Best Flap Disc Brand (6 Brands Tested)? Let's find out!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Flap discs tested: Harbor Freight Warrior, DeWalt, Makita, Walter Flex Steel, Diablo, and Norton Red Heat. A rusty piece of sheet metal was cut into 6 pieces. Each flap disc was provided 2 opportunities for a total of 3 minutes to remove as much rust as possible. The sheet metal was weighed before and after each timed event to figure out how much rust and metal was removed. 100% of the video ideas are from viewers. I greatly appreciate all the support that viewers provide, allowing the channel to deliver unsponsored, unbiased, content!

You should do some more brands that specialize in abrasives. Weiler, Randor, and Benchmark are a few that come to mind. A lot of tool companies just make abrasives as an afterthought.

@@ProjectFarm I'm very thankful to my parents for being able to afford having me learn three languages still as a kid, even though i live in a 3rd world country. If it wasn't for me having english as a near-natural language, i'd never even dream of coming across content like this in my country's main language. To give you an idea of how screwed up things are here, major companies (even international ones, like DeWalt and Makita, which we have here) make shady deals to manufacture products of generally poor quality and to not allow any newcomers into the competition, forcing the population into buying substandard products for sheer lack of better alternatives. Importing anything is a major hassle and because of all the taxation, it ends up being prohibitive if one plans to use imported products often. Sometimes i get a bit desperate to leave but i get reminded of our worthless currency and just how little we actually make... There's no escape but dream of a better life through the internet and youtube. Thank you, Project Farm!

@Swampy exporting also has taxes and our shipping infrastructure is quite arcaic and inneficient. If one wants to "expedite" something out, we usually go to UPS or other international company, even though cost is a major concern. As an example, i recently bought some supplements from an american heatlh supplement retailer. They had three shipping methods: the slowest one that doesn't include any pre-paid taxes cost me 20 dollars. The middle one said that i was supposed to get my products within three weeks, already counting the time the parcel would spend in customs. That'd set me back 73 dollars. Yeah, major difference. And the most expensive promised to fly through customs and arrive at my doorstep within a week, since it included all taxes pre-paid. My order was worth 112US$. This shipping mode? Alone, 130$. So yeah, i guess i'm not going to choose that one

Yes! Piercing, friction, cutting etc. I worked a few years in yard construction. Concrete products just killed gloves. Like by the dozen. All those little sharp shards of crushed rock in the material plus the ammonia etc from the thousands of bricks... The only number I looked at when making glove decisions was, in the end, the cut resistance. I think it was because the worst the concrete could do wasn't actually the sandpaper-like scrubbing but instead the particles that were a tad bigger that cut the glove material. And yeah, technically all sandpapers "cut" grooves the size of it's grain - it's the many juxtapositioned cuts that loosens material. But the cutting I'm talking about are from specs like 0.5mm in size or so. Huge in terms of sandpaper and the average surface smoothness of landscaping concrete products.

I do a lot of body work panels and make various things out of 1/8" stock. I grind the weld first with a 36G grinding wheel then blend with 60G or 80G flap wheel. I do in some cases use the 36G as well. The Harbor Freight ones are just about useless. I generally buy Norton which work pretty good but I will try the Diablo. Like another guy wrote " Diablo makes good S#*t" I wonder if your experiments are better than the manufacturer. They seem more real world to me. Great job as always!

There'd have to be 3 or 4 tests averaged out to account for the imprecise nature of a test like that. Just off the top of my head. Could also do easier, less subjective tests like spraying each test onto a thin layer of oil on a vertical piece of metal, and seeing if each of them are capable of removing it.

I really like that you use different weights and times. I have found from using these products at work for 30 years that any grinding, cutting, and sanding disc it is best to let the disc do the work and not force it. They last longer even though they may cut a bit slower. You may be cutting slower, but by the time you stop to change wheels the total time ends up quicker. Also you put less stress on the tool which lasts longer too.

Interesting test to see how flap discs hold up relative to each other on rust/scale.... In general if you want to extend the life of any flap disc or sanding disc always remove the rust & scale surface first with either a grinding wheel, sandblasting, rust dissolver/ acid or (my preferred method) a diamond grinding wheel. Iron oxide is quite high on the Mohs hardness scale, & is an abrasive in its own right, Emery powder. You can see how glazed the edges of each flap are after the second test, & why they don't cut nearly as well in the 2 min test. Once you get to clean steel a fresh flap disc or sanding disc will cut beautifully.

Cubitron won one of the sanding paper tests he did. I don’t know why he didn’t include one of the 40 grain flap discs. But anyway, he does excellent and fair tests. Easy to understand and great way of not spending money in fancy, but poor performing brands…

@@alexander_konig_coaching Thanks, I don’t think I had seen that test. And I agree that his tests are as fair as can be done. I seldom find fault with any of his test methods and I certainly understand that he has a limit as to the number of brands he can test.

We can all thank Robert Bosch a German engineer, and his amazing R&D team for all the amazing products. Also he's worth almost 100Billion for a reason. Great quality products, priced accordingly. Diablo products rock!
