Best corrosion protectant PART 1: ACF-50 vs XCP vs WD40 vs S-Doc vs FS 365 vs ACS TC and more...

For the full review, click here: bit.ly/rustproofers.
BikeSocial's seven month test of motorcycle corrosion protectants, pitting the leading products against each other in a controlled salt-spray analysis. Muc-Off has asked us to point out that: "Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant is not intended as a stand-alone dedicated corrosion protectant, it is formulated to protect your motorcycle by dispersing any remaining moisture after a thorough clean and removal of other corrosive substrates, the product therefore is not designed for the type of use seen in this test which intends to replicate a motorcycle being ridden through winter. A Muc-Off product far better suited to this application is our Corrosion Defence treatment, which will be launching in August 2018.
"Ultimately no protectant will ever be a replacement for the appropriate level of care and it is only this combined with the correct products that will help you enjoy your motorcycle all year round."
Products on test:
ACF-50
XCP Rust Blocker
Scottoiler FS-365
S-Doc100 Corrosion protectant
TechCote ACS TC200
WD-40
GT85
Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant
Motorex MotoPrep
Valvoline Multispray

Excellent test. Of all the non-laboratory tests on KZread, this is the most comprehensive motorcycle rust product test, and closest to the scientific method that I have seen! Good use of control, reducing artefacts. I do not think blinding the test would make a difference, so excellent test! I continue to use ACF50, but I will give XCP a try should I come across it in the future.

This extremely thorough and comprehensive test was very useful in choosing a rust protection product. In addition to testing for rust protection it was useful to know that certain products are safe on electrics, wiring and rubber O Rings etc. Will be looking forward to more comprehensive product tests in the future. The time taken and attention to detail during the testing period were second to none. Very impressed. Keep up the good work 👏 👍

That was a very comprehensive test and taught us a few things regarding the products, and how we should maintain them after the initial treatment. You need the products to be sticky or they will just get blasted off when you ride through muddy puddles and salty grit. A product that you can clean off very easily will wash off during riding and be no use whatsoever. Just use a bit of elbow grease and your new bike will still look like new again after the winter commute. ACF 50 and FS365 are my favourites, but give a couple of extra coats each time you wash off the mud and salt.

Thanks for this! An old mechanic friend of ours did a test like this in the ‘70’s, he used muffler clamps hung on a chain link fence…he never touched them, never re-applied… He used WD-40, fresh grease(bearing), regular clean motor oil, drain oil from an oil change, and one or two other products I don’t remember anymore…anyways, the winner? Used drain oil by a long shot… His theory was the acids and other compounds in it helped it penetrate the metal better…I’ve used this on many things since, and it really seems to work!(mower decks, and suspension components come to mind)… Maybe include this if you do this again? Best of all, it’s free!☺️

Thanks very much! If I'm putting it on with a compressor, I don't need to wipe much off, but either way yes - I keep a microfibre in a sealed bag for wiping off some excess, but I don't worry about letting it soak more than the five minutes or so it's on there. I can then use the rag for wiping plastics. I do the same with ACF (which leaves black plastics looking great). Most of the bits I'm wiping tend to be painted, so damage not withstanding, they don't need much. I really spray it thick down frame tubes and into the swingarm (where I can), then just leave it. Hope that helps! I'm in the middle of doing this test again, to include some other products, as well as a new XCP 'Clear Cote', which is a lighter version... so far it's looking very impressive. Cheers, John

I don't think it'd cause you a problem, but I guess that a product like ACF-50, which stays more liquid (and is still a good product), might prevent another one from adhering as well, so ideally you'll clean the bike thoroughly first. If you bought ACF-50, don't worry! Just keep using it until you run out, then see what you fancy doing. I'd just use it more frequently than some of the others. Pleas do check out the updated version of this video though. Cheers, John kzread.info/dash/bejne/qXabqJJweZq6gbA.html

Impressive dedication. Could you do a test on already rusted pieces to see which (ACF or XCP) slows down future corrosion more after applying? ACF-50 Is marketed as penetrating under the rust layer and blocking it better, whereas XCP seems to be thicker and stickier so it might not penetrate as deep into an already rusted surface.

I had brand new OEM exhaust pipes and cat converter for my R1 that had gone rusty from several years of storage. I sprayed them all head to toe in ACF50 and left them wrapped up in bubble wrap for a few months. When I came to sell them most of the rust just fell off. Looked brand new. Amazing stuff, however lesson learned: spray before storage.

The ACF50 is meant to stay liquid .. so it can creep on a nano scale to get into those tight spots and microscopic fracture in the paint surface ... it's always spreading until it's physically removed . That's why it's used so much in the aerospace industry ... it gets where you can't see or reach .

XCP, ACF and Scottoiler will be easy to speak to, and will have data sheets that should make it easy to check material compatibility. Top effort! Thank you! To me fs365 is totally pointless as no one has the time to spray their bike after every single ride. I appreciate that that's what they recommend but in my view that recommendation is a bit of a cheat. The whole point of these corrosion protectors should be that they protect one's pride and joy from the elements for a reasonable period of time. 1 ride is not a reasonable period of time in my view.

Muc-Off has asked us to include a reply: "Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant is not intended as a stand-alone dedicated corrosion protectant, it is formulated to protect your motorcycle by dispersing any remaining moisture after a thorough clean and removal of other corrosive substrates, the product therefore is not designed for the type of use seen in this test which intends to replicate a motorcycle being ridden through winter. "Ultimately no protectant will ever be a replacement for the appropriate level of care and it is only this combined with the correct products that will help you enjoy your motorcycle all year round."
