Best Bouts of the Makuuchi Division, May 2023

This May feels like the beginning of a new sumo era, in the best ways possible. We have a top dog running the show for the first time in months, as our beloved Yokozuna Terunofuji returns. Any doubts in his fitness were undeniably squashed, as he continues his stated goal of 10 career Yusho with a dominating 14-1 finish. Secondly, Ozeki gains a new member, as Kiribayama (now Kirishima) secures his new rank with an ample 11-4 score. He I believe, will be the first of several. Hoshoryu, Daieisho and Wakamotoharu are each producing consistently superb sumo, and with all three having 10+ wins this basho, are on track to reach Ozeki themselves in the coming tournaments.
I for one feel sumo shifting for the better. New talent has finally secured its place at the top, and we can literally see the new generation taking over throughout the ranks, a transition the sport has needed for years now.
So much good sumo this basho, I left the vid extra long this time around. Personal favorites here are Kotoeko, Oho, Ura and Nishikigi, all who had some incredibly impressive bouts. Cheers!

When you look at closely at sumo wrestlers, you can really tell just how much muscle is built up under their fat. Their arms and legs are so smooth - no cellulite, almost no sagging. I especially loved Ura's matches here, from the way he managed to outmaneuver Nishikifuji to the way he managed to spin Tobizaru off his shoulder and out of the ring!

Terunofuji's hook technique is so superb. The way he just hooks the arms, hoists them up and gently places them outside the ring is such a marvel.

I’m sure it’s far from gentle when you’re the one getting your arms ripped off lol. That move seems to be unbeatable once he’s locked in.

Dude this is bad ass! I love these fights edited together like this. Keep it up! I especially love the ones that follow a single rikishi.

A lot of people think sumo is just fat guys wrestling, but holy shit look at the backs and shoulders of these guys, if they ever decide to cut they’d have an insane physique

Wakamotoharu had a great tournament, maybe holding things down both for him and his brother while he is out. Kotoeko looks really strong throughout. Kiribayama really looked like a man who deserved promotion to Ozeki, but damned if if I was really pulling for Kotonowaka against Teru. So close! He's got the size I just think he needs a little strength training and he'll be a monster.

Thanks dude, and more is coming I promise. Funny things are kicking off now, as I'm in the middle of a big move and have never been so busy. Finally cooling down though. As for a translation, my Japanese is rusty at best- I assure you I'd have one if I could manage it

I appreciate everything you do, but wow does it suck that we can't use the NHK footage for anything. The random zooming and panning is terrible. They managed to miss the end of Ura vs Nishikifuji. Maybe you could mix in LeoDickenson’s footage where needed?

I cannot express enough the frustration of making a perfectly fine video but the inherent footage has awful quality and painful shot jumping. Every new channel that starts using NHK is being shot down too. We'll see. I'm changing careers and moving this month, so I doubt things change much as of now, but we'll see.

@@full15sumo I’ve noticed that Sumo Spiffy manages to mix a bunch of sources together and get away with it. Maybe ask them what their secret is 🤷🏻‍♂️I’m not sure if they ever use NHK straight-up, but they definitely use LeoDickenson’s stream, which is of the NHK’s footage, plus some extra to avoid copyright strikes.
