Best Canon Lenses: TOP 5 Photography Lenses (Real-world Experience)

What IS the best photography lens? The best portrait lens and best wedding lens might yield different results and opinions.
✨✨Are you on the INSIDE? Check out thephotoinsiders.com - EXCLUSIVE video content and learning community for photographers✨✨
Here are my best photography lenses for best wedding photography lenses and best portrait lenses and omgosh I hate SEO because who talks like this anyway!?!?!?
Obviously, these are my best Canon Lenses for mirrorless and DSLR cameras, but there are similar equivalents with other brands. I love using these lenses because they work nicely in my workflow for real jobs, and they look pretty too... the photos that come out of them, not the lens itself. When the Canon R3 comes out I think I'll just start saying the camera itself is pretty because oh my goodness have you seen the body texture on that thing? Anyway, I digress. Enjoy these top photography lenses. :-)
Here's a video for the Best Canon Lenses: My TOP 5 Photography Lenses based on Real-world Experience. Let me know your TOP gears too.

    50mm all day for me. Used to be 35 until I realized I was cropping most of the 35mm shots anyway. I’ll add a 28 if I bring another lens or on a 2nd camera. I prefer the cohesive look from just using a 50 though. The lack of perspective distortion keeps things looking natural.

  • @Joe-hm1zk

    That cropping is actually why I enjoy the 35mm. The amount of crop to get it to a 50mm isn't really all that much and if I want to keep it wider I can.

    Great video. After a recent shoot I made a chart that covers how much every lens in my bag weighs. The weight of the kit is a factor. I have found that 15 pounds is about as much as I want to carry for a full day of running and gunning. If I have a crew in the budget or a location where I can set up the strobes and stay put, I'm happy to bring more. I hear you on the 135 f2.0. Sounds great. I do own the 100 mm f2.8 so it's hard to justify the 135. Also I quite like my 70-200 f2.8 as it is a hard working lens. I enjoy your videos because you provide the viewer with real world, practical notes. Have a great New Year.

    I have the RF 85mm F2 and really like it. I'd love to get a 135mm F2, but at this point, I may wait for an RF version. I really like the 50mm focal length, but don't want to spring the cash for the RF 50mm 1.2. I'm stuck deciding to get an EF, or wait until I can get the RF 50mm 1.2. I currently have the RF 50mm 1.8 and really like it for shooting around more casual. I don't have confidence at a wedding or client shoot though.

    I would so LOVE the EF 50mm f/1.2L but just can't justify the $$$ as compared to the f/1.4 non L. It's interesting to me that there seems to be 50/50 if pros like L version--some say it's not worth the money, others gush over it. Even on the used market, it sure holds its value, so it must be pretty good. I keep thinking it will eventually get lower in price--would love to give it a try.

  • @bbasiaga
    @bbasiaga2 жыл бұрын

    I wonder if there will be an RF offering between the RF 50mm 1.8 and RF50mm 1.2? They used to have a 1.4....and I would like to have something similar as a compromise on price and IQ vs the 1.2.

    I don't think that I have five favorite portrait lenses. But my present favorite portrait lens is the Voigtlander 58mm f1.4 Nokton, sometimes with a pro-mist filter for a dreamy effect. I'm presently shooting with a Nikon Z5, and this is the best combination I've ever tried. Love it, both the way the lens renders and the colors of the Nikon sensor. When I shot with Canon I loved the 24-70mm f2.8 L zoom lens, basically used it for everything. With the Fujifilm X-T3 I used the 18-55mm f2.8-4 "kit" lens. Did the job for most things really.

The EF ones I'd have to adapt, the RF ones I can't use :/ I'm on the EF-M train enjoying the compactness and light weight even if the zooms aren't as fast as the lenses you're showing. The primes are great though including the 28mm stabilised macro that I bought recently.

    @@VanessaJoy Thank you for the inspiration. I aspire to be this good one day. Seeing pictures like this just make me want to pour more money into more L lenses and go out shooting and learning everything I can before meeting a nice couple who will let me photograph and be part of their special day. I'm new to your channel and will definitely binge watching your content. I like your 50mm does everything approach. Many photographers seem to have forgotten this gem. Perhaps it's out of fashion these days among the men, as I only see women use them. Perhaps the weight of something like the 70-200 is off-putting. I certainly struggle myself with the f2.8 beast which I got recently and see why the EF version stays in your bag.

    I've owned the 135 mm for ages but didn't use it a lot because of the lack of image stabilisation. I always had to use it at 1/320 sec or shorter because of shaky hands ... I even wanted to sell it. Now that I have the R6 with IBIS, this is no longer an issue and I don't need to sell it :-). At weddings I only use the 35 and 85 mm (and the 100 mm macro for details). The 70-200 is too heavy to carry all day. I used to own a 24-70 mm f2.8 but it broke down. Before, that was my favourite wedding lens.

    For what seemed like the longest time all I had was a 50mm prime and you can do so much with it, so maybe that would have been my, if I can only have one, lens, but I prefer the 85mm [f1.4 IS] more, and I love the 135mm f2, I guess for practicality the 28-70mm is a great all-rounder, I could certainly live without the extra 4mm and you have three primes in one, almost four! If like me, you also shoot long lens stuff, it gets more complicated, lens choice is so tricky, you could easily throw £/$15K at lenses, sometimes lens selection is a nightmare! lol. I think this would be my wishlist... RF 15-35, RF 28-70, EF 85, RF100 macro, EF135, and RF100-500, and the two EF lenses with their own adaptor, I could probably live without the much-coveted 70-200. Wouldnt it be great if you could have bottomless pockets, a packhorse, and all primes! lol

    For versatility I would go with the 35. But even though it's not as versatile, if I had to go with 1 lens, I would pick a lens that produced wow photos. And thst for me is the 85. 1.2, 1.4, 1.8, whatever. It was the first lens where people looked at my photos and were wow. Photos that can't be replicated by a phone or cheap camera. 50 mm to me was just bland. Not wide enough for when you need wide, not special enough in portraits. Vanessa and others can make 50 sing. I never really could. The 135 is fantastic but you have to be so far away from the subject.

    I'm guessing you shoot full frame. I think it would have been more helpful, to place more emphasis on the relative differences in using full frame lenses on cropped sensor camera, which as I'm sure you're aware will result in longer effective focal lenses, on all the lenses you've mentioned. Alternatively, change the title of the video to "Top 5 lenses for Full Frame cameras".

    I remember Susan Stripling once said she doesn't even own a 50 and I was dumb enough to think I didn't need one. My favorite is a 85mm though.

  • @diotough
    @diotough3 жыл бұрын

    Funny enough, I find the 50mm boring af - it's not really tight and not really wide. Since you're note out with just one lens, a 35mm and an 85mm lens are imho the better pick. And if I were only to take one then it's the 35mm. Perfect for candid shots, wide enough for smaller groups (and larger if you have the space to back up) and without too much distortion so you can still get closer for a portrait. Personally I prefer to have the 24-70 f/2.8 or f/2.0 (or an equivalent lens for the specific system) as the general tool and backup lens that also covers the 50mm range. Fully agree on the 135mm lens - perfect addition. You basically only use longer lenses for the ceremony to get more reach. Obviously, lenses are a matter of taste and at the end of the day whatever gets you the shots that make you and your clients happy are the right lenses and nobody except for photographers will care about your gear - as long as it's not a LEGO camera.

And I can confirm that the Canon EF 135mm lens combined with a Fujifilm camera is the finest thing since sliced bread. In my honest opinion, the marriage of Canon glass and Fujifilm bodies is extraordinary.

EF 50mm f/1.8. Used for flowers, insects and rain both during day and at night. 2. EF 28-135mm kit lens. Used for lifestyle and street photography. 3. EF 17-40mm f/4L. Used for landscape images. 4. EF 400mm f/5.6L. Used for wildlife photography. 5. EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II + 2x extender. Used for bird photography. Use tripod when necessary. All these native lenses are great performers. I'm confused. First you said if you could only have one lens on a wedding day you'd take the 50mm. Then you said you don't shoot wider than f/2 anyway. In that case, why take a 50 prime over the 28-70 if you could only have one lens?

    @@VanessaJoy Fair enough. So has your opinion changed or would you still take the 50 over the 28-70 if you could only have one? I'm on the verge of jumping into Canon mirrorless coming from Nikon DSLRs, and while two R6s and a 70-200 are a given, I'm debating between the 50 1.2 vs the 28-70 as the "star of the show" if you will. I mean, I know such decisions ultimately depend on each individual shooter and their style, but what can I say? I'm a bit of a gearhead and like exchanging opions about these things. For me it's a little hard to fathom that a zoom might actually be able to adequately replace a bag of primes.

I'd love a prime in the 105 range or 135mm.. either would be very useful. I have mostly zoom lenses because I wanted to make sure I covered my bases.. but I'm really really wanting some more solid primes. I feel more of the Wow factor when I shoot with primes.

    Great video with a lot of valid points. Just one error: You should stop referring to compression as all lenses has exactly the same "compression". It is a myth and you can find a lot about it here on YT. To compare the "compression", shoot all lenses from the same place and crop the wide shots to match the tele. You "compress" with your feet 😉

    About holding your breath and "stop your heart from beating." holding your breath actually causes your pulse to quicken. When you're not putting O2 into your blood, your circulatory system increases. All you're doing there is stopping movement from breathing. Your best bet is to breath calmly and to shoot in between breaths where there is a natural pause. All marksmen know this ;)

    I loved my 50mm on my Pentax, but haven’t actually had one since moving to Canon! It’s been on my wish list for a long time... I have the RF 70-200 2.8, EF 135 f2 (I always used the 135 over a 70-200 on my 5d4, however on the R5 the RF 70-200 gets more use) ... I have the 28-70 f2 as well! This is the lens that spends the most time on my camera! ( I have been using 2x R5s, and usually I keep the 28-70 on one, the 85 1.2 DS on the other, and if I need something else generally the 85 gets switched out :) :) ... I don’t have the 85 2, but I do have the 85 1.2 DS .... SO... 4/5 of the lenses aren’t bad!
