This one has been a long time coming, but now I'm glad that I've said it. It may disappoint many die-easy fans of unnecessary carnage, but the truth about berserkers is that they may have been a great deal more sensible and human than the rage-fuelled psychos so beloved by the world's male teenagers.
Here's a link to Roderick Dale's new Viking book (although Amazon inaccurately describes it as an audiobook and abridged):

As a swede the story I was told growing up was that the berserkers were elite soldiers, and in general that the vikings used psychological warfare and would sometimes act like animals in order to get themselves riled up and their enemies terrified. There's actually some evidence to suggest that some fighters were known to go into a frenzy where they just killed anyone in their reach, and that they were depressed for several days after such an incident, which modern psychologists theorize to be a symptom of severe viking-PTSD. Maybe all of that has been debunked but it's an interesting theory.

Because he wants to badly to seem smart in his nihilistic modernistic views on history. Not evrything can be rationalised with our modern views. Besides the obvious advantages of drugs in warfare or combat. (actual documented proof of modern army's using and experimenting with drugs) To discredit not only roman accounts but nordic and germanic accounts is rather odd. If it were propaganda only 1 accounted source would be named, not 10. As for naked warfare Native americans, Africans and other society's DID and STILL DO. Magical protection from bullets being 1 (African tribes), Protection from arrows or swords from a magical source of religious undertones. (Native american) As for one dimensional characters, it seems rather odd to say. As if berserkers only fought and drank their asses off each night, another assumption made by his own nihilistic assumptions on barbarian cultures.

If anything this promotes a COOLER image of beserkers. Now there can be story's of how this man goes out on his own, kills a bear single-handled, using his spear with both hands to cleanly pierce the animals skill, then wears its fur into battle. Or how a 'berserker' went into a duel with a knight in single combat then slung him down, appearing barbaric in his bear-skin but surprising everyone with his cool head and skill. I couldn't agree more - less one-dimensional is almost always better for characters and storytelling.

In Icelandic we have no direct cultural terms of a "Berserkur" ("Serkur" meaning a long sleeve shirt) as a formal title of a warrior, or a front line attacker. We do have a descriptive term "Að ganga berkserksgang", still used to day, describing how someone walks around in a fit of blind rage destroying everything (in terms of a battle "killing everyone near him").

They wrought Bareserkgang, and were not of the fashion of men when they were wroth, but went mad like dogs, and feared neither fire nor steel; but their daily wont was to be not ill to deal with, if nought was done to cross them; but they were straightway the most overreckless of men if anyone should beard them. Eric the Victorious, King of Sweden, had sent these Bareserks to the Earl, and gave him this warning therewith, that he should treat them well, and said, as was true, that of them might be the greatest avail if folk gave heed to their moods." TravaZZZik lol, never said they were not powerful, In fact I meant they were too powerful. They ruined the unit because when I got into playing Rome: Total War I was 10 years old and didn't have a tactical mind, so I didn't use ranged units against them and I got smashed. Also I find them way too historically inaccurate like Lloyd(don't know the correct spelling :/). But then again rome has mostly been inaccurate like Egypt being based on their ancient forefathers etc.

"His (Odin's) men rushed forwards without armour, were as mad as dogs or wolves, bit their shields, and were strong as bears or wild oxen, and killed people at a blow, but neither fire nor iron told upon them. This was called Berserkergang" as per Snorri Sturluson 1179-1241. or from Hrafnsmál 9th century, "I'll ask of the berserks, you tasters of blood, Those intrepid heroes, how are they treated, Those who wade out into battle? Wolf-skinned they are called. In battle They bear bloody shields. Red with blood are their spears when they come to fight. They form a closed group. The prince in his wisdom puts trust in such men Who hack through enemy shields." if you look at the phrase "wolf-skinned" in the above, that is a clear reference to the Úlfhéðnar, Odin's special warriors. In addition, the helm-plate press from Torslunda depicts a scene of Odin with a berserker-"a wolf skinned warrior with the apparently one-eyed dancer in the bird-horned helm" Sorry Lindy, I think your source let you down.

I agree, not only does he discredit the information as propaganda as if only the romans did. He seems to neglect the facts and importance of drugs in combat. Did he never go to party's? If i take 2 pills i can bounce all night long. Its the same as back then, how is it not credible to assume that ancient people's abused drug substances to enhance combat? Even in modern army's its use is still being experimented with. As for naked warfare, African and Native american tribes are a great source of material to consider when looking at these religious property's. magical protection from harm is not something predefined to one era or timezone. I believe his personal desire is to seem modernisticly nihilistic and in so doing seem smart because he rationalises pre modern barbaric civilisations. Wich ofcourse is silly and contradictory towards the real understanding of history and the people living in its age.

Funny enough, that passage doesn't describe frothing madmen on shrooms laying about in wild fury, but... Warriors. Just warriors. Scary warriors in wolf skins, sure, but still just warriors, not people going berserk in the modern sense of the word.

To go berserk is similar to come to a runners high for a sportsman or to go into suspace (if you are in the BDSM scene). It is just a mental state where you go, there is nothing magical on it, you can do this to yourself if you are brave enough to do enough pain and aggression to yourself. The book "wearing the wolf skin" describes the state and the way to it very detailed. It seems that the pain start the brain to release some neurochemicals which are affecting the higher brain functions. This works like a drug. I read, that warrior sects in Indonesia, Africa and India are even today uses the method. The pain is the key to this.

Orkar Isber Yeah, I also don't think all pagan ideals were good( I'm not lumping all pagans in one group), but Christianity is almost entirely ugh for me considering the entire religion is based on control rather than ethics that help society function, and worst of all they ripped off a lot from pagan culture and watered it down. For example calling Yule Christmas is just insulting considering "christmas" is almost entirely of pagan origin. Christianity should have remained a middle eastern disease.

Been a subscriber for a while. Lloyd's content is sooo unique and I can watch hr long talks with EASE! You make it fun and interesting. I think that's one of the most admirable/enviable things about being a GREAT teacher. You have to love what you talk about, but also "live" it, to an extent. And he does he has the armor weapons clothing's(Lloyd MADE most of it). In some videos you can tell you have bullet points to read from, But clearly they are something to just keep you on track and talk about the things you feel are important. When you go off on these wild hilarious tangents, where you just want to tell the viewers more and more and more; but methodically always reels yourself in and gets back to the main topics. Keep being you Lloyd!!!! Your content is second to none! I think a collaboration between you and Kevin Hicks from, TheHistorySquad, would make the fans go shield biting mad! "Berserk" if you will....Peace out Girl Scout!!!

In the Varangian Guard there are greek reports of specific "Beserkergang" warriors who would go into a great fury. They would then become lethargic for days. There is a scientific paper called "On Going Beserk: A Nuerochemical Inguiry" by Howard D Fabing (p.232) which talks about the possibility of it being a hallucinogenic Mushroom called the Amanita Mascara. Another paper theories that it could have been a genetic flaw, like epilepsy or self-induced hysteria ("The Viking Achievement" by Peter G. Foote and David M. Wilson p. 285). You should read both papers they are both quite interesting. Also it would be cool if you made a video on the Varangian Guard they are quite interesting.

Very interesting video. However, I think that the episode from Egil's saga was not a good example. The point of the story was that Egil was a poet who improvised verses while fighting. He kept talking, mocking his opponent, and tricked him into answering. Thus the berserker made the mistake of speaking, and abandoning his frenzy. I don't know of other cases of berserkers speaking during a fight, it really was a kind of violent hysteria.

he wasn't a 'berserker'. he was simply a 'giant of a man' wielding a large axe. and Harald's men charged him with spears.. a very NARROW footbridge. and he WAS fucking BIG. i don't recall just HOW they brought the big bastard down but probably numbers overwhelmed him eventually. edit: sorry. i was talking historically. the battle of Hastings is in M2TW though. i dl'd the demo the other day off of steam. i have a copy of M2TW but it just won't work on win10 so i'll prob have to buy it from steam as steam seem to update things well for windows, at least. also, i use the Stainless steel mod which makes the units a lot more realistic. try the Hospitaller faction holding onto a beseiged Jerusalem at the very start. they are the toughest to start a game with with that mod. then you have Eqyptians and Turks hitting you from the south and north and those middle east cities are cash cows once the trade routes are opened up.
