    The lope was much better on this horse than I’ve seen “trending”, he was picking his feet up and not tripping over his hoofs, but I would prefer to see his head a little higher, it’s too low, they should be level from rump to ears with a fluid, flexible movement. His stamina could be a lot better, he shouldn’t be that sweaty in under 5 minutes. A fit working reining horse should be able to work for a good solid hour before becoming that sweaty.

  • @livianwilliams1271

    Western discipline is usually about having loose reins that allow the horse’s head low to look “relaxed.” In my opinion it’s a lot about the western style/look,not particularly caring about which way would be healthier for the horse. It doesn’t look comfortable or correct. But rein gaming is basically about using less pressure on the horse’s mouth and more with your legs. But I totally agree with you.

    Sweat has nothing to do with fitness, some horses get super sweaty super easily, sweat depends on heat, we all know tyron was hot. Way hotter than what this horse is probably used to (Belgium's pretty cold). As long as the horse has ample access to water and salt, and they make sure he doesn't overheat there is no issue with sweat. Sweat is how the horse deals with heat, it has nothing to do with fitness.

    There are many successful riders in competition, but very view riding masters. This one is successful, but he is never a riding master. Horsemanship, simple, noble, serene, and of grandeur, is rare in our days and time. The "vanity fair" of modern equestrianism offers surrogate alternatives, elevates sham imitations to the status of supposed ideals and models. On the way up to success in anticipation of big money, athletes easily loose scrupel and ethics. Actually, the planet does not need more successful riders; the planet desperately needs horse understanders, horse whisperer, animal rights activists, storytellers and lovers of all kinds.

    In my opinion this guy's done some good things and some bad things. The good thing is that he's got his hand in that 10-inch box, meaning he's not loud with the reins. When he does have the reins in hand they are very loose and he's almost on the horse's poll. But they're not so loose the horse will trip. He's not yanking the head around, and based on his body language he is very relaxed and he is very prepared. He's using his body to communicate with the horse and I'm not entirely sure he even needed the reins to begin with.Those are the good things. The bad things: first and foremost that leverage bit. I don't like them, I don't think they're necessary, I think they're abusive, and with a guy like this, riding like this, he shouldn't need a bit in that horse's mouth to begin with. He probably could very very very very very easily gotten away with a rope halter or a bosal. My other concern is how low that that horse's head is when he starts out, and even throughout the routine, the horse looks like he's about ready to fall asleep in my opinion. The horse is acting like he's been trained with a tie down so tight he can't move his head. But you know what? I only get my information by using a critical eye and watching natural horsemanship trainers. People like Ray hunt, Buck Branigan, at times, Rick Gore, people who understand how a horse thinks. my favorite horse trainers are those who put the information out for free, so they make no money off of clinics, personal training or any of that bull crap

    A 10 year old horse may not be ridden in a bosal. Rules. I personally don't care for the super low headset, but by no means are the horses mechanically forced to do so. The AQHA breeding for these reiners and cow horses is different than other disciplines. They can't do these maneuvers poised like a hunter/jumper. They're built for work. Get down in the dirt! This was an amazing run. The horse is relaxed and looks like he enjoys his job. Love it!

    Julie Olson Thank you! One of my horses is a Reiner and he has a nice low calm head at the lope too. And...he slides better than this big boy (just sayin’ 😊) The only thing i thought was interesting here is that at the slide he did set back on the horse’s mouth a bit. When I’m sliding Decaf I don’t touch his face AT ALL. He needs his head to perform so I give it to him.

  • @calin7017

    @calin7017

    A reiner horse`s morphological structure make him keep the head like this. Is not that the horse was forced to keep it low. If a horse is not able to do manouvres like spin, sliding stop, roll-back and keep a round back by himslef, no trainer will get him at this level of competition. No trainer (a good trainer, I mean) in his right mind will force a horse to do something that the horse is not able to do. From hundred horses a trainer has to choose from, maybe only 30 will qualify to start the ground training and from them, maybe only 10 will go for advance training, but for high level competion probably only 2 will make the cut. Why on earth would someone waste his time on a horse who`s unable to perform? It is one thing that a horse doesn`t get the manouvre because he couldn`t understand and another that he cannot do it because he`s unfit for it. Can you see a bodybuilder do ballet, or a marathon runner lifting heavy weights? I don`t think so, either. So, for everyone who reads this, don`t fret about horse`s head or the way he picks his feet up, it is the attitude and the easyness of his performing that counts. And yes, there are bad trainers too, but they usually don`t get to that level.

    Not only the judges, but also the public play an important role in the show grounds, because a lay audience that does not know the difference between dressage and show lollop, and whose knowledge only refers to tournaments, tournament stables or the media e.g. the television, by ignorant moderators nicely-spoken faulty riding, will be impressed and applaud. Furthermore, these riders are still rewarded by incompetent judges with top marks. However, an audience with little or no expertise is much more likely to be impressed by spectacular performances. Unfortunately, today the human eye is shaped by the pictures of this faulty riding, which are delivered in the current international riding events Rollkur, Peanutroller are today the big winners in the sport.

    The main perpetrators at horseshows are, incompetent and ignorant judges. As long as they reward stressed and struggling horses, instead of a calm and natural dynamic movement, nothing will change, and will lead a lot more horses to frustration, neurosis and physical damage. So scream out in public your disapproval! Maybe you preserve another horse to be tormented by an ignorant imitator. Only the botcher who knows nothing about horse anatomy and kinetics, approves peanut roller and hyperflexion. Accomplished show riders should revolt against this brutalization of equestrian sports. But in my opinion there are almost more imitators unable to cope with the pressure of winning, than thinking competitors. The dreaded "Rein Lame" The horse has a mild gimp in his movement, but you cannot pinpoint where it is. I don’t see any collection at all, but I can see peanutroller, and reinlame horses, to say horses ridden in a forced frame. The western pleasure INDUSTRY is a good description for this kind of riding, it helps the industry to make big profit to the disadvantage of horse’s welfare, and lastly you don’t need skilled riders for this parody of riding.

    Any quarter horse with a good topline will carry there head low naturally and all it takes is a little chin curl to attain that form of rounded balance I train ranch horses and this is one thing I always teach because I want the horse to collect its self when I give a stop cue with the rains that way they are ready for a number of different directions I may need them to go if you’re horse doesn’t have it’s head down and feet under it when you ask it to do anything other then go straight it has a hard time doing it and will not do it properly causing you to loose the cow and work the horse harder to catch it again and repeat what you wanted the first time so in western riding this is very important to teach but what do I know I only ranch and train for a living

    One must distinguish between two head positions: the grazing position, with the head lowered useful on a pasture, horse out of balance, the weight is on the forehand, and the mounted position, with the head up, appropriate under a skilled rider, the horse is able to carry the rider in balance and collection.

    If a horses head is high they are hollow throughout the back and can’t carry a rider properly. When the head is lowered the horse is rounded and can carry a ride properly. When a horse is in the pasture they are NOT carrying weight. The headset and body must be aligned and collected differently to carry weight. Plus it’s a QH, they hold their heads low anyway.

    Colleen Martin stupid 'job'. Horses are animals not employees, not a pon to a ches game. Animals.

    If the horse was not doing this job he might end up as dog food. Think about it!

    I don't really understand reining at all. Also slapping the horse isn't rewarding or feels good.
