@Squidmar Miniatures I went with your advice some months ago and got a Raphael size 2 to try it out. I quickly fell in love and ended up using it for painting even such details as eyes on 25mm minis because its tip is still better than any tiny brush I had. So my question is now, how do your brushes compare to the Raphael 8404 series?

@@soup8786 Depends on what you want to paint with them. What Emil showed in this video is a good selection, I would recommend starting with size 2 and going up or down as far as you need. Definitely don't start with the smallest ones as you get less of the benefits mentioned in the video the smaller you go.

I would love your brushes, but need something now. I assume you will have an online store once you finish production on your brushes. So I will buy them then. Raphael 8404 Is $25-30 in the US right now, so will go with the $15 Windsor, what size do you recommend? The miniature series is more expensive, is it worth it? Or should I just get a regular 0 & 1?

For some reason, you've reviewed the 3 different "miniature brush" brands in the order I bought them since I started painting again. Starting with the rosemary, then winsor and newton, and the last ones were Raphael. I've been getting better as I was using them, so definitely I saw an improvement in the brushes, but I wasn't sure it was my own painting skills improving, or the brushes. So I started using "old" brushes, and I totally agree with your review. I rate them in the same order, and now that I understand more, I also noticed the same thing you say about the paint drying faster in the rosemary brushes. Now one thing that I didn't really know is that the pigment in metallic paints make your brushes break faster, so I'll be more careful with that from now on. Thanks a lot for all the tips! I've ordered the Zhu Ting brushes and hopefully I'll be testing them soon :)

My favourite brushes are the one that malt huge chunks of bristles just for gentle use. I really enjoy it. I swear.

Most difficult thing for me in regards to brushes was learning to give up my tiny little brush and going to something larger like the Raphael 8404, great brush

Right? I always assumed, I need the smallest brush possible to paint details. Now, I'm mostly working with a Size5 from DaVinci, simply because it holds paint forever and the tip is fine enough to paint almost everything... XD I only switch to the small one for places on the model that are hard to reach with the big one.

It seems logical that you would want a "tiny little brush" to paint a tiny little detail, until you finally realize that the paint drying in the "tiny little brush", before you can get it on the model, makes it harder than using a larger brush with a good sharp point. Sadly, I was painting miniatures on and off(mostly off) for around 30 years before I fully realized it.😑

I'm definetly interested in some of those Raphael 8404 brushes. Right now, I'm using Army Painter & Reaprr brushes for most stuff. I'm working on wearing out the last of my citadel brushes, too.

Love my 8404s but still think Windsor and Newton are my favourite brushes overall

Raphael 8404s are great - my favorites as well. I'd recommend trying the 8408s - buy a size or two larger than normal but you will be blown away by the points!

Discovered Raphael about 8 yrs ago. Vallejo was my go to, which is a excellent quality, consistant in usage. Never failed to satisfy. Tried Raphael.....wow what a difference beats vallejo, Windsor Newton allday long. Kinda hard to find sometimes but worth it

Getting back into mini painting and have gotten to the point where I'd like some nicer brushes that hold their point but I was left scratching my head trying to navigate this market. 100% agree I get here to see a review of Rosemary/artis opus. I have painted for 5 years at my studio (Ghostlee Miniatures) and my battle brushes are Raphael and Escoda (golden metallic part), I still use my Escoda brushes after more than 5 years, but they are harder and lack of the precision Raphael gives you. Cheap synthetic craft brushes are my go to. Goldline i think they're called. Use them for everything. Once the tip goes i demote them to drybrudhing, bases etcetera. Cheap enough to just break out a new one. :)

GW used to have fantastic brushes I still have some they used to have produced back in the 80's/90's that still serve me very well and still keep fantastic points on them. Brushes though are very much a personal choice and how you look after them very much makes a huge difference as well.

I think I've heard many artists refer the "stiff-soft ratio" as the "flow" of the brush. It bends to where you are directing it, yet bounces back.

I have 2 Windsor and Newton 000 series 7. I've had them for 20+ years and they both still have a point. Back then they were around $17 US, now a little more expensive. But general stuff is hobbylobby or Michaels cheap brushes.

The word I believe you wanted to use when you mentioned softness and stiffness is “ spring “ in the brush lingo.that describes what you were saying in one word lol .And I think you are right in that brush choices boil down to just two things-cost and availability. But if these are removed then yeah I believe, WN series 7 and Rp are top notch. Great video btw.

Raphael 8404 from 1 to 4 have been mu absolute favorites. Ive recently been using both synthetic and Sable brushes from Monument Hobbies and they are wonderful! I love my Artis Opus as well but the Raph's to me have been the best on every category. Ive had 3 Windsor and Newton Series 7's and must have had nad luck with all 3 because they vrapped out so quickly with regular brush care.

I agree with all of this except that I still have not tried the Raphael and I do need to. My best brush is actually a Windsor & Newton Scepter Gold.

My favorite is Windsor Newton. Expensive but good. But any brush can work you.. you just need to find the right one. Separate ones for metallics is a good idea.

Weirdly enough, Windsor&Newton were my worst experience in case of brushes. I thought, I'd get some really good quality for that price and then the brush started splitting after the second time I used it. And from the beginning it had a really bad tip. :( Strange, because I heard only good things about them. I got some DaVinci Maestro brushes afterwards and been using those ever since.

Brokentoad brushes are amazing!

Here in the UK the Raphael 8404 are more expensive than the W&N

A #1 Raphaël does the job of basing, washes AND highlights! Don’t let the size fool you - the point you get with these are without comparison. Well... until I get my Winsor & Newton’s in time compare.. but I’m not gonna hold my breath!

I use a few really cheap ones for big surfaces came in a 12 pack. And the smallest brushes I could find for details. And two 20 year old citadel drybrushes I bought on clearance sale back than (big one and smol one).

Damn I've been looking for the Raphael 8404 brushes in my city and couldn't find any :< I could order online but then adding the shipping costs would put them in the same bracket as the w&n hehe

Dave Smith which series do you use?

The word you're looking for in regards to softness/stiffness is 'snap'. I generally found my Artist Opus brushes to have quite a bit more snap than Rosemary (which I agree are just too soft for my tastes). Raphael 8404 series are great, though I'd stay away from the 8408 as it is the 'extra pointed' version of the 8404 and has a longer taper to a finer point. That might seem like a good thing but in my experience the tip is so long and thin it becomes difficult to control. You might want to give Da Vinci brushes a shot. Their Maestro line has been one of my favorites and it sounds like we like a similar style of brush. I prefer them a touch better than Raphael and they're usually a couple of dollars cheaper. They're not cheap, but they're reasonable compared to some other top tier manufacturers. Believe it or not but Warcolours out of Cyprus has a really decent line of Kolinsky brushes that are extremely affordable. They're about four EUR each which is bonkers cheap for how good they are. So... basically the same as Warcolours paints; very good for an absolute steal of a price. It might even be a little cheaper for you since shipping to the EU is likely a little more reasonable than to the US where I am. Happy birthday by the way!

I definitely give a +1 for the DaVinci Maestro. They are simply gorgeous and my painting instantly got more precise, when I switched to them. They're not cheap, but still affordable. But you really pay for quality. I sunk more money into other brushes, simply because they broke down rather quickly, when I compare it to the one time investment I had with the DaVincis. Sadly, I once bought a really expensive Winsor&Newton and that thing started to split after the second use. :( So, those I definitely wouldn't recommend...

Which line of the Maestros do you like? I'm a huge fan of the 10's (pointed round) and 11's (full belly/english style round).

I had a very similar journey as you. First GW brushes (fortunately I didn't buy the super-expensive artificer ones), then after trying W&N at a workshop I bought those and was super content...until I tried Raphael when a friend suggested them. The price was ok so I sad let's try...and I was so satisfied that have never used other brands since. I wanted to try Rosemary&Co, but after watching your video I think I'll skip those.

Any chance of talking about cleaning and maintenance of brushes? You have a couple of cleaning items to the side in this video. I was hoping you'd mention them.

For both the Winsor & Newton Series 7 and Raphael 8404, do you use the short handle or the long handle ones?

I'm always debating btwn W&N 7 (regular, NOT their "miniature" which sucks and doesn't hold paint or even have as good a tip ironically) and the Raph 8404. No other brush comes close to these two that I've tried. W&N 7 has a slightly better tip IMO for extreme detail, but it has to be reshaphed sometimes while painting. The 8404 has an ever so slightly less thin tip (which is better for lines larger than a hair size) being painted, but holds it's shape almost constantly.

While I still consider myself a novice miniature painter, I have to say that of all the brushes I've tried so far, the Raphael brushes have easily been the best! I tried them out based on Miniac's recommendation and I'm happy to see that you recommend them as well! Also of note, I live in the USA and though you can currently find the Raphael brushes on Amazon, they are about twice the price that they should be. I ended up ordering mine from an art supply store in the UK (Jackson's Art Supplies.) Even with shipping, it was way cheaper than if I ordered them on Amazon.

The 8404s are roughly equal in price as the Series 7s here in Toronto, Canada. Still good though, I happily paid for them.

Ah, i've noticed the price of them differ ALLOT worldwide. Some countries are double the price we have.

The Rapheal 8404 is currently around £15 in the uk right now but if they last longer its a good investment.

This may be a dumb question I'm just getting into mini figure painting what would you say about silicone brushes and mini figure painting I saw those available at my hobby store as well.

How do you get a good tip with your Raphael 8404 size 0 brushes? Mine split into pieces after some brush strokes (they are new, I have this problem since the first model I have painted with them). I tried everthing, The Masters brush soap, boiling water to reform the tip, ...

Over the last two-ish years I have tried buying different Raphael 8404 brushes from different stores around Europe. The first pair (size 0 a 2) forked horrendously as soon as the brush touched water (It's a *water*color brush!). It never sorted itself out even with the Masters cleaner and preserver. Few months later I saw them in an art store, though, "ok maybe I just hit on a bad batch", got new ones (00 and 1) - exact same issue. Again not even the Masters cleaner and preserve could recover the tip. You fix it, it seems fine, you paint two or three brushstrokes with even the thinnest glaze and the tip immediately splits in two. During my years of painting I went through DaVinci (Regular and Maestro), Winsor and Newton, Vallejo Tajmyr Kolinski and most recently the Greenstuff World Silver and Gold kolinsky brushes. The DaVinci Maestro and GSW Gold I found to be the most reasonably priced and well made, the W&N well made, but quite pricey and these Raphaels to be pricey and utterly unreliable. Buyer beware - the quality control on these is bad.

I have some Maestros coming in the mail from Blick's, so this gives me a bit of hope. My W&N S7 literally forked like you explained after two uses. Did the same with Master's Cleaner and preserver multiple times and no dice. No paint got in the ferrule, and the brush still forked with just water.

What size would you recommend if I was only going to buy one primary quality brush at first? What other sizes/types of brushes should I be looking at initially for more of a sort of barebones set-up? For context these will be for D&D minis, and I'll be using the wizkids branded ones for the most part. Thanks! Love the videos:)

Winzer Newton's brushes are definitely great brushes. But there a brush you buy when you wanna spoil yourself. My favorite brushes are ones that are a mix between synthetic and hair.

I was waiting for you to talk about soup and brush cleaner. Do you recommend some brand?

The best brush I ever used were da Vinci brushes they never lost their tip. I had that brush for three years before I accidentally dipped it in a little bit of superglue and ruined it. Since then I’ve not been able to find a genuine dive brush that usually 45 apiece and they’re worth every penny.

Hi. Great video. I'm using W&N since a lot now and i'm fine with them, but with a friend of mine (who's vegan) we where wondering if there are some high quality synthetic brush in the same quality range of kolynski ones. Even if more expensive, at the moment is not an issue

I'm in no way a good painter but I have really enjoyed the taklon brushes from an American company called Trekell. They probably won't last as long as natural hair but I am actually liking them better than my Raphaels.

There’s a hard limit on synthetic quality, because the material isn’t as good as sable hair. It’s made of plastic. Maybe eventually we’ll invent a material that works as well.

Not heard of the Raphael brushes before so decided to check them out after watching your video. Not sure if the price points are different in the UK but I found that the Raphael 8404 are more or less the same price as W&N Series 7, maybe a little cheaper but not half the price as you suggest. It may be because W&N are cheaper than you suggest, around £10 with the equivalent Raphael being around £9.

Regardless of the price do you rate Raphael 8404 better than W&N 7. I get using Raphael in Sweden if they are half the price, but what if Raphael were mor expensive, would you still choose them over W&N 7

Since it's a natural hair product, depending on what batch you get it might differ a little in quality as well

Man, the Windsor and Newton go for around $75 Australian per brush....... The Raphael 8404 go for between $35-$65 Australian per brush, so definitely cheaper but still crazy for a full set.

Rosemary and Co are easily the best balance of cost and performance for daily use.

Honestly I never use any of my brushes that were bit more expensive. Like the best feeling and most used brushes I have are Golden Maple brushes and an entire set that goes from 5/0 to 8 cost me like 18 euros. They feel great in hand and they're ridiculously durable. They're simply an upgrade from any of the citadel brushes that's for sure and the triangular handles are almost a must for me. Like if there's one thing I regret it's buying GW brushes, both artificer brushes split fucking instantly as if they weren't even glued on. I got some Da Vinci Kolinsky brushes as a gift, used one of them once and while it did feel better I just never used it again because I can't risk using brushes that were like 150€ EACH. On top of that they were a gift so even if the buyer wanted me to use them I'd just feel terrible for even slightly damaging one. The difference to me at least just wasn't big enough to warrant taking such chances. Instead I just keep those brushes on display and will probably bust them out if I ever compete for Golden Demon.

6:30 I have similarly sized Davinci Maestro brushes (2/0 and 1) but when I'm trying to paint fine details I often find that the paint dries up on the tip extremely quickly. This forces me to press harder with the brush against the model and ruins my accuracy. Don't you run into the same problem with the brushes you are demonstrating?

Raphaels seem to be as expensive as the winsor newton, at least in Canada. I have an old Kroeger Inc Series 316 Germany Red Sable brush that I use for my fine detail 2/0 Love that brush. Can't find the company anywhere though.

Just posted something similar about the UK. Raphael maybe a little bit cheaper but generally Raphael 8404 and W&N 7 are about the same price. You can get a box set of W&N 7 (0, 1, 2 and 3) for £40.

I had to pay about ¥3000 to get a Windsor Newton to Japan & it split on the first model 😭 Actually the worst brush I have ever used. Maybe I got a bad one, but it put me off WN for life. Rosemary Co & Raphael have been very good & long lasting. I agree about the long tip & flex on Rosemary & paint dry quick. Raphael costs about ¥2000 each, so that's about €15/ 150SEK, but it's definitely been my best experience with the 8404. All these brands are difficult to get in Japan or often out of stock. I need to find some Japanese Kolinsky brushes as an alternative, but no channels do reviews of them, im sure they must have some good ones!

Hey mate, about the split tip. It can happen to any brand as its a natural material. There's very small things that could happen for it to be like that. All these you mentioned have the possibility to make great brushes, but you can have bad luck and get bad brushes from any one of them - and fantastic. Just gotta find the shape you prefer!

What!?!?!

What are they called? You raved about those last brushes but I never heard you say the name.

Part of the problem with kolinsky brushes is that these brushes from professional art supply brands are tailored for watercolours, not acrylics. A candle-light plume shape is the best here for watercarrying capacity, and the longer the hairs, the more expensive they get. Depending on the fluidity of the acrylic paint, it may or may not need the watercarrying capacity of the sable brushes. I always feel I am "killing" a sable brush by putting acrylic paint on it now... I hope, with all the vegan demands in addition, out there, that synthetics will improve to the point that they do not develop "hooks/bent tip" from use.

Vegan here. Do you know any vegan brushes which are actually good?? Don't wanna buy these

@@eetennak966 Returning to minis after a long spell of traditional watercolours/art, so dipping my kolinskis in acrylics makes my heart weep. I am trying out the Raphael Precision brushes now. So far so good. A bit stiffer than natural hair, which is good. The Jackson's Onyx could be an option too, especially for the larger sizes. Princeton Velvettouch are vegan/synthetic, too. Rosemary's has a big selection of everything. The tech is improving as the fibres get better (tejin, tadamis, etc.), all have Japanese names for the fibres. The test of time will show how good they are, if they develop "hooks" easily of not...

Acrylics brushes are often somewhat stiffer and have long handles, which is why one usually find the brushes one needs under "watercolur brushes" instead. I used the Daler Rowney System3 years ago, which are softer, but these developed hooks very easily...

6-9 månader bara? hur illa behandlar du dina penslar? har haft min WN S7 size 2 i 2-3 år, det som döda den var när jag inte vänta tillräckligt för superlimmet att torka, det dödar toppen

Målar man 12-15 timmar i veckan går de rätt snabbt att de börjar lossna hår, Speciellt de gånger jag får comissions som är resin och metall. :)

Really? Omg i did not expect that. I tried W&N and im totally astonished by the quality. After that i tried Rafael for pricing reasons and im totally disappointed, the broke up from the first paint Session on and do every time again. Im cleaning my brushes very, very carfully by using Alcohol and wiping it out in water. My favorite W&N brush died in a super glue accident, but it lasted for over an year and never lost shape. I'll never buy Rafael again i guess. So it was more than surprising to me to get to see your conclusion... Well if it works ^^, maybe i had a very bad luck with mine.

Oh thats sad to hear. I've got 7 of them and all worked fine. But i guess some times there are "duds". Alcohol can dry out the natural fat in the bristles though, for the same reason you dont clean your own hair with alcohol. Try finding a brush soap to clean it instead :)
