forbes646 Babylon was a nation in the Middle East a few thousand years ago and it took Israel into captivity back then for awhile. It was known by the Israelites and the Old Testament as a godless, sinful nation full of idol-worship, so Stephen was basically jokingly referring to the Hollywood audience as like a modern-day Babylon and calling the award a golden idol.

I love how they are just in complete control of that crowd. Hundreds of professional actors and comedians, totally captivated, and Stewart and Colbert make it look so damn easy. That's the difference between professionals and masters right there.

For those who are, for whatever reason, lacking in the understanding of satire, the reason this REALLY works is that Colbert built up the tension with the right-wing psychobabble you often hear on AM radio concerning Hollywood liberalism. That tension comes crashing down with the fervent statement I LOST TO BARRY MANILOW! THAT'S why this bit works. It reminds you that everyone, even Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity--or, for the sake of political balance, Randy Rhodes and Nike Malloy--are just performers looking for an award to feel validated. This is intelligent satire, and it's unfortunately lost on a few generations of Americans dummied down by the very thing these two are presenting awards for: Reality TV.

Absolutely true, and what sells it is both the writing and their performance. I find Stewart's discomfort after declaiming, "Award show banter is not pablum!" nearly as funny as Colbert's anguish, though the later gets punched up by the shots of people in the audience who are just losing it.

Sometimes I think American humor has gone all to hell - based these days almost always on fat, dressed-down, low-life idiots with their crude schoolboy jokes, and sex and bodily functions. It makes me long for a Nichols and May skit. But then I watch these two guys and I realize that subtlety, elegance, articulate, intelligent satire, literacy, dressed-up dignity, and three-dimensional wit are not only alive and well - but still even widely appreciated. Bless you, Jon and Stephen.

This might sound a bit stupid of me, but I think that their shows are possibly more legitimate than the shows that take shit seriously in some aspects. Their shows have actually made me a little more politically aware. I can't say the same for the other kids at my school. Hahaha. I think one of the funniest moments in Stephen Colbert's Show, was when he discussed the mess up at Fox when they announced the false names of the Asian airlines crash. So, how about you fucking point that shot gun at those bastards of politicans down at Fox, or CNN. Instaed of a kid who has more common sense than you. The only reason I ranted was because I am pissed because my parents are thinking about getting a divorce, and I can only handle so much bullshit at a time. Besides, I understand what you are getting at and I agree with you. I mean, that's what I meant when I said, go shoot the bastards at Fox and CNN. I watch Bill O'Reilly, Wolf Blitzer, and couple of others. Hell, I watched the state of the union meeting. That paper I wrote on gun control laws, I basically said that we needed gun control, but the policies we have now need to be altered. I just took the opinions of both parties and made my own opinion. So I do understand. Besides, when that one guy said someone should shoot me, I got absolutely angry.

Not sure how politically aware you are if you found the asian names to be one of the funniest bits, I find the political bits funny. It's great to be politically aware but you're still young. Be politically aware but there's always someone somewhere who knows more than you. Be careful about making statements about being the most politically aware in your grade, it might be more true to say you consider yourself smarter than everyone in your grade and that is a nasty attitude that nobody wants to be around. There are plenty of politically aware people your age, consider joining groups so you can have some stimulating discussions and have your ideas challenged. I know it seems most kids your age are more concerned with *insert latest trend here* than the state of the world/nation but it's kinda like being gay in a bigoted town, you've just got to trust that there's people like you out there and do your best to find them. So sorry to hear about your parents. When my folks were having troubles I had to buy a punching bag to take out my stress or I'd explode at people. Just an idea
