    "Beginner drone" and " thousand dollars "do not belong in the same sentence, or in the same video. Who's got $1000 to drop if they've never used a drone before and are likely to crash and break it?

    Drone buyers want to know whether the drones qualify for FAA Part 103 flight. What are their weights? Is RID going to be shoved up their pilots noses even though (with the lighter batteries) they weigh less than 250g and do not require FAA registration? The DJI Mini 3 and Mini 3 Pro are examples of RID use when not required by the FAA. This is an important matter!

    That is a good question I never would have thought to ask. I used to fly RC planes 30+years ago and best I remember everything had to have a registration and insurance. Did not think about that at all until, reading comments. I may remember things all wrong , please set me straight if I am off.

    I know a lot of people will swear by lesser-known brands, but I’ve been sent drones from companies in that category for reviews here on the channel and the majority of them are left on the cutting room floor. They’re a waste of time and money. I’m not opposed to people going out of their way to but something other than DJI or Autel, because diversifying the number of brands in the market is a good thing for everyone, but you’ll never catch me recommending something that just plain stinks. I’d rather my viewers not waste their hard-earned money on something that will either fall short of their expectations or leave them just wanting more (in a bad way). Trust me, I have affiliate links from some of these companies, but I’d rather make no money than piss people like you off by pushing you into mediocrity.

I saw that recently there's a lot of buzz around the Hover X1 drone (all reviews seem to be sponsored though). Is this something also worth considering? Almost the same price tag as the DJI Mini 2 SE and seems to be very easy to fly.

    I don’t know anything about the Hover X1, but looking at the price tag ($399) versus the specs listed on the website, I’d encourage you to instead look at the Mini 2 SE. It’ll be more versatile for you and is in the same price range.

    So, the reality of the situation is you COULD but something like that if you wanted an extremely low risk vs. investment. But the fact is a lot of drones marketed as “beginner drones” are marginally less expensive than some of the options listed on this video and underperform substantially in comparison. If you are really hesitant about dropping a ton of cash on a drone to get started, buy the Mini 2 SE. It will deliver an incredibly fun and high-quality experience for the least amount of money. I just think it’s silly people spend $80-100 on drones that are ultimately junk. When, instead, they could take a bit more time saving another $200-300 on top of that and purchase a really high-quality drone and be satisfied with it for a very long time.

    The mini drones on this list will do better with wind than a $70 drone. Still though, they do have their limits. I’ve flown the Nano+ and the Mini 2 in 15-20mph winds with no major issues. Obviously wind is not a consistent condition and especially not at altitude. But largely if you upgrade to one of the drones on this list, you will notice a HUGE difference in performance in windy conditions.

    What do you think about the Mini 2 SE for my 11 year old son? He's wanting one for Christmas. I am concerned he'll crash it. Is that a huge risk, or should I go with a cheaper, popular Amazon drone?

  • @TheDroneGeek

    @TheDroneGeek

    8 ай бұрын

    Crashing is a part of drone flying, so IF he does, be patient with him! He’ll learn. That said, a Mini 2 SE is a GREAT learner drone, but it’s capable of some wild stuff. If you do go that direction, be prepared to monitor him when he flies to make sure he’s being responsible (I’m sure your boy is, but 11 is an age where you just never know…). If you don’t want to commit to that just yet, go with something from Amazon for now. The Mini 2 SE can reach a maximum height of 1,640 feet and a pretty wide range too. I’d be afraid that the temptation to push it would be too great for a young mind and he may get himself into some hot water…

    Different strokes for different folks. Some people can afford a $900 investment, others cannot. Fact remains the Mini 3 Pro is a great entry level drone - despite the price. I could have sat here and fed you a bunch of bullshit about drones from off-brand companies at a fraction of the price, but I’ve been doing this for 7 years now and one thing that remains true in the consumer side of the industry is: you get what you pay for. If the $900 options aren’t for you, there are 3 other options that are a fraction of the cost to choose from.

    @@mikehawk9156 These days almost all drones have at least optical flow and certainly altitude hold. But when you buy something for say $80 you can shut off GPS and get an idea what the wind etc does. Learn REAL flying. And as important get an idea how it's like to fly a drone and if they are going to use it. Because many buy a fancy DJI that ends up in a closet. So ask yourself if it is really worth $1000 to get 5 views on KZread of some trees from above? That's the problem with these so called 'experts'. They think flying drones is everybody's hobby and that the video has to be professional IMAX National Geographic quality. Well I only use a drone once or twice a year for my bike trip. I have better things to waste my money on. What I want is a cheap drone that does the job. I really don't care if the footage is a bit shaky and 720P. In fact my €130 drone blows any DJI out of the sky when it comes to following me on my bike. But of all the drone experts not one understands why DJI's active-track is completely useless in real life. Filming their activities is not their thing. They stand in a field moving their thumbs. That's their hobby.

    Flying drones is an expensive hobby. There are cheaper options out there for sure...but they all fly like pieces of shit or their cameras suck a big one. I'm not going to recommend tech to my viewers and subscribers unless I know it's going to meet and/or exceed expectations. Plenty of other options out there, but it's more likely you're going to waste your money buying $50-100 drones thinking they're good for beginners when, in reality, they are actually just going to cost you more money buying replacements for them over and over again. This industry, right now, is very much a "get what you pay for" industry.

    This industry is expensive. Period. You want a quality, dependable drone that won’t flyaway or break? You’re going to have to spend at least $300 - minimum. I’m not going to peddle garbage drones and call them “beginner” drones just because they’re less expensive. Fact is, you’ll spend more money buying a bunch of drones that don’t work or have absolutely no longevity than you would if you just spent the money up front on a DJI Mini 2 SE. You can go waste your money on a Snaptain E20 if you like, but I’ll never tell you to buy it because it’s a waste.
