Best Black Hills Hiking Trails - Sunday Gulch Trail (Custer State Park)

Спорт

Sunday Gulch is one of the most unique hiking trails in the Black Hills, and one of my favorites. The trail is a 2.8 mile loop, rated strenuous, and takes 2-3 hrs to complete. See below for tips about hiking this trail.
Date Filmed: 6/13/2019
Tips
1. There is no cell phone service in this area. Pack appropriate food, water, and emergency supplies to spend the night on the trail if need be. You never know when you'll break an ankle hiking in rough terrain. You won't be able to call for help.
2. Best to start before 9am. This trail begins behind the dam at Sylvan Lake. Sylvan lake is a popular destination and the parking lot is usually full by 10am. The trail is not crowded, but there will be lots of people at the lake.
3. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in this area, your best bet to avoid them is to do this hike in the morning.
4. The trail is very rocky and good shoes are a must. You will get your feet wet.
5. You can hike the loop trail in either direction, but clockwise has proven to be the more enjoyable route for us. Have fun!

Thanks for the great video! I wish I had seen it before I hiked this trail a couple years ago with my mom and sister-in-law! We had been planning on doing Black Elk Peak but switched to Sunday Gulch last minute. (We stayed at the Palmer Gulch KOA, and when we realized we could see the fire tower from our cabins and actually got a look at what the elevation gain would be, we chickened out. 😅) We had done less research on SG, but knew enough that we were comfortable going. We ended up going counter-clockwise, and while the other two held up fine, I ended up with mild heat exhaustion and a migraine. The long slow uphill in the middle on a hot day really did a number on me (so better in the long run that we decided against BEP). I'm planning to hike it again the next time I'm in the area, but I'll be going clockwise this time! 😊

Great video. I was here in 1967 when I was 12 years old and got lost while walking the area around Sylvan Lake and ended up near Harney Peak. No cell phones back then and no marked trails. I got lucky and was found around 6 pm after being lost for 8 hours. Please stay on the trails !

That's quite a story, glad you made it back! Trails are marked pretty good now, but people still get lost. A few years ago we helped a guy and his son who had been wandering around for hours trying to find their way back to where they started. Even though we have cell phones now, there's no signal so they're useless. Nothing beats a good old paper map! 😀

great video! I grew up in that part of South Dakota (now just turned 70) and want to tell you that i actually really enjoyed your video. 1) your son is 'cool' - I would have lived to have him in my classroom, I am sure (music teacher retired); 2) your music was subtle somewhat ; 3) we could hear the stream sounds, etc. 4) I bet your feet were COLD! Sylvan is a gorgeous lake and it is a cold lake as well as a cool one! 5) it was a good family video but you didn't keep showing us selfies and zits, etc. You had enough family for you all to enjoy this when he gets older and we enjoyed meeting ya'll. I will look and see what else you have done, too.

We've hiked Sunday Gulch I think 4 times now, and it's always so much fun. It's quite crazy in the winter with ice and snow. Lol. We just hiked it recently and put out a new video of it. Feel free to check it out if you like. Thanks for sharing your video of this fun hike! Summer is probably our preferred time to hike this. 😆🥾 Happy New Year!

If you go clockwise be careful. At one point the trail continues behind some rocks to the LEFT and there is NO MARKER. There is a small path on the right leading up a steep hill to nowhere. I was about 30 feet up when I decided something was wrong. I went down and looked around and saw that path with a railing literally hidden, unmarked, where the actual path continued. It's right at that point in the video when you turn left and find the path with the waterfall coming down. Apparently many people had the same problem because as of 2 days ago the path leading up the wrong way was well-worn for a good 30 feet up...where apparently we all felt something was amiss!
