Homemade/Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Cable Crossover that attaches to your Home Gym's Power Rack. Provides Tons of exercises! Extremely Versatile! Fun to build! This DIY Cable Pulley System is a Poor Man’s Rogue Monster Cave.
Don't just get pulleys (e.g., SPUD INC PULLEY SYSTEMS) and attach to your rack! If you do this, you will not get a full range of motion for MANY exercises.
Racks are approximately 4 feet wide - and almost everyone's wingspan is well beyond 4 feet. Therefore, please watch this video for A MUCH BETTER WAY to create a DIY Cable Cross over (at a fraction of the cost), and GET A FULL RANGE OF MOTION!
🤦‍♂️TYPO NOTE: There is a typo at 5:46. It says “Two 2 1/6” pieces of 2x4”, but it should say “Two 2 1/16” pieces of 2x4”

    finally stumbled across a crossover setup after all the videos ive watch of the single setup. now the issue is, do i do this setup or does my boujee self just save up for a big fancy machine so i dont have to do the physical work

    My 2 cents: if you have the space, then buy (and be as boujee as you want to be!) If you do not have the space, then DIY. Thank you for supporting the channel!!! 🤘💪🙏

    Hi, Love this content! Does adding the support beam on top prevent the rack from future disassembly? Like, does this apparatus (namely the support beam) add a layer of permanence to the build? Also, would you consider upgrading the pulleys to mountain climbing pulleys (30kn or similar) for lessened friction / noise and to increase the overall durability / longevity to the system? One last thing, would you recommend this project to somebody like me, or would this be way over my head with little to no construction / carpentry etc. experience? Like, I could just buy the Fitness Reality lat-pulldown attachment for ~$220 shipped and be done with it, albeit with inferior parts and not certain about build quality in the years to come, and have that certainly translate to a poor man's cable x-over positioning / ROM with the makeshift attachment to make it the least bit viable. Loaded question(s), guess I can't help myself in the current moment. Also also, I'd be borrowing all tools needed to perform the job from friends and stuff, have no workbenches, etc. or dedicated workstation / space to perform said tasks in. I'm like the opposite of mechanically-inclined. Appreciate everything you're doing! -R

    The unit can be easily removed by unscrewing 1 lag bolt per bracket. That being said, I want to emphasize that the unit can slide to the rear/front of the rack to "get out of the way) also. As far as the pulleys are concerned - of course the higher the quality of the pulleys that you use will increase the enjoyment. I used cheap pulleys to keep costs down - but they are satisfactory for me. As for your last question - I don't think I can answer that for you. Are you ready to join the DIY Community? We would love to have you join us! This is a relatively easy project - so if you wanted to dip your toe in the DIY waters - this would be a great project to start with. Just wanted to say, great vid!! Ive watched many dyi vids on youtube to help me get an idea on how to build a cable crossover system for my power cage and your vid and explanations was far the best!! I really dig how versatile your set up is and how many routines you can do with it. I will be going to home depot in a few days to get what i need. Can i use a 4x4 instead of two 2x4s? Thanks for the vid and tips....well done!! You got my sub!

    Yes FOR the top beam...a 4x4 is actually “better” in that a 4x4 will bow a little less, and will require less work for you. The video’s design utilized 2x4s only because I wanted to keep costs down. A 4x4 was more expensive than two 2x4s, and that was the sole reason I went with two 2x4s. However, for the two brackets, i would still use 2x4. If I the two brackets were made out of 4x4, it would unnecessarily stick out too far. I would likely hit my head on it doing some exercises (e.g, when slid to the rear position and doing standing calf extensions and/or belt squats-as demonstrated at the end of my DIY Belt Squat Belt video). Thanks again!

    "I built this, in a (man)cave, from a box of scraps (I got from Harbor Freight)! I AM IRON MAN! *hammer on anvil PENG! sound in the background*" - A few pointers to people who'd be interested in rebuilding this: You can use static accessory cord (used for climbing, 8 or 9mm will be fine for most applications and will liekly last longer than steel cable too) instead of steel cables. Pro is that you can tie knots in it at any point and adjust your system to whatever you need at that moment. Some of the most high end lat pull down machines use such instead of steel cable. Also, do not cheap out on the rollers. Get some with ball bearings to make sure they run well/true and run SILENT.

    This is great. Have you tried doing lat pull downs across the length of the 2x4 using the outside eyebolts? I’m wondering if it’s stable, I have the same rack just the short version

  • @DesignBuildLift

    @DesignBuildLift

    I have separate a Multi-Functional cable machine which I use for Lat Pulldowns. However, I don’t why you couldn’t’ use the “DIY Cable Crossover” for Lat pull downs also. You would likely just need one longer cable dedicated to Lat Pull downs which has TWO pulleys on it, with one pulley attached to the center eyebolt and the other pulley attached to one of the “exterior” eyebolts. The weight would be attached to the center position for stability. This idea has inspired me to create a DIY new video as a “companion piece” to This video - to convert the Cable Crossover to a Lat Pulldown. Please subscribe to the channel so that you get alerted once the video drops! Thank you!

    How do you stop cables from twisting in a set up like this? I’ve broken two cables so far from the cables untwisting inside their sheathing which causes the cables to lose their strength and snap

  • @DesignBuildLift

    My opinion: you can’t prevent it. The cheap vinyl coated cable that I used will break. The trick is to replace it before it breaks. See 17:12 of this video. When it gets dark gray, it is time to replace it. Cheers! 🤘💪🙏

    In this video, with this setup, you can use cables on sides of the rack as long as you leave enough space on the sides of your rack (don’t place rack too close to wall). 🙏🤘💪

  • @DesignBuildLift

    Great question! FULL Answer found here: diyfitnessclub.com/projects/cable-crossover But here you go anyways: “I was recently asked by a Channel Subscriber if they could use a 4x4 instead of a 2x4. The answer is “Yes” - FOR FOR THE TOP BEAM. For the Top Beam , a 4x4 is actually “better,” in that a 4x4 will bow a little less, and will require less work for you since you will not have to glue and lag-screw two boards together. The video’s design utilized 2x4s only because I wanted to keep costs down. A 4x4 was more expensive than two 2x4s (and 3 lag screws), and that was the sole reason I went with two 2x4s for the Top Beam.
