How long can you let seed sit on the soil before it's not safe to hit the weeds with Gly? Would a day or two after seeding be ok or would it be to late?

As long as the seeds haven’t germinated it would be fine.

Keep in mind any kind of moisture will open the seeds up so you gotta be careful

Any recommendations on shaded areas for fall or spring plots? Have about 1/8th acre in the woods but have filtered sunlight majority of the day. Looking to plant in the next couple of weeks.

Personally I would just use winter wheat or winter rye in that situation you would have best results with that

@@Whitetailobsessionoutdoors I usually do wheat / rye mix, but was thinking on adding white clover since it is almost 100% shade. Would you recommend tilling in leaves as well, or best to clear those out before tilling/planting.

I appreciate the info! I’m curious though. Why do you continue to disc your plots? Everyone has gone to no till. I still disc also. I’m just wondering why you prefer it.

Everyone has not gone to no till. No till currently is a trend that people are jumping on. No till definitely has a place for sure. But I like working on the green manure into the soil. It’s the fasted way to build organic matter. Also as far as no till planters nothing in a row is good for wildlife. Beans planted in rows you are loosing 40-50 percent of space with no crop and just allowing weeds to grow. Then you have to use chemicals to control the weeds if you just broadcasted them in the first place you wouldn’t of had the issue. Everyone talks about building top soil well that takes hundreds of years. I don’t have 100 years. I have 1-2 years to make it right. I can fix the soil and build up CEC and organic matter in 1-3 years to the point I virtually need no fertilizer. No till has a place in steep hills for sure. And really rocky situations.

I have an example of no-till. One month ago I was shaking my head. I had 2 areas with very little similarities not too far away. One area I planted with Domain Big Sexy. Tilled my summer cover crop of wheat. I pulled 3 weeds under 4" b4 I dragged it. That's it. The other area I planted rye 1 month later than the wheat. I had to mow it every week. This area was infested with weeds the year b4. I had a severe drought last summer & couldn't plant buckwheat in that area the summer of 2021. During July I missed a week of mowing. 2/3 of that area I mowed a few times. In MN weeds go away starting in August but the area I missed mowing once was a mix of tall weeds & tall crabgrass. In July I sprayed the weeds but that grass didn't seem to be affected. So early in August the deer stopped hitting the wheat & started helping me in the food plot. Lots of droppings like u would expect with a doe family group. They chewed off the top of that tall grass as well as tracking up the short fresh rye I planted. I tilled the area I killed off & no tilled the 2/3 area that looked hopeless 1 month ago. I selected Domain Big Sexy cuz of it's mixed blend but added a little bit of turnip that I've had great success with. 6 different types in a plot is a game changer when u have good chances of rain for a solid week straight 😄.

Yes, look into getting good organic matter going and planting things such as tillage radish. Also look into a product called retain from Killer food plots. I have zero connection with them but recommend it to clients it can help dry up the soil and also hold moister
