    The term "barbershop" as applied to fragrances is uber common and largely subjective. I have my definition and other people have theirs. Therefore it's not as abused and misused a term as is "fougere", which actually has an eponymous fragrance to define the genre, in much the same way Claude Monet's "Impression Sunrise" painting defined the Impressionist art genre. All that said, here are my top 10 "barbershop" fougeres, with some bonus favorite fougeres I don't really consider "barbershop": 1. Tom Ford Beau de Jour: Most beautiful aromatics and lavender combination in the game. This a classic masterpiece in my opinion and released just 4 years ago. 2. Penhaligon Sartorial: Created to replicate smells in a specific London tailor shop, it by accident also qualifies as one of the best and most unique barbershop fougeres. 3. Tom Ford Fougere D'Argent: One of Tom Ford's triad of fougeres, it is so similar to Sartorial it has to be here. 4. MDCI Invasion Barbare: A 5/5 masterpiece according to critic Luca Turin. I have the Caesar bust bottle. 5. YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme: Discontinued and considered maybe the quintessential barbershop Fougere. It is high on a staple of most modern barbershop fougeres: powderiness/soapiness. 6. Azzaro Pour Homme: An early modern reference barbershop Fougere. 7. Drakkar Noir (and the five near-clones of it I have): Highly mentholated, complex variation of a BB Fougere. 8. Davidoff Zino: Superficially similar to Bea de Jour. 9. Lalique Pour Homme lion: I don't think this woody Fougere is really that "barbershop" (like its near-clone Creed Bois du Portugal), but I'm including it here. It, and Creed Bois du Portugal, maybe my favorite actual scent profile along with that of Beau de Jour. 10. Milano Cento Him/Lancetti Monsieur: medicinal tinged Italian/Italian-Themed fougeres. Lavender is in my opinion the nearly-essential fougere note. But a few that were included in the video I personally don't think are that "barbershop". For example, I personally don't see Floris No. 89 as a barbershop frag. To me it's a quintessential mid-century English Gentleman's Cologne. It's like Creed Tabarome without tobacco. Dry, astringent, understated, and very English. But if that also equates to "barbershop" to many, that's fine. Floris Elite is a favorite of mine. Often described as "a hybrid of Creed Bois du Portugal and Polo Green", it has in my opinion barbershop Fougere elements, although I don't consider it that barbershop. And as a Fougere from Amouage, I would select Bracken Man over Sunrise Man, which I've never tried. Bracken man is the most photorealistic Fougere I've ever laid nose to. It smells like an uprooted, earthy damp, green fern, muddy roots, green frond and all, in a marsh. But I consider it more a modern interpretation of a classic Fougere, along with Houbigant Fougere Royale 2010. Other favorite fougeres: 1. Creed Bois du Portugal/Lalique Pour Homme lion: #4 in my overall collection. Very smooth woody fougere. 2. Houbigant Fougere Royale 2010 3. Amouage Bracken Man

    Great list, thumbs up. I haven`t tried the others from your list, only Beau de Jour and I ordered now an 100 ml bottle. It is classic and modern at the same time, very classy. Sartorial and Invasion Barbare sound interesting too. I own Platinum Egoiste and it is a great contrast to my other fragrances and especially to todays blue and sweet fragrances.

    I wondered why Sartorial didn't make the list. Also, I never thought of Drakkar Noir as a barbershop scent, but I CAN say that it is still one if the most complimented fragrances I wear. (I am speaking of vintage).

    I love this category and have most of these except #1, which I’ll have to try. I would definitely throw in Azzaro and Paco Rabanne por homme, Egoiste, along with the Platinum version, and Dior Eau Sauvage. Those are my favorite. I definitely wouldn’t consider Sunshine Man a Barbershop Fougiere. Appreciate your number one, I read good things about it.

    Houbigant Royale Fougere is the first. Came out in 1882, so you're off with 70 years. That's also where the name originates. Old spice came out in 1938. Also a quintessential fougere. Great list but be careful about spreading false information ;)

    I thought JFK was associated with the Kennedy family, please explain 8&Bob🤙🏾

  • @joelthenose

    @joelthenose

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes. John F Kennedy was part of the Kennedy family. In 1937, when Kennedy was a college student, he toured France. While there, he did what any red-blooded American male does while on summer vacation on the French Riviera: He struck up a conversation with a strange Frenchman about the fragrance he was wearing. Turns out that the delicious-smelling Frenchman, Albert Fouquet, liked to dabble in perfume-making. According to Eight & Bob lore, Fouquet left a fragrance sample at JFK's hotel with a note that said, "In this jar, you will find the dash of French glamour that your American personality lacks." Burn. When Kennedy got back to the States, he sent Fouquet a letter saying that all his friends back home loved the fragrance, and asked the perfumer to send eight samples and "if your production allows, another one for Bob." (Bob, of course, is Kennedy's baby brother, Robert Kennedy.) Fouquet complied, and labeled the samples "Eight & Bob," and a brand was born.
