Really well put together video buddy! The brass tip insert making such a change is mainly down to 2 things. 1. The tip has introduced a change in internal diameter, creating a small choke point. You can hear the interruption in flow on the cold start clip, where there is a slight "hiccup" before the flow corrects itself. 2. The extra weight on the end due to the difference in density changes the harmonic frequency running through the pipe, in much the same way weighted bar ends do on a motorcycle handlebar. You would get a similar effect, albeit less pronounced, with a rolled tip on the steel pipes, be it inwardly rolled/outwardly rolled. The brass pipes sounded much nicer than either steel option, giving a deeper, richer tone through my earphones. Not sure its worth the ten fold price increase over mild steel though. Again, great video, really enjoyed it. Would be keen to see other materials tested such as copper or aluminium, finances allowing. Keep up the good work sir. 💪🏻

@OEMplusRESTO you're very welcome friend. Of course, feel free. I'm far from an expert myself, just a fabricator with a keen interest in flow dynamics, so exhaust & intake systems hugely interest me. I'm currently welding cast iron pipe whilst listening to your airbox to cone filter comparison. Really good work. 👍🏻

@OEMplusRESTO yeah, brazing can be difficult. Are you using oxy-fuel or TIG to braze? Cast Iron has its difficulties, but once you have the knowledge, it's not too challenging. Having an older mentor, much like you & your father, helps a great deal. They've already made the mistakes, and can teach you how to avoid them. The older generations are worth their weight in gold, so it's worth the time to listen. 😁

This was a fun test. I installed many many many exhaust systems. The best sounds always came from the thickest/ largest diameter pipe. Ive even used an old semi driveshaft as exhaust. Everything I've ever put together changed immediately with the right tips. Thick double layered stainless tips have always been my favorite. But i like the brass.

The amount of work put into this video is incredible! I too was holding onto the edge of my seat waiting to see what the brass pipes sounded like. As unfortunate as they were, I think the fact that we've figured out that brass tips make a difference to tone and drone is excellent. At least through the mic, the pipes sound better than the mufflers because they have a deeper 'growl' to it. In person though, I DO know that what sounds deeper on the mic often is much dronier in real life. Excellent video, love your level of care throughout these videos. All the little details make the difference. You've even gone above and beyond to do acceleration tests. As for the difference in performance, I reckon it has to do with back pressure. With the TA Technix muffler you probably have the perfect amount of back pressure compared to the restrictive stock muffler, and then with the pipes you might have TOO much back pressure causing you to lose power instead. Just a theory but this could be the case.

From my own personal experience: I had the TA Technix Muffler on my E46 320i with the M54B22. At first it sounded pretty much stock, but after a couple hundred to thousand kilometers of autobahn driving (basically a minimum of 3500-6000rpm constantly) it really burned free and was quite loud, and it sounded pretty nice. For a price of 180€ with a homologation in Germany (Teilegutachten) it was well worth the money! Edit: The fitment is tricky to get right, but you basically have to, for one, play around with the mounting system and adjust it so it sits flush and straight, and you can also twist the muffler a very tiny bit to get it to sit straight. I was sitting very nicely on my E46. The different length mounting pipes were miserable, I had to weld a piece of tubing to it to get it to fit, I had the same problem you had. Also I loved the different length end pipes, those made it look much better imo. In the end it was a bit finicky, but when you play around a bit you can get it to sit flush and straight!

Something interesting about sound / pressure waves that is likely the reason for the tips making a difference in the stainless exhausts is that if a pressure wave travels into an area with a suddenly smaller or bigger cross section it causes a difference in 'acoustic impedance' so some pressure waves can be resisted or bounced back by the sudden transition, so the fact the tips suddenly neck down and then flare out probably causes the fast and weak higher frequency pressure waves to be bounced back partially, reducing the high pitch droning sounds a little bit. Sorry if this gets a bit lost in Translation please look into it if your interested my explanation is probably not the best, keep up the awesome stuff and I hope your having fun :)

I was wondering about the clamp location, it will mute the ring of your brass pipes like wind chimes. I enjoyed your video in western ny

I was really hoping for a brass tips in brass pipes comparison too. But this video was still great. I definitely heard a difference in tone with each change. And now I know why the titanium exhaust I had that looked identical to the stainless, sounded different in my opinion, but my friends said it was the same. I should have recorded a before/after to prove it.

I really like the different pitch from the brass pipes. I know you already did the straight pipes, but I'd be curious to hear full brass exhaust tips from the back of a muffler, I'd love to see that on the stock muffler but you probably want to keep that intact, so modifying the TA Tecnix would be great as well

I wonder if the sound would change more drastically if the brass pipe was placed toward the middle of the exhaust where the exhaust resonator is located. I think it would have to create different harmonics than steel tubing because of the resonant shockwaves bouncing around off of a pipe with different material hardness properties. If I'm not mistaken theres much more interaction between the pipes and the sound shockwaves toward the middle at the resonator than there are at then end of the pipe where the muffler is located

The only brass piping I had in the car was the last time I picked a brass up and I'm not talking exhaust pipes...

Really great comparison! Loved this one even though i wont be able to either use the intake stuff nor the exhaust stuff here in germany :) Would love to see a comparison with an x-pipe for the mid section! Think that might be really interesting for performance and sound Also great to see how much the channel has grown over the time! As always really nice quality video :) Keep it up!

Brass is easily formed as it's soft. It would be interesting to apply some musical theory with regard to the overall shape of the tips and routing to see how it positively affects sound. The higher pitch compared to stainless would be fun with an X-pipe and a high-revving engine. It likely would scream!

Great video mate, well done! Really enjoyed the comparisons and didn’t expect the brass pipe, nice touch. I’ve recently gone back to stock w/ open valve from a stainless straight through backbox like the ta technix one and have to say it does feel like the car has lost some torque, not really sure why, was expecting the opposite given that the stock exhaust is probably more restrictive. It might just be in my head though as it’s a lot more quiet now.

I try to tell people this stuff thank you for demonstrating. I put new 2" thicker steel duals with aftermarket steel packs on my old 06 Mercury and its the best 4.6 2v sound in the world. Can you show why glass packs suck and to help people get better steel pack resonators free flowing exolaining velocity as well. Shake and bake brass pipes are neat
