It’s so nice. When I was 17 I had a 100w tone blaster half stack that was $600. Used simply as a pedal platform. My first pedals costs me hundreds. If I broke a lead, new cables were $30 In January I decided to revamp my gear and play more. $600 for a full pedal board including power and a $400 catalyst 2x12. Plus a Monoprice 15 watt $251. Plus a peavey xxl head for $100 at a pawn. Nobody could dream of my rig for less than $4k in 2002.

The transformer you wondered "what was going with" is a Toroidal transformer. I used one in an amplifier kit I assembled years ago and this is the first time I have seen one since !! You would need to look up the full tech specs but they are better than the more trad type in a number of ways.

The amp is basically the guts of a Laney VC30 in head format. Just as the SR combos are reworked Laney models. Thomann are now selling them under their Harley Benton brand. When/if this hits Harley Benton land, it'll be a struggle not to get spendy on one.

The output transformer (the round thing) is a toroidal transformer. Although not traditionally used in guitar amplifiers, they are used in many other audio amplifiers, because they are lighter and smaller, are 90% to 95% efficient, are almost hum free, have 1/10 the magnetic field of regular transformers needing no insulation. However a torodial transformer is more expensive than the tipical laminated power transformers we normally see. That said because they are quieter you can do away with filters and insulation, and engineering placement problems that are a factor in some amps. The one downside is that for high gain junkies, torodial transformers have much different saturation qualities than laminated types, so for a low gain amplifier this isnt much of a problem. Darrell didn't try any overdrive/ distortion pedals with the amp so we'll have to wait and see. I noticed the input transformer was quite small on the StageRight, which is usually fairly close in size to the output transformer in most builds. This is only a 30watt amplifier, so maybe it's not as big a deal, but my Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister Deluxe 40watt uses the same quartet of EL84's and three 12AX7b's as the StageRight, but the input transformer is nearly twice the size as the StageRight. I realize the H&K is more expensive, but a lot of that money is soaked up in features an aesthetics, in fact the tubes in the StageRight are marginally better than the Chinese no name tubes in the H&K. I would have liked to see inside the amplifier itself, to see the layout and components of the StageRight. My belief if that your looking at a very slightly modified Fender clone of sorts.

So what your saying is this amp head has quality and has a fender like sound to it. Does that mean it would take pedals really well?

  • @shovington67

    @shovington67

    4 жыл бұрын

@@powellwayne8107, I'm fairly sure it will take most effects pedals well, my only concern is overdrive and distortion type pedals. Because of the saturation nature of toroidal output transformers matched with EL84 output tube ( made famous for their use in the VOX AC30 amplifier) it may not sound typical to a high gain amp which are usually endowed with EL34/6L6/KT88 type tubes and a laminated transformer. So for Jazz, Country, Rock, Pop, Funk I'm sure it's great for the price.

Kind of an average price point leaning towards low end for a 30watt tube amp. I would be more inclined to drop the 250 for the 15 watt than the 600 for this. If they could have dropped it into the 500 range they would have a winner but I can’t see spending more than that for this set up I would spend the extra going up from 600 for a more premium amp but for me the price just falls in between the cracks of a good practice or studio combo and a stage ready head and can for bigger rooms. I say this every time but I appreciate your thorough and honest reviews. Obviously most of us cannot go get different gear and test it out and tear it down. When we buy we either return right away or it’s ours good bad or other. Your channel has been extremely helpful to me as I am just returning to playing after a decade break and need to replace all the gear I had sold. Thanks

I don’t know what you can get for that kind of money that is comparable, but it sounds great to me. I have the SR 15 watt combo, and can’t say anything that bad about it, although I do run it through an extension cab I’ve had for many years. It takes pedals well, and has great tone, especially for the $200 US I paid for it. Sounds wicked pissah with a distortion pedal.

Darrell, I wonder how it compares to say a sawtooth valve amp? I had the opportunity to check one out not too long ago and I have to say that it was indeed impressive for a 20-watt unit. I understand a 10-watt difference but that sometimes can be deceiving because depending on how an amplifier is wired 20 watts can get extremely loud and remain clear where a 30-40 watt unit breaks up and struggles. I would be interested in seeing you do a review of the Sawtooth 20w head and 1x12 cabinet set up. Then do a side by side because the cab is built using 9-ply birch but runs an RCF single 12" 8-ohm speaker which costs 189 USD. The head uses 2 6v6 output valves and 2 12AX7 preamp valves that comes in at about 389 USD price-wise. If you purchase them as a paired unit they run 579 USD with free shipping from Amazon. That is a very similar package and pricing. For 658 USD you can purchase the 20w head with a 2x12 speaker cab as a package deal with free shipping through Amazon. To be fair the SR has bright, reverb, and presence controls which the Sawtooth does not. The SR 30 also has a high and low input which the sawtooth does not. The sawtooth is about as bare-bones as they come but it does offer 4, 8, 16-ohm switchability for different speaker cabinet configurations and has two output jacks. I for one do not care about onboard extras but more about the natural tone of the amp and speaker configuration. That is what they make pedalboards for ;)

This seems like a really nice sounding amp. Nice sparkling clean tone with the brightness on, enough gain for your classic rock riffs on the overdrive channel and a decent speaker. Not a metal amp per se, but if you want more gain, that is what a distortion pedal is for.

Looked at that....ended up with a Fender SuperChamp Tube Head and 1/12 cab. Both for under $1000 Can. Way awesome tone

I hope they come out with a 2 x 12 option for the cabinet. How would this amp sound with a OD or distortion pedal? Possible to get good sounding gain out of it? Thanks for the review. I could see how it can serve well with my Helix or POD.

Monoprice's idea here was basically a 2203-2204 circuit with switchable clean channel, unlike the jcm 800 where you don't have switching capabilities.

Looks great, sounds great. Agree with you for the mirrored plates. I love that more and more accessible products for beginners show up on the market, however, with no IR out and power soak, it is absolutely useless to me considering my H&K amp set on 1 watt with volumes set at noon is WAY too loud for my appartment. At 200$, that cab is not to be overlooked. Great video as always

A fan said this amp is a clone of the Laney Vintage 30 amp as the circuit board is a exact copy of the Laney ! I have the Laney VC-30 and that toneful amp is at its best with the volume at 7-8 where the power tubes breakup beautifully and this SR amp sounds just like it ! I am waiting for FedX to bring my SR 15 watt amp combo , i love lower wattage amps at home !

The bright and channel switches look full size instead of minis which I like. Never thought mini switches belonged on a front panel. Unbranded tubes don't bug me. I hold them next to a name brand tube - so often they're the same tube. Would have liked to see the guts. Actually I think 30 is the perfect club amp wattage.

Had no idea they are making these. I've been thinking of buying the Marshall on the SV20H. But for for less than half I can get this. He'll I could get a whole stack. I've got the 15 and swapped tubes and speaker so I like it and play it.

@Darrell Braun Guitar hey love your channel. Have you ever considered doing an complete amp mod video? I know you put nicer tubes in a Stage Right 15w amp. I'm wondering...what about swapping out caps, really nice NOS tubes, say a Celestion Alnico Blue speaker, high end speaker cable, etc. Really do it up. Then take an off the shelf amp for around the same money you spent, and do a deep comparison. I think that would be super interesting to me. I currently play through a Hot Rod DeVille, but it has yellow jacket tube converters running NOS Mullard EL84's, all NOS preamp tubes, and I ditched the 2x12 in favor of a single Alnico Blue 12". I must say I can get some spectacular tones from this setup! Plus, it is unique and all me. Anyway, I think there are a lot of people out there that love the idea of spending less on the main product, but putting their own twist on it and investing a bit to make something unique and potentially really high quality. Food for thought! Keep doing what you are doing! One of my very favorite youtube channels!!

I like the amp but I was kinda hoping it had more gain on tap. The cabinet might be a good option to keep the overall price down on a higher gain head/ cabinet set up. It's still a good set up and price for its type.
