    I'm driving a late model for the first time next week and it has a bert and I'm used to a normal clutch and everything so this is definitely new to me since we ran thunder bombers. A dad's friend was actually impressed with our thunder bomber operation and is letting me test drive their extra late model and might even let me drive for him if it goes good! Thank you for the video I have a lot better understanding now going into it! Although still a little iffy about if I spin it out what to do but we'll find out! Thank you so much for the basics!

    Neat video. I've long wondered just what kind of modern drive train dirt cars now & how it works. Seems like it would take some practice to get used to that type clutch engagement.

    My boss just took ownership of an old Red Farmer late model and I have been tasked with getting it up and running. I'm a road race/endurance guy with experience with modern 6 speed stuff/dog boxes/DCT's n such. I am having trouble with the learning curve associated with all the crazy chassis stuff and this weird two leaver trans "not connected to shifters at moment" and this backward clutch thing. The engine is Dry sump and the pump looks to be an old NASCAR style but it is driven off the rear and mounted above the bell housing. I really would like to pick your brain for some knowledge.

    They're really not that expensive. It's cheaper to buy a roller than start from the ground up, if you wanna run a sportsman with some harder compound tires you can be in a competitive late model for under 12k. It'll cost you about 400 to 500 a week. my buddy runs a sportsman late model has for years right now he's got a 360 sbc running e85 he only races every other Saturday cause his job is rotating schedule, I think he spent less than 9k on the whole car, and I think he said hes only spending about 5k a season sponsor free if he don't drive like an idiot. It's not that expensive hobby and grassroots level it's just like any other hobby expense wise but when you wanna start getting in top five in a 604 you're looking at about 30k a season so that's where the sponsorship comes in hope this helps. Dont know if youve got one yet or not.

    @@dirttrackdevil1149I k ow I'm 2 years late lol...but I'm buying a late model next week. By sportsman do you mean 602 or 604? I know you said below 30k for top 5 604(I just wanna run with pack) and all the motors ice seen are 10k, that's why I asked?

    Look how swartz chassis sets the clutch up..a ton easier and less expensive.. no clutch pedal. Uses a lever in front of the shifter on a go cart master cylinder.. sweet set up

    Seems more difficult than it is of course I grew up with racecars? Few hotlap sessions and anyone should have the gist of it. It’s like learning stick nobody starts out an expert guaranteed you’re gonna screw up several times! I been doing it for a couple decades and if I’m not careful going from the kids mod mini 4 speed to one of these I’ll mess it up everytime 😂 and a sprint doesn’t have this much! They all have a personality for sure!

    So after your out on the track and you have it in high gear do you keep the clutch pressed down for the whole race or do you let off the clutch when your in high gear? Or does it have to get up to a certain RPM and high gear before you can let off the clutch?

  • @TallyWhackerRacing

    @TallyWhackerRacing

    You only use the clutch for reverse and first. Once you’ve got it in first and up to 2-3000rpm, you stab the shifter into second without using the clutch, and away you go. It is difficult at first, when you’ve been used to a PG or regular clutch movement. I’m also going to be swapping brake and clutch pedals/master cylinders next season, as I want the brake on the outside. Easier for me to get to, without knocking able bones with my throttle foot.

    This seems like rocket science to me lol I just dont grasp it. Maybe if I were to sit in the seat with the motor running it would be easier to understand. So basically the car is in neutral, you push it into forward gear without touching the clutch, then feather the clutch to get rolling, let off the clutch until you're going fast enough to ram it down into high (basically 2nd) gear without ever touching the clutch again?

  • @benbishop3689

    @benbishop3689

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes when in low you get it to about 2500-3000rpm and let off the clutch and gas and pull into high gear. At that point your ready to race. The clutch does nothing when in high gear. To stop you have to let off throttle and then pat it real quick while knocking the shifter back to neutral. You get used to it really quick though lol
