I've played around with a lot of types. My buddies and I played a lot of paint ball back in the day and used a lot of different types of camo as well. Phantomleaf is my favorite for central Alabama. Multi-Tropic is great too. But what I found is that even flat FDE and ODG are great at breaking up shapes. I appreciate the autism related to camo discussions, I eat it up, but camo patterns stop mattering if you're moving. As long as your colors generally blend in, you won't have too dissimilar results. If you're not moving, get a Ghillie. That's how you actually blend in and disappear. Otherwise, just get what you like or what your team uses (for PID)

I have found it depends on the time of year and the region I am in, here in Alaska. In the summer, in the more temperate regions such as South Central, the Southern Coast, or the Southern Peninsula, M-81 Woodland or Viet Nam era Tiger Stripe works well since we are pretty well covered up in Birch, Spruce, and Alder. On the Tundra, something with a splotchy green/brown/tan (like the Mossy Oak styles). In the fall, pretty much everywhere, the same Mossy Oak styles works. But as the fall progresses (which happens rapidly here) an old set of faded, rust brown Carharts with blotches of red/yellow/and orange paint and you will literally disappear. Pretty much anything to break up your silhouette and there is (generally) enough foliage to conceal even fairly large movements, as long as you don't move to quickly. The biggest thing to ensure you won't spook game or give yourself away is to cover your face and hands. Use a sniper's veil and gloves along with any mixture of clothing that generally isn't too bright and colorful. This has worked well for me for many decades hunting here. I've even had hunting partners that knew I was around somewhere, standing just a few feet away, but they had no idea I was there until I say something like, "Hey, yer in my line of fire. Ya wanna move to the left or right so'as I can shoot?" Usually gets there attention. 😁

Definitely region-dependent variable needs. M81/ OG Woodland, DPM, and patterns like Flecktarn work better/ best in my AO. Only problem with something like Flecktarn is the color palette isn't great, needs variation change, which is one reason why I am developing a better version of Fractal/ Fleck style patterns with color palettes that work more effectively apart from an improved pattern layering and variation. Also something to be said about DIY pattern making, lot of effective implementation and consideration with that too if someone understands their local environment, seasons, and how to do effective palette layering and design nuance effect.

I'm in North Texas in a suburban area, but plenty of stretches of green for now. Camo changes with the weather. Here you can get away with something heavy green like M81 Woodland or Russian EMR (if you like that, from March to about mid July. Then you need more yellows and browns, like the Six Color Desert pattern. Maybe still some green from Aug to mid Dec. Then winter, just different shades of brown. Lol

South Florida is a real mix with city street, suburban vegetation, native vegetation, white sugar sand, and rich black soil. If I had to chose one Jack of all trades camo, Multitarn may have to be it. Flecktarn, Multicam Tropic, and Multicam can be perfect in select areas, so Multitarn seems the best compromise even if it doesn't excel for most areas.

After years of doing my own testing in the dense vegetation of Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, I concluded I need two patterns actually. May through September it's all Ranger Green. October through April it's all Coyote Brown. Depending on the exact ground I'm on I would mix the patterns of top and bottom. Accessory pieces I just do either of those colors, or substitute OD green or tan (but not light tan). This works quite well and nothing beats just knowing how to move in the woods.

I also live in the southeast and I agree to an extent. Yes multicam tropic is best in spring and summer but if it’s an area with taller trees then there will be a good environment for multicam year round. Most of the greens are not at ground level or six foot above. Even though I am 50 I play airsoft with my 10 and 12 year old boys and I find multicam to work great. I am also of course a concerned and well prepared citizen. I have been strongly considering the tropical top for summer. Also before anyone makes fun of airsoft I promise you it’s one of the best ways to work the bugs out of your gear. Yes you can patrol and do other things but in airsoft you are accessing your kit and constantly changing mags. I have not found a better way to shake out your gear and equipment.

Multicam literally is a compromise which means it’s okay in every environment but the beauty of it is they have desert and jungle which also go very well with each other when mixed, so if you exclusively operate in one terrain that doesn’t vary, they got you covered with a blend that will work with your existing nylon battle rattle that might be standard multicam or another blend.

Rhodesian Brushstroke, British Woodland DPM, Pencott Wildwood, Swedish M90. My favorite is Concamo Green or Brown but hard to get anymore. Germans stopped making it.

I totally agree with you, another great contender and possibly less expensive is the Greek lizard camo - surprisingly you can find it easy compared to the tropic multi.

I kinda like it tbh. I was issued the M81 salad suit and it was good camouflage at the time. This new blouse has some nice new features as well. Thanks for sharing.

Good to see a video on the Kurtz shirt. I have two of them. Great field shirts. One thing I do wish they had that the Crye G3 tops have is a hand pocket behind the chest pockets. Definitely not a deal breaker but those chest pockets are…”handy” when standing around. 😂 The built in tie down loops are great features as well. You said you aren’t sure why they have the velcro and button on the pockets. I’d say the button provides additional security for the closure and when the velcro wears out, the button is there to close the pocket. My guess at least.

Aor2 would work in the bright foliage there. Marpat or flektarn are good as well. I have a massive camo collection and rock about 4 patterns depending on the area and time of year. Mc tropic is definitely one of my favorites though. Atacs fg is a favorite of mine relative to the time of year. Also a lighter bright pattern.

I personally like multicam it works great all season in my East Tennessee terrain.multicam tropic works best in spring and summer but I don’t want to spend the extra money to build out another kit for spring and summer.maybe one day but that day definitely won’t be today..the classic M81 will forever be a great camo as well

A-Tacs FG here is best. OCP 2nd. Marpat 3rd. I generally run a mix of those in uniform when teaching tactical tracking. 10-15 meters. Invisible with proper tactics.

It's an interesting piece of gear and well thought out. Dummy cording already built in is a win-win, daytime or night time. I am surprised at the gear I pick up off the gounds when traversing paths or camping spots here in my state. Compasses, lighters, a cell phone once, and even an inhaler some poor soul left behind full. Here in New Mexico it is usually regarded as a desert, but anywhere you spend hunting or extended camping is usually in the highlands that are pretty green. I despise tiger stripes, but I do like dark digital or kryptek. Oh, and don't judge these poor souls that have 20 morale patches on their extra-medium rothco multicam/airsoft approved kits in mom's basement. We don't want to break out the snivel kit and ibuprofen too early! Rub some dirt on it and stay stoked!
