me watching this with a 30k income, paying rent in a small apartment and putting myself through uni part time by getting a second job every summer. can’t relate to any of this stuff but here we are. 🤪

I was making ~40k in a HCOL area and decided to go back to school for an advanced degree along the lines of my bachelor’s so that I wouldn’t have to take too many extra classes to qualify, came out making six figures right away. Best decision I ever made!

@@mikezerker6925 oh man that's like 400k in today's money! And that was before they made it a 6 year degree isn't it.

@@MikeAffholder no they made it a 6 year doctorate degree just 2 years before I started. That’s part of the reason the pay went up, plus a lot of old pharmacists were retiring so there was a shortage.

I'd say maxing out the IRAs and 401ks, choosing s&p500 index funds in both, is the best strategy at the $100k income level

One thing to consider is that spending 50k today to retire in today’s economy will be more like 75-90k in 20-30 years aka 1.8-2.2 million. Also if you have a spouse and will live together, probably not quite 2x but probably add like 50% more.

That’s obviously going to depend on where you live. I make less than 100k and own a house.

Decent homes in San Francisco are close to $2 million. You are not touching them with a $100K income. You need at least a $400K income and a $500k down payment.
