Thanks for the great info. One thing I'd like to second is that using an IR Cut filter helps prevent color-shift with dark colors. Rigging this for tripod shooting makes it much less of bear to work with. The footage is so nice from this device that the BMPCC 4K (in CDNG RAW mode) is the C-cam for wide shots and B-roll to my (2) BMPCC OG's for close-ups.

Nice video. Love the look of the original bmpcc but right now am looking at a fuji xt-30 in comparison. I know the specs don’t exactly compare but wondering if you’ve had experience with it? You may be able to match some of the mojo of the bmpcc in post, and for me, autofocus might be a deciding factor. How do you keep in focus when you shoot yourself?

I love my original BM Pocket Cam! It's especially great as a closeup B cam when I mount an Olympus 45mm 1.8 MFT lens on it. That combination produces a beautifully nice and tight frame. Paired with my URSA 4.6k for wide and mid shots and it's a formidable pair and the 1080p RAW files scale amazingly well to 4k! I prefer not caging it up to keep it really tiny and stealth except for a Sony NPF battery plate that mounts on top. I never fail to shake my head in disbelief at how film-like my scenes look from this camera! Really glad to see it's still getting the attention it deserves! Thanks for this video!

Suggestion: I highly recommend Breakthrough FIlters. I used their CPL filter - it has a 2 step ND layer built in - in a tropical location on a basic Canon photocamera: sharp images, no color distortion/change, slight super pleasant peach hue (you will most likely love it, but if not, simply adjust the white balance), price is around $160. You can see for yourself comparisons of Breakthrough ND and CPL filters to other brands on youtube in a great variety. I recomend review by Matt Granger. See for yourself. Options #1: You can get either regular step-up ring and regular CPL filter, or a magnetic variation of both. The last one is meant for those who want to swap filters without messing up composition of the shot. Option #2: CPL I used, has a built-in 2-step ND layer. The company also has a CPL filter with 4-step ND layer - Dark CPL filter. Since the company is always priogressing and developing new filters, it will most likely have even darker ND layered CPL filters in the future. Enjoy!

AGREED. And I feel like people are blinded by the hype with new gear coming out all the time so I wanted to let a lot of my subs aware they could build something fairly cheep and get an insanely good image from it. Most cameras coming out still can't shoot the look of what this camera produces. Its soooo unique in my opinion. And I love the 4k and with all the upgrades you'll need to get its also a camera that you'll need to upgrade your wallet to get it to work like you need to.

Another great video, Jamie. I think it should be noted that this might be the best cinema camera rig THAT SHOOTS RAW under $1,000. Other setups (GH3, GH4, Sony a6000, etc.) have similar specs (max 1080 FHD resolution, MFT lens mount, etc.) and can produce similar results (although not in RAW). Those camera bodies can be had for around $300-400. You could even go with a Canon 7D (which I had for years) which can be bought for $235 and forego the speedbooster cost, bringing the entire setup down to $600 or so. You could even install Magic Lantern and shoot RAW on the 7D! Again, excellent video - I just wanted to shed light on other possible options for users that may not need to shoot RAW.

Thanks Michael. Changed the title :D Although those may be good alternatives I personally don't think they quite make the cut for an actual "cinema camera." I read they still use these today on big hollywood productions because they match up nicely with the alexa and nothing comes close (dynamic range and 12 bit) But there are so many options price wise that I kind of wanted the viewer to make up their mind on what they may need (also factoring in what they already have.)

Lots of valid arguments for not bothering with a uv filter. There is not a lens in the last 20 years that doesn't have that protection already. So people say that they need them to keep the lens from getting scratched but in reality most uv adapters are really cheap plastic and scratch a hundred times easier than glass from a lens. Sales people love to sell them though. Tony Northrup took a screw driver to a 50mm lens and you couldn't see the scratches in the image.

  • @JamieFenn

    @JamieFenn

Jim Robinson the B+W is awesome and hasn’t scratched. I also only mount it between my lens and my ND. Also, most cameras don’t need it in todays modern cameras. But the BMPCC lacks in that department. There’s plenty of tests online that show this camera needs it. But only when you start cranking the ND and lowering the aperture.

However the crop is kind of killing it for me and i kind of do not want to get a new stack of lenses just to make up for that.. suggestions? still a speedbooster? maybe not doing it AT ALL?

You could get away with a speed booster or another adapter. Or just go native but if you go native you won't be able to go that wide. I went with the metabones speedbooster and a tokina 11-16 and thats my go-to wide angle. But I usually have the 24-105 thats stabilized on it when Im running and gunning with no gimbal.

As for "cinema" camera, original Pocket is therefore better, because it is very close to the Arri Alexa thanks to DualGain technology. Arri Alexa also has DualGain technology and this should not be confused with DualISO. What I want to say is, that the original BMPCC allows for more cinematic looks. It's a real "cinema" camera, a little Arri Alexa. Yes, the sensor plays a crucial role, because through DualGain and the pixelsize, the light is better captured, it has a nicer and better DynamicRange...it's not too digital. Skin tones, highlights look better. The original BMPCC is not a lowlight camera (it doesn't have to be). But as soon as the scene is illuminated, it looks phenomenal. CDNG is also a better RAW than BRAW (Better a good, a qualitative 1080p, instead of a bad 4K.). In my opinion BMD didn't bring any improvement with the BMPCC4K (I don't need a bigger screen, better internal microphone, because I use all that externally). It doesn't matter. Important is a good sensor, good RAW). I tested BMPCC4K and brought it back. Even if it's cheap, I don't like it. When Blackmagic Design releases a new Pocket with Fairchild sensor, I buy. If not, then I stay with the original BMPCC. And I think that I am not alone with my conviction and disappointment regarding the BMPCC4K.

You can get a superb vari-ND for 120$, the Simmod variable. That polar Pro is way overpriced

The BMPCC is great, but for me the battery issue and the fact that the image can easily look shaky and bad when shooting handheld (a good stabilising lens can coutneract this, I know, but with IS designed for still photo you can get these really weird artifacts) forced me to sell mine. I still haven't found an image I love as much as the BMPCC, it's the best I've seen for that prize and even well above the price range. If I find a good rig solution I might get one again, but as I shoot gerilla handheld style without any fussing around with rigs, it's still too finicky for me.

Totally understandable. It’s not for everyone and I totally understand. I miss the image too (have the Sony A7siii) now because I’m more of a hybrid nomad guy now.

Great video. Sorry to be picky, but I'd want to be told if I use a term the wrong way. One doesn't "highly suggest". It's "strongly suggest". But better still is "highly recommend".

I really wish Blackmagic would have called their pocket 4k the Cinema 4k. That would have left them room to make a smaller camera to keep in the 'pocket' class. I need a small gimble camera that I can carry all day, and once the pocket 4k is built up it needs a hefty gimble. I've looked at the original pocket camera as a light gimble cam, but I would need low light and I'm already addicted to Blackmagic Raw, so the pocket is not the camera for me. Hopefully, the next Blackmagic camera is similar in size/form factor to the Micro Cinema Camera and can fit on a Ronin SC or Moza Aircross 2.

TOTALLY AGREE. Its certainly NOT a pocket sized camera... but there was so much hype behind the first one for the size and capabilities that I think they just wanted to ride their own cameras coat tails. If you get some nice primes (like the slrmagic hyperprimes that are something like .95) you should be able to get decent results. If you check out that movie Cosmos that I was talking about in my video the whole movie is shot at night time. Feel free to check it out!

I watched your video , all is cool you recommended but except on the camera with cage for $525... i am just reading the same post after months you did this video.. the same camera, same price somebody obviously trying to sell so cheap BUT... hdmi port is broken there... to fix, i doubt that this camera will be worthed to by for this cheap and put big $ to fix it...maybe you did not noticed this or before somebody tried to hide this and got the return from the buyer...I bought old BMPCC for $750 used which comes with original Metabone and the same canon lens and brand new monitor and external battery pack... so i got unbelievable deal!
