I think the music background helps him understand and hear the cadence, tone, and rhythm of languages, and he also knows basic phrases from it. Polyglots are often region-specialized, and if they’re not, they’re more focused on vocabulary and trying to understand the person and figure out how to communicate with them. They’re generally good at hearing different language families and conversing with new languages, but the specific guesses aren’t as strong because that’s not how their brains are wired

Love his Georgian alphabet shirt! As a native speaker of Shanghainese, Sherrisse's classic style Shanghainese (with a slight American accent) caught me off guard at first. I would probably come up the explanation for koala as “bear feeding on gum leaves” 喫桉樹葉個熊 or“no water” 勿用喫茶 as in the aboriginal language or “bear without tail”嘸沒尾巴個熊 as how they are called in Taiwan. I really appreciate her effort preserving the language by speaking it. The language/dialect is dying now and I think one of the reason is that the younger generations are so afraid of being judged and told that ours are not native/standard/fluent. So big thank you Sherrisse for demonstrating it. Thank you Cut for recruiting a Shanghainese speaker so more people know about the language of my hometown. Like what happened in Taiwan where the KMT government forbidden Taiwanese (Hokkien) in public. My generation in Shanghai has also experienced the era of suppression of the language/dialect. In fact, we are so afraid of being accused to be xenophobic by other Chinese people, so even the locals do not dare to use Shanghainese among ourselves nowadays. The latinisation and writing character set of Shanghainese are less popular or unified compared to Cantonese. But you can still find Shanghainese Siri for dictation in iOS and Shanghainese Wikipedia. The amazing thing about Shanghainese is that the language/dialect itself has experienced blending and evolving over the centuries. The accents and set of vocabulary used by our grandparents and parents are different from those of our generation. The accents of each district and county will also be slightly different. Again, it's so nice to hear the language from my hometown. Thank you Cut! Thank you Matthew for guessing it right!

I recognized Lao immediately and I even knew the song she sang. My grandma speaks Lao and my aunt (her daughter in law, not bio daughter) speaks Thai. My grandma never enforced the language with her kids or with me as one of her grandchildren but at 15, I started learning the language all on my own and now (17) I can speak well with my grandma and aunt, though I can’t exactly hold a conversation yet. I can fluently read and write Thai though.

  • @emmalake1653

I'm surprised you know of us! But few of us speak a Sámi language fluently, some of them are gone now. There are 15-20 Ume Sámi speakers left (us), about the same for Pite Sámi, Ter Sámi has lost all its speakers I believe. There were 2 but I think they recently died. Most Sámi languages have a couple hundred remaining speakers, and only two Sámi languages have over 1,000 speakers remaining. There are some people trying to restore the languages but smaller Uralic languages have poor documentation so learning on your own from limited resources is very difficult. There is also the pressure of forsvenskning (forcibly making everything more "Swedish") and whatever it is called outside Sweden that has unfortunately very successfully eliminated a lot of access between Sámi and their original culture/language/land. I would also love to see a Sámi language featured here! I would not be shocked if it didn't happen though.
