but I think thats wishful lol

    Yeah my go to for heavy stuff is usually my 8 string Ibanez and it does the trick but having something that’s even longer that can let me go even “heavier” with clarity is amazing. And it’s a fender related product and I love the way they play 0 phase issues because they’re different takes. That would be nice, and I often do that with demos, but now I can just record only the top string after I do the guitars (especially since I loop the part and do take lanes in Ableton. Such a blessing Maybe I’ll try doing bass on the middle pick up next time to compare

    On 5:52 you mentioned double Drop E. Does it mean that if you play Drop E1 on baritone it requires bass line in E1 (Which is standard for bass), or you meant E1 on baritone and E0 on bass? Because I believe when you were with Northlane you played a hella low tuned Dingwall with bridge cables to play 1 octave lower than guitar on "Vultures", for example, but i just not sure that E0 is even audible

  • @BrendonKPadjasek

    @BrendonKPadjasek

    For most of the northlane stuff I played in the same octave as guitar. The lowest bass went to drop F and then with songs like Talking Heads, went to drop C# on guitar (pitch shifter) I matched the octave of the guitar , instead of being an octave lower. Vultures I believe was also drop F but I can’t remember haha On structures None Of The Above, Fortune Fades was in double drop D, and I had a nightmare recording the bass for that one. It was doable, and Zack made it sound sick, but I wouldn’t suggest it haha

Surprisingly much better than my strat tbh Especially in the C# tuning. But the drop B held up also surprisingly well. It wasn’t perfect, but if I was playing a whole song through, like in the play through, I’d check tuning after and it was good enough to me. And I used it multiple times in the play through. This video just popped up in my feed because I've been researching this particular subject for a minute now and I have to comment that the Bass VI is not the best guitar of its kind for this style. It's actually probably the worst between the single coil pickups and the tremolo bridge. I was looking at the Schecter Hellcat, which fixes the bridge issue I have with the Squier, but that's also a thousand bucks I didn't want to spend on this experiment, especially when it still has single coils. So I went with the Gretsch G5260 Baritone I already owned and converted it into a Bass VI with a $12 set of bass guitar strings from Ernie Ball. The Gretsch baritone has a 30 inch scale, same as the Squier Bass VI, so all it takes is a thicker set of strings. No further adjustments needed unless you want to go thicker than 95 on the bottom. Then you might be doing a little filing. But with a hardtail bridge and mini humbuckers, the Gretsch sounds leaps and bounds better than the Squier! The only modification I might make is upgrading to TV Jones Power'Tron pickups because these Electromatics have a lower output than most humbuckers, but I'm always driving my preamp hard at the source anyway so it doesn't really matter. Just means I don't have to turn the output down as much after I reach saturation. But yeah if you want a Bass VI that actually stays in tune and has serviceable pickups for metal, look into getting a Gretsch baritone and converting it. Plays better, sounds better, even looks better!

    @@BrendonKPadjasek The problem with deciding the worst or best is that there's only so many options for this type of instrument, right? You're either buying a Fender/Squier Bass VI or a copycat of one from Harley Benton or Schecter. If none of those tickle your pickle, you have to look for 30 inch baritone guitars to covert like I did. So yeah let me rephrase because you're right. I should've used a phrase like "least optimal" based on specs, which is entirely personal preference. Truth be told, you can make any of these instruments work if you take the time to set them up properly. Now that I'm digging this Gretsch as a bass, I'm probably going to buy a Squier too just because it has the tremolo! I love playing these things like they're guitars. Give me all the effects! As long as I have another track with a properly intonated bass guitar laying down the rhythm, I can come in over top with the Squier whammy bar madness for leads and atmosphere. These things are also built for ambient guitar stuff! After 25 years of playing, I'm in love all over again!

Absolutely love it, although I'm still trying to figure out the best setup. There's something about the relationship between the correct pickup height and the string gauge that I am still trying to master. The M6 are hot, and I mean really hot, too the point that at max volume they only stop adding distortion to the signal if the pickup is 1cm away. I've used 100 and am now using 074 for the low E1 string but I'm not exactly sure how my DI signal should sound like. I guess that's a good topic for a video, should it be crystal clean? It's it ok or even desirable to have a DI track already distorted? (I'm connected to the hi-z input and my interface gain is at 0). So yeah, I love what I have but I feel like it should sound better, and I know that's all because of my lack of knowledge about the world of recording high output low tuned guitars with my computer. Just would need to put them deep into the wood so the sheer amount of strong magnets didn't kill the sustain. But that's only gonna make the sound even better when there are strong pickups in the wood as opposed to weak ones by the strings :)

    @@BrendonKPadjasekalso, another idea. Imagine wiring it in the way that the toggles for the bass cut and stuff that you didn't like anyway does split coils or switching between serial and parallel wiring and stuff like that instead. I also use C#1 tuning on 28/30” scale for 9 string. You said you use .090? the strandberg custom light set has a .084. They used to taper these for 28-26.25” scale to accommodate their headless bridge saddles. But i think after a hardware update they dont taper anymore. They’re the brightest nickel wound strings and have a higher breaking point. Ive tuned up to a G4 with a swapped .007 single string. Even though they cost $30, would you be open to trying that set? As you probably know already. Theres perhaps a pro to using 6 string over all vs 9 string being: less pickup winding, less mass, less weight, easier fingering like you said lol
