Coming from a lifelong STL fan, this is on the GM (Armstrong). He has done a poor job the past three years with bad signings and a lack of good resignings. Chief was not the problem. The roster makes no sense.

As a Blues fan, I was shocked and saddened when I saw this news. I never thought Craig Berube was the problem. Doug Armstrong has done some brilliant moves and some questionable moves as GM of the Blues. This falls under one of the questionable moves. Craig Berube certainly left his mark in St. Louis and that is something that no other coach of the St. Louis Blues has done and that's win a Stanley Cup. I will miss him as coach of the Blues and I hope Drew Bannister does well as the Blues' coach. I will be at their game against Ottawa.

Cannot believe this. I mean read the depth chart. This team is lucky to be 1 game under 500. Armstrong has made no effort to improve the defense. The forward groups are hodgepodge of Young inexperienced players(Neighbors Torpchenko), good depth veterans(Sunquisdt,Hayes) and players still finding their groove(Thomas,Kyrou) at an NHL level. To think this is Berube’s fault is a next level mess up. Unless you’re all in on a rebuild, this move is stupid and will bite Armstrong.

  • @JustBob-sw4rf

Armstrong did try to improve the defense last summer. Unfortunately, Krug invoked his no trade clause (NTC) to refuse the trade. Krug, Leddy, Faulk, and Parayko are all on NTC’s with 2 years, or more, left on their contracts. By handing out so many NTC’s on defense Armstrong tied his own hands.

Sorry to see Berube go. But, for him this will probably turn out to be a blessing in disguise. He didn’t deserve to have to coach this mess of a team that Armstrong created. With so many overpaid underperforming players on long term NTC contracts, the team’s going to be a bottom dweller for many years. Meanwhile, Berube will get another NHL head coaching job and he’ll do fine. Side note: I believe that Berube’s family lives in the Philadelphia area. So, though being fired is no fun, at least this should result in more holiday time with the family than he’s had in years.

Berube was given a team of retreads and castoffs from other teams fronting a troupe of Armie's bad contracts and a passle of untried new kids. Armie ignoring leading scorers (Perron) and let genuine stars walk in free agency over no-trade clauses (Petro, O'Reilly) and let's make that Chief's fault because he didnt make a silk purse from Armstrongs sows ear? Right. Sure. You betcha. Fire Armie.

Hmmmm...Just woke up and saw this. Just jumped over to this video after Shannon said somebody had been fired. I just wanted to see who it was before going back to sleep. I did not imagine I would see a Blues sweater on Shannon. Everybody knew this was a retooling year for the team. I was originally surprised that Berube would want to be part of that. He had earned the right to be on teams that are better than the Blues are right now. His agreeing to stay and not ask to leave I believed showed his dedication to the Blues. There HAS to be more going on behind the scenes. If I was Berube, in the middle of the season, I WOULD WANT the Blues to fire me...especially now, before the year is up. This gives me plenty of time to be hired this year by a team that is near playoff ready and or is playoff ready for an extended run next year. The one thing that you can say about COACH is that he has shown in the past that he knows how to kick butt to help motivate a team. As far as Armstrong, while I do agree he has made his mistakes...especially the three ones that I keep seeing mentioned with this video...he is so well respected and even recently has been given extra duties by the rest of the Hockey World outside of the Blues...he knows what he has in Coach AND Armstrong is very aware of the current "dumpster fire" state of the Blues...hmmmm....I just can't see him laying this at the feet of Berube. Something else MUST be going on. That being said, if this is just Armstrong trying to motivate this team or if he really believes that this is the fault of Berube....Well, if Shannon says that "Stupidity should be a 2 minute penalty" then let me state that, "Mismanaging a team should be a game misconduct". ( I really DO hope that there is something more of a positive nature to this firing than we are being told)

As much as I bash this team, I liked Berube. He should replace that pylon behind the bench in Ottawa. As for the Blues, I think this is a case of "Someone has to go. I can't fire the players. I'm not gonna fire myself. Sorry, Craig, but you're the only one left." Here is what I have seen in the games lately: Thomas regressing back to "I'm afraid to shoot the puck. When I miss the shot, I stop playing, roll my eyes, leisurely get to the bench for a change, and next shift it's pass-pass-pass." I really hate watching Thomas play. Kyrou - the $8M joke. 5G, 12A, -9, 4PPP, 89 shots. $1.6M/goal so far. But let's look at +/-... 17 points - 4PPP = 13 + 9= 22. So the opposition has scored 22 points against Kyrous line vs their 13 points scored in 27 games. So his line is giving up NEARLY a point per game while scoring 1 goal in a little more than every 2 games. YOU CAN'T WIN LIKE THIS!!!!! If this was just this year, no worries. But he has a proven track record of not playing defense AT ALL. He's on pace to get back to that -38 from last year. .... but he's worth $8M/year?!?!?!?!?! the guy can't do anything without a topnotch center or winger either. His creative skills are just bad. The Defensemen ... Krug, Scandella, Parayko, and Perunivich. They are just pylons out on the ice. Parayko is the worst. He isn't a scorer, and he can't defend anything when the puck is at his feet. Just watch the game last night. He's in front of the net w the puck at his feet. He literally circles the puck looking for it, and one of the Redwings knocks it in. Qthe puck was there so long that I actually yelled at my TV, "OH MY GOD!! LOOK AT YOUR FEET, YOU TOOL!!!" Binner needs to be a backup. This team is a mess

Yet another Blues fan echoing much of the same. Surprised by the decision. Feel bad for Bannister taking over and (potentially) being in the line of fire for something he didn't choose himself. All the best to Berube moving forward. There's plenty of teams that would be lucky to have you and I hope you make it back to STL someday.

Well, this is quite the news to get at 1 in the morning... Yeah they were sputtering, but I thought they'd at least let him finish the season. He'll find a job in the NHL soon. He's a good coach with the resume to back it up. Wouldn't be surprised if Buffalo, Columbus, or a few other struggling/rebuilding teams give him a look. At least he has a Cup to his name and he'll always have that 2019 turnaround

I'm in the same boat as many of the Blues fans as I think it's time for Armstrong to go and not Berube. If Armstrong's goal was to not have any superstars on his team then he sure accomplished that--for the rest of us I think have a team of mediocre players doesn't cut it. I think the drafting has been mostly crap over the past several years and that's on Armstrong (the 2023 draft may prove to be good but time will tell).

Blues fan - I think Berube was a great coach, especially for the 2018-2020 Blues. I agree with everyone that the team construction falls under Army and that it is not a team that is a Stanley Cup contender, but I also think a different coach could deploy THIS team more effectively. Let's see if Drew can make me a fannister Also, I think the fact that his paycheck keeps coming in is going to make getting fired around Christmas a little easier

This looks eerily similar to Joel Quenneville getting fired by the Blues. The issue wasn't the coaching then and it's not the coaching now. Berube did a great job with the Blues and this is surprising. Quenneville went on to win three Cups in Chicago after the Blues let him go. I would bet Berube gets another job very soon (maybe as soon as the very next opening).

I can’t help but add one more comment about Sens current coaching…there was something quintessentially apt about Sens stars Stutzle barreling up ice on a power play and having a mid ice collision with his own teammate Brady Tckachuk immediately negating a scoring outcome…this is a team with quality players.. ..CJ Smith has been a real positive for Sens…but time is now for a more structured and purposeful game…with a different Head Coach.

Like many others here, I'm not at all surprised by this move. Berube came in and turned that mess around in 2019, and we won our first cup. Then, through poor decisions and letting go of all the wrong people, we find ourselves in the situation we're in today. One might argue that it's the coach's job to find ways to motivate and make those players play a full 60 minutes, but that's a pretty weak argument when you look at the current depth chart, particularly on defense. Armie has been here forever, so he wasn't going to go, but I think that management has tried to work the victory lap from 2019 one too many times down Market St.

What makes this even more odd is that over the summer Armstrong even kind of tamed the expectations of the team basically knowing it's not a playoff caliber team and you still fire the guy who got you the only cup not so long ago. Went on the Blues FB page and many people seem to be upset about this and calling for Armstrong to be gone which I agree. I think Berube coached this team to as good as they possibly could be given the roster.

I'm not a Blues fan, but I've thought Armstrong has generally been good for the team. The NHL is clearly a Have-and-Have-not league, despite Bettman reinforcing the notion that there is parity (more like parody). What makes Armstrong bad right now? Maybe STL's window to win has passed and they have to rebuild / retool now? Yes they're not a playoff team this year, but they're also not a bottom feeder yet. There stars, Thomas and Kyrou, (almost typed Perron, as I always remember him in STL in the old NHL video games, and Perron's been a news headline recently) have under performed this year. I don't know what their blue line looks like, but Krug is definitely an adventure. I'd think Krug would be a fairly attractive depth defenseman for a playoff team. It'd be nice if they still had Pietro back there to stabilize, but eh.

I made a comment to a buddy of mine a year or two ago about having Berube as coach. It made sense on the 2019 team and even on the 2020-2021 teams. He seemed to be able to coach really well when he had a team of guys that could get an early lead and then lock down the game. Big guys that just want to hit and be physical. This isn't that team anymore. When we traded O'Riley and let Perron walk, it was a sign that we were departing from that type of team. Signing Thomas and Kyrou to long term deals was a further signal that we wanted to try and build a fast, young team. You could see that the team didn't look the same last year with this signal, and they are very hit or miss this year. You can blame Armstrong, you can blame Berube. The point is he wasn't right for this version of the team. Time will tell if this version of the team is any good.

They made no moves this past off-season to improve the issues they had last year. Now they are heaping the blame on Berube and firing him. As a Blues fan I always hope they turn things around but with the current state of the organization I can realistically see rough times are ahead.
