😂 The first few games of HoI are hilarious. I remember losing againdt Poland. After finally learning combat somehow Allies troops pushed out of Switzerland and so on. So much funny stories.

My first playthrough back in summer 2016 was with Germany. It definitely helped me learn all aspects of the game and kind of go at my own pace to start WW2

My worst learning curve was definitely learning how division templates worked, I was losing really easy wars because my templates were just awful.

@@bubbli2360 my play style is to pretty much use just infantry, so I make my divisions somewhat beefy in order to make up for no tanks. What I like to do is about 9 infantry (if you can afford it do 10-14) and 2-3 artillery (depends on production numbers again) definitely use support companies as well, logistics is great for supply usage, engineers are great for defending a point, anti air is self explanatory but only use anti air as support, and support artillery is definitely really decent. Go all the way right in the superior fire power doctrine. You will need to build infantry equipment, artillery, support equipment, and trucks to maintain this. It can be pretty expensive I’m not going to lie. I would suggest starting as a really good production country like Germany and building a lot of military factories while also balancing it with civilian factories. Also, it’s important to balance production and divisions. If they are too big than it will be much harder to keep them supplied.

​@@corey_the_bird3086One time I was really good but started to produce 20 divisions and didnt know they were infinite production. My economy was dead after that. I somehow should try the infantry only aswell. I can't keep up the tank production after a few months.

I have under 1000 hours in the game and I just used the preset Bulgarian (I’m a bulgaria main) templates but will add 1 arty.

Cuz they actually knew how to shoot back unlike the French who thought that the baguettes could kill a German just like they kill our appetite

day 4 of asking ISP to play as austria because theres a new strat for austria since blood alone where you can survive the anschluss because of the unpassable alps, you also would have to do a agency and boost ideology in hungary for non aligned so they dont join the axis. i would really like to see you try that

Italy and the Stresa Front is nice. In my current game we just decimated Germany and the Axis in Europe. Germany didn't even get to touch Poland until near the end and because they did Poland, they had all countries bordering them attacking them (Poland was getting hit by the Soviets to the east. I got dragged into war with the USSR). Germany surrendered. Most of the former European Axis was split up. Germany had a regime change (German Republic) That's where it got wierd. The US joined the war and I am at war with Russia and Japan. Democratic Germany invade Luxembourg (they didn't get past the Anschluss since the Stresa Pact was formed (so they have that entire focus tree left). As a result, World Tension wasnt even at 40 yet when "WW2" started. It is more accurately the German-Austrian war since it only effected Europe). They then join Japan's alliance...after we just got rid of the German Army. So they are instant fucked. I have put Italian Soldiers in the Philippines and the Italian Navy is over there as well while all of Europe marches on Moscow And the Balkans are all Italian owned or Italian puppets except Greece.

I got thrown into the deep end as Italy in a multiplayer game with a friend playing as Germany. He didn’t even tell me how to do the combat so within a week Ethiopia had retaken most of the north and half of the south. I was attempting to give my units individual attacking orders with no front line by left clicking and just watching my territory disappear. He had to send volunteers and save me. Then the motherfucker expected me to understand NAVAL the first game! I still don’t understand it 3 years later!

It starts out as, “I want to take everything, why can’t I,” as Germany, and once you’ve played enough it becomes, “should I declare war historically, or build up, or invade Poland in 1937?”

Germany taught me this game. It can teach you about every mechanic. Want to learn Naval stuff? Play Germany you'll soon learn when you have to deal with the Royal Navy.

Don’t forget El Salvador

The first time i played Germany (when i just started playing the game), i didn't know Britain will guarantee people when the world tension is high enough. So i went after Poland by justifying above 25% WT, and didn't think to put an Army on the French border, as i didn't know it was important. Well, as i was walking into Warsaw, i saw that i didn't have nearly as many factories as i should have, i zoomed out, and half my country was occupied by France. This was somewhere after "Waking the Tiger" was released, and i was playing a pirated HoI at the time. I now have it bought, and have learmed since than.

As someone who's played this game for 4k hours with 3.9k of them as historical Germany I agree! The best part is your access to the "brutal suppression" occupation law!

Bro I learnt the game playing ethiopia back when it didn't have a focus tree. I then played irenland and conquered the uk. 650 hours in and I haven't done a single germany playthrough yet

@@kyrozephyr8628 Nah, I prefer having the production efficiency and tons of guns, support equipment, artillery and anti-aircraft guns so I can fully focus on tanks and aircraft once I build up my defense industry and researched the according parts.

@@hopfinatorischerkuchenkrieger All useless old equipment, only support equipment would last and you'll have more than enough with 3-4 on it from the start. You're going to have far far more mil factories by converting mil to civ from the start even if you start building mils late. Believe me I've done both methods a thousand times SP and MP. Stockpiles of infantry, artillery, and antiaircraft are useless if you're playing with tanks and planes. Even if you do micro your infantry a bit you'll capture far more than you lose with your encirclements and overruns.

I began with Hungary. You can get a powerful ally, tons of gainable territory without war, and with dlc you can pretty much do any ideology

As a beginner i played germany at first, i really didn't build an airforce, and it took me a year to conquer poland, meanwhile i couldn't even get trought belgium

Did man decide to wake up and produce HELPFUL CONTENT? Unbelievable!!!

Honestly, for any actual newbies who are intimidated by the game the first time around, I'd seriously suggest you play as a country without a unique focus tree the first time or two. Play as brazil or something, they come with a little bit of industry. After that, play as one of the Commonwealth nations besides Britain. South Africa or Canada are decent choices for this.

The "Eternal state" goes hard if you know the history of the country

The nation that I learned the game on was Peru. Yes, it only had the starter focus tree. However, you start with a somewhat decent infantry template, a small navy, and an airforce. The neighboring countries are pretty weak, so any mistakes made in wars are pretty forgiving. Plus the Monroe Doctrine only activates in the late game once you get too big, so typically you don’t get involved in war with any major countries until the game is almost over. As a plus, it got some new mechanics with the South America DLC that make it even easier to play. It will always have a special place in my heart

Still remember the first time i played hoi4 i wanted to land lock poland so k just put my troops at the north near their oceon border, i declared war and the polish started taking me from the south i can’t remember exactly what i did but i thought i justified only on the north anyways soon enough i got encircled and then died

I tried to do this in my one attempt as a beginner, spent 5 hours building up what I thought was a good nation and then invaded the Netherlands and got completely destroyed by the allies in 2 minutes. Yet to try and learn the game again 😂

ISP giving us really great advise for begginer HOI4 has the same energy as your local crack head giving you the greatest life advise you've ever heard and I love it.

Germany was the first Nation I played (after the tutorial) and it really helped me learn all the mechanics especially land and air battles the only part you don't get to really play with a lot is the navy which I think beginners should avoid at first anyways.

I want a beginner nation THAT IS NOT A MAJOR POWER…

My first game was as Czechoslovakia. I think this is the best country for beginners. You can start with simply surviving German attack, and then move to more comllex gosls like conquering the world. After I mastered this country, I can annex China as Czechoslovakia, before Japan invasion.

I think what he failed to consider is that most players don't even know how to deal with the mechanics. In fact if you play Germany, you did probably die from the extensive amount of work you have to do alone. Get filler infantry, get industry, build synthetic refineries, get good tanks, get good tank micro kills, get a good airforce, get the war timing correctly, get sea lion with no navy. And most importantly, you need to know how to deal with industry and tech, which are pretty hard for newbies. PS: Ironically I actually started my journey in HOI4 with Germany, and it tooked me 500 hours to know how to get everything under control.

Just bought hoi4 few two days ago. My first game was as Hungary with my friends and because I was really lucky i Austro-Hungary and annexed Czechoslovakia without having to battle anyone. The first time I played Germany I successfully got rid of Adolf and was thinking about getting Benelux later. Wish me luck.

i think rule of thumb of paradox game is start with bigger/op nations first, that make its easy to learn the game mechanic

My first nation was Poland. That was my very first experience with any paradox game.

My friend, when I went as beginner at Germany, I lost for Luxembourg and Netherlands.

i learned how to play HOI4 by playing Hungary, a LOT of times.

And if you pick your Focus right you can get Italy, Bulgaria, and whatever the name of Romania is at the time in your Faction, and even get Japan to back you.

The 1st country i legit played on Hoi5 was Switzerland, i knew i would'nt have to worry about winning wars

I just got the game and played as my home country of Argentina, I did quite well as I joined the Allies and completely annihilated the Germans in Western and Western-norwestern Africa. I’ve learned alot on that, though I’m still trying to defeat the axis

Then soviet italy and france declared war on me while there was really nothing between us even our relations were perfect. When they occupied most of my land uk joined axis (axis was only germany that time) and they invited me to axis so i joined they also joined my war and literally carried me. In 1939s america joined us few months later we won

I'd say that Britain is one of, if not the best beginner nation to play as you can learn combat mechanics and other game rules with the fallback of being invincible as no ai will ever attain the ships to challenge the british fleet
