I thought that was kinda funny. By the way I HAVE used the memory card slot in PS2 cases sometimes when I went to compete with friends in Armored Core III back in the day. However I did also have a generic CD jewel case specifically for PS1 cards that carried 4 cards. I even separated my save files by game type. Two RPG specific cards a card just for action games and one for shmups. As for some of my favorites overall? I loved the PS1 and PS2 cases as well as my Dreamcast games. But I have a special type of nostalgia for that era because that's when I started buying my games on my own with my own money. Before then either they were gifts from family or they were my older brother's buys. The first console that was specifically mine having been the PS2 and the Dreamcast. My brother wanting nothing to do with the Dreamcast because he was spending too much time going up to date some married chick in Toronto that he met on EverQuest. A woman who ended up being his guild leader's wife no less. Yeah, that was awkward hearing about at the time. I was sitting there playing PSO and there my brother was bragging about being the other guy for this woman with four kids. Always pissed me off when he would pull the cord from my Dreamcast modem so he could go and flirt online. I thought it pathetic really.

Yeah, I take my time reading them so I can feel more comfortable playing the game and there was still stuff I missed. I remember playing FF7 in middle school and loved it. I played it again later in high school reading the manual again before I played and realized I didn't even know about materia growth the first playthrough.

I loved to take the manual with me when i had to go to work. Couldn't wait for work to be over to get back home to play again. But times have changed massively and tbh, i don't really enjoy playing video games anymore. Games are not appealing anymore and almost everything is digital. Even CD versions are another 50GB download at least and my gosh, all the day one patch crap... I miss the days when you bought a game, came home, plugged it in and the game was loaded within seconds and you could start playing. Manuals were always nice to look at. Especially the artwork.

Great video! I always see retro games in stores with just the cartridge so it was cool to see the cases. One you didn't do was the Xbox one cases which are a little weird they're thinner then the PS4, have uniformed boarder colors on the spine and for some reason the disk is on the left side when you open them not on the right its almost as if every case is backwards. I would have to say I love the PS1 and Switch cases the most!

Great topic! The larger cases such as 3DO were all about shelf real estate in the shops. I worked in an independent games shop back when the 3DO came out. The bigger the box the easier it would catch the customers eye over the competition. Back then there were more players in the field, it wasn’t just Sega and Nintendo anymore so the newcomers had to try and make themselves stand out and get noticed.

  • @HybridAngelZero

This is such a fun topic! I also have a huge soft spot for the PSone double-CD cases. After FFVII, they pretty much became a symbol of a big, epic game, to the point where some single disc games would still come in double-sized cases. And if course, the Switch is a huge favorite. I'm a pretty big fan of the cases for smaller media, I know you didn't talk about handhelds in this video, but I adore the cases for PSP and Vita games, too

For the PS1, before the long "box" cardboard case there were 2 different cases. The first one was clear plastic like the saturn games (1st release of tekken). Then there was a hybrid plastic/cardboard box like the toshinden 2 game. Finally they became cardboard longbox, just before the cd case.

It's also nice to see how there was a difference between regions in boxing, not only the box art. For example at Sega with the Saturn cardboard versions we had in Europe or the Blue Dreamcast jewel cases that where quiet unique, or cardboard Gameboy boxes in different sizes that came from Asian regions. Nowadays the cases seem all to be similar around the world besides artwork and title differences.

I used the memory card holders back in the day. If I was going to a friend's house to play some games, it was nice to just pop my save file in the case with the games I was bringing over. It did backfire on me once though. I traded in a GameCube game (can't remember what) and I didn't realize until later that I had left a memory card in the case and it was my only one. So not only did I lose my ability to save games, I didn't even get my 2 bucks for trading in a memory card!

North American SEGA SATURN cases are my all time favorite. Yes fragile, but if kept/found in good condition they are amazing. They have this shine on the front that illuminates the artwork so nicely when displayed. The later artworks that filled the entire cover are best exampled of this. A US Saturn collection also just look amazing all spined.

I gotta say I like the Vita cases a lot. They are like the Switch, which I would consider a second best. They are small but not too small, they are rectangular which is nice to display the art of the game and easy to put on a shelf.

I love the box for the Philips G7000 game "Quest for the Rings". It made the game feel a lot more magical as the game itself had horrendous graphics while the artwork of the manual was amazing. "Quest for the Rings" was 1 out of 3 games that incorporated tabletop gameplay. The other 2 were "Conquest of the World" and "The great wall street fortune hunt". Generally I really love the art style of the G7000 games from the European releases that were quite different from the north american releases.

Man, that Resident Evil 2 case brings back all kinds of nostalgia! My favorite cases are the SNES. The SNES was the first console I remember getting when I was a kid. We had a NES when I was very young, but I was a little too young to enjoy it until later.

I love the plastic Sega cases. Clicky and blocky like blockbuster VHS boxes. The Sega CD case is also super cool. I like the dimensions and the thick sides.

Genesis is probably my favorite case, just simple and classic and no beat-up cardboard to worry about. Famicom disc system game case are great as well. Love the discs and the case.

Great video, I was always fascinated by how the cases changed over the years too! It's quite weird that the Famicom had landscape boxes, but the NES had portrait. Then with the Super Famicom and SNES they swapped round, so we could never have the same artwork as Japan on the boxes because of the different orientation! Strange decision...

Johnny, I'm not sure if you missed it. But the Sega Genesis also had a plastic version of the 'red band' boxes, they were not just made in cardboard. In fact, one of my all time favorite console game cases were specifically those Genesis cases in plastic with the vertical "GENESIS" on the left side (the 'red band'). For example, just check the red band plastic case for the original Mortal Kombat, I have the original authentic one and it looks very good to this day. In my opinion the red band cases (in plastic) were the best one on the Genesis.

In the UK our Playstation single CD games had the same size cases as the double disc games. So were both the same thickness.

Some PlayStation 2 game cases also had a spot for your memory card. It was usually an rpg or game that took longer to beat and the card holder was there so you would know which memory card it was on and also if you were bringing it over to a friend or relatives house to play where you left off. My friend was in the hospital battling leukemia and I would play Final Fantasy X while he watched. It seemed like he was holding on just to see the ending of the game because once I beat the game I went down to the cafeteria to get a bite to eat and when I returned I thought he was just sleeping. So, I let him be and went home only to get a phone call saying he had passed away.

I love this PS1 PAL/Europe Cases, they were fantastic. Also the DoubleCD-cases of PS1 are great!! I think this 2 are defently my faves ones. What me realy drive nuts are the missing Instruction-manuals @new games. 99% of all games, these days, dont have any kind of Instruction-Manual inside. Bah... Great episode btw!! :D
