    2) when i shoot at night, I put the minimum shutter speed that I can shoot with my hands, usually wide open my lens, and let auto ISO do the rest again!

I appreciate that you’re not gatekeeping the definition of good photography or skill by the operating mode or settings. In camera, I prioritize composition and use the exposure mode(s) that get me what I want in the time I have. Enjoying the experience is important to me, so when “M” starts to mean “missed” or “joylessly obsess”, I go to Auto for a bit just to get over myself.

Thank you Matti. I watched several other videos presented by professional photographers concentrating on the P mode. It seems fairly consistent that they like this particular mode. One even used the term “P for perfect.” Another theme I’ve picked up on is many of them, like yourself, are not bothered by a little “noise.” I personally find that refreshing in that there are so many other things to consider when looking at a truly wonderful photo that a small bit of “noise” can become incidental to other artistic aspects. Love your presentations!

This is an impressive video, a very practical and concise course in modern camera operation directed at street photography. It makes taking the picture a priority over messing with the camera. This even applies to using MF lenses on modern mirrorless cameras, add zone focusing and pick your camera setting. Follow this up with practical composition practices for street photography and you have a summary overview for newbies or a rethink for the rest of us.

Personally I like the M mode for the situation that I want both to control my depth of field and my shutter speed. Use that with auto ISO and you have the power in your hands. And let me explain with an example: 1) shooting street with my Panasonic GX80 i choose M mode. f/5.6 or f/4.0 so as to have good depth of field, and 1/250 or 1/320 depending on the light conditions. So, I have always both my ideal dof and freezing people and moving things. And I letting auto ISO do the rest, I'm more focused on shooting and framing!

@@mattisulanto of course the P mode is a great choice when you want the camera to do all these things for you, and just focus only on framing and shooting. I think that the choice of the mode depends also on the camera you use. My camera lens has an F ring and a shutter speed dial too. And that makes things very easy on M mode. But in a camera with not so many buttons, the P mode can be the great choice! Thanks for the video, all things mentioned and explained in a great and simple way, and are great & helpful info and tips for everyone!

I found 1/400 is the slowest SS for me while walking with my dogs. I have programmed 3 custom modes on my camera for common scenarios so I don't need to set everything every time manually.

Yes, I switched back to using 'P' mode a while ago. The camera really does do a good job most of the time selecting the settings, freeing your brain up for composition, etc. Those who kept pushing 'A' mode (or ghast 'M' mode!) did everyone a big disservice. I'm even starting to use the fully automatic green mode sometimes! Especially if I'm shooting RAW+JPEG.

Thanks Matti for this very helpful video. I've recently watched several videos and read blogs on street photography settings. Most recommended F8 without mentioning the variance between different sensor sizes in terms of depth of field. A friend alerted me to the depth of field calculator. I found out my 35 mm ASPC lens at F8 is the same as F12 on full frame. I then found a KZreadr shooting ASPC recommending F4 which is F6 equivalent on full-frame with my lens. I've tried both F8 and F4 and was quite surprised how much was in focus with F4. I am going to play around with F4, F5.6, F8 and see which I like best. I also appreciated your comment about shutter speeds at night that were low enough to give motion blur. I am sure you get some very creative results. Normally I put my camera away when shooting people if I can't get say 1/125.

Great video. When I was volunteering as an event photographer and doing street photography I normally used aperture priority and program mode. With the photography I'm doing now I'm using manual mode more and shutter priority. I'm trying to get used to using aperture priority and setting the ISO to get the shutter speed for my wildlife photography.

Expensive bodies aimed at professionals have the P mode. Why? Because the P mode can be useful for any photographer. As you suggest, the more you leave to the camera the more you can concentrate on composition that your camera can not do. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

Hi Matti, I'm with you on Preferring P mode for much of my photography, mostly I don't want to worry about the settings, I want to get the shot. Controlling shutter speed with the iso setting is a great tip, I'll give that a go net time I'm out on the street.

P mode with Auto ISO is my favorite. The only cumbersome part is changing the min SS in auto ISO mode, I wish cameras had a separate dial for that. It's easier with Sony as you can program a button for that, but with Canon/Nikon you can't, they force you to dive into menu.

  • @blindsouris

I use M mode for street photography for the simple reason that the A7II has not a "min shutter speed" option, a shame... Never try the P mode, a good idea for my next strolling.

Matti, your approach to using the Ricoh has been most helpful for us. However when I use Shutter priority in low light I find the pictures are very grainy looking. I'm getting much better quality images with AV and even P mode at night than TV mode. Do you cap the shutter speed and iso limits when using Shutter priority?

  • @mattisulanto

    @mattisulanto

    10 ай бұрын

In shutter priority you choose the appropriate shutter speed for the situation and the camera will take care of the rest. If you get a lot of noise in your photos, your ISO is too high. Select a longer shutter speed and the ISO will come down.

My current favorite setting with my Olympus M1Mkiii is manual. However, I have my ISO set to Auto with an upper limit of 6400. I chose that limit because my camera has very little noise up to that point. I then have my front and back camera dials set to control shutter speed and aperture. With this setup I can quickly set my preferred shutter speed and aperture. The auto ISO assures that my image will be properly exposed. And I can still use exposure control if I so desire.

For years I used Aperture Priority (Minolta manual focus film history) and then with Auto ISO on digital (until the Sony A7 biases too slow a shutter speed). Then switching between modes frequently confuses the human even more. Someone recently advised One Camera, One Lens for simplicity (😉) so same with exposure modes.....

4 years on, I still don't quite get the P mode. I switch between aperture or shutter priority. I use manual sometimes when I know I have time to dial in settings. Having the camera decide both depth of field and motion blur for me feels a bit strange. I prefer to have full control of at least one of these elements.
