So there are a few comments about Sonny not being very friendly. I can see it both ways. He didn't exactly say hi when you guys first met. But their explanation that he wanted to keep everything fresh makes sense. Throughout the shooting it was all business. Clearly, he wasn't there to be friends with you, even though I can totally see you guys bonding if he actually had the time for you. But towards the end, you can totally see that he was relaxed and made a joke about who you were talking to. Overall, I think he was friendly enough to do business with but not friendly enough to be friends with. He wasn't rude. I remember Andrew Zimmerm was really rude when he shot in Cambodia.

I’m starting to see why Cambodian food is being portrayed negatively in his other videos because he has producers controlling the narrative. You are describing a professional production and not a typical youtuber and his crew. That youtube channel is definitely backed by a corporation. Southeast Asian nations are fighting for the number one spot and can’t have Cambodia enter the scene in the billion dollar food industry. The red flag is intentionally putting maggots in the Prahok. There is no such thing. There is intent to degrade our unique, national food. Also, for Cambodian people, Barang means French (i.e. French people, French food....) and doesn't mean white foreigner. Please stop using this word incorrectly. The Khmers use language for respect and knowledge. This is a misuse of our Khmer language and degrades our culture. Thank you for the behind the scenes. I’m glad you had the opportunity and hopefully, more positive shows, like Gordon Ramsay’s, will come your way.

You are correct, barang = French but most khmer people refers to foreigners (from the west) as "barang"...it's just a slang term.

@@saviyou The main issue is that foreigners don’t believe us when we say Barang means French and that we are somehow trying to cover up our bigotry when we correct them. I made the edit to correct the Wikipage that had incorrectly defined Barang as a Khmer term meaning “All white foreigners” and to remove its link to a list of countries using derogatory words. This is when I learned that Cambodian wiki pages are not written by Cambodians and that they are distrustful of any Cambodian input. They kept accusing me of being nationalistic and idiotic when I tried correcting misinformation. For the citation, I was surprised to find very few uploaded Cambodian-English Dictionaries with the correct definition. One new editor had to appeal to these non-Cambodian gatekeepers in order to use the formal “pisa bai" because they never heard of it. There are many examples of this. These editors only use travel websites and blogs as their source and misinterpret real sources. That experience was disheartening and I can tell that many Cambodian-Americans tried but have quit Wiki. This is why I try to warn high profile Cambodians to correctly use the word Barang because when we use it incorrectly like them, they are judging us as being a degenerate culture. Thank you for opening this dialogue. I appreciate that your channel is a safe place for Cambodians to discuss our culture. We definitely need it.

Basically it is a very fast process to make pharok. You have some miniature fishes, you clean them, remove the guts. Then clean with water after removing the guts. You rub fine salt all over the fishes then you get small rock salt rub them with it do not wash the salt off with those two process. Put the fishes into a jar and closed the jar tightly with more salt then leave it alone to ferment.

I don’t think he was bullying you. I think because he’s been filming for so long and was once in your position where he used to film by himself just like you are doing now, he is probably giving you some advice. Perhaps he’s watched some of your videos already to get to know a little about you and your content before filming. Everything is a learning experience whether you have a crew or not you should be more open to learning new things whether you already know about whatever it is you’re filming about. Sonny is a professional now and people love to judge someone they don’t know much about. They tend to think serious people are stuck up or whatever. Sonny has probably met so many people in his life time that he is probably trying to keep his heart and mind from getting too attached to so many people. It only makes sense because wouldn’t you feel sad that you couldn’t help someone you met that needed help but you couldn’t do much for them yet you were still honoured to meet them anyway? It can be morally and mentally draining, that’s why he probably doesn’t make too many attachments besides the ones of his crew and his family. You sitting there wishing for a beer is not productive. You should’ve been trying to communicate with the locals on the side and practice your Khmer and learn more about the area you are in. Like any job, there is always something to learn, do and improve upon. You don’t just show up to work and do nothing until the boss gives you orders to do something. Im just speaking in general and not speaking about you or your work ethic. You’re doing great, Savi and getting more exposure, especially with Sonny is a great opportunity to learn, grow and improve! You can only keep going up from here!

I think you misunderstood my assignment, I'm not there to do behind-the-scene, I'm a co-host. My job was to act as the local expert. Sonny wasn't bullying me, just told me to learn about the process during downtime so even though I'm not really an expert, I look like one when we film the interview scenes. Sonny is a pro, he's there to do a job and I took it more as a tip than him bossing me around.

In their defense, it's more of a business now and the show itself is designed to appeal to a larger audience. Sonny has a very specific formula he follows and doesn't deviate from the schedule usually. I watch his show occasionally but I prefer more organic type of content.
