This is the one Rose's Turn that I find truly electrifying. The emotion (hurt, disbelief, anger, defiance, self questioning) are written so vividly on her face and are in perfect balance with the gestures, movement, and musical timing/singing/speaking. A very fine actress, Ms. Peters and a tour-de-force in this role, one which others might think she was miscast for but in fact she was "born to play."

  • @debra13

arthistoryliterature If you want to see an amazing tour-de-force performance of Mama Rose, get yourself to London by November and see Imelda Staunton. I saw it twice and would see it again if I could. I have read that Sondheim said that IS's version is his favorite and I understand why. I don't believe Mama Rose has to have a huge voice-what she has to have is the ability to sing and act in such a way that we are left understanding (in a limited way because in real life Mama Rose was much darker) the narcissism of this character, the fear she engendered, the breakdown, and yet still somehow be able to feel something for her. It gave me chills. Her performance at the end of the first act of "Everything's Coming Up Roses"-I was speechless. Her facial expressions, the way she grabs Louise as if she were her lifeline with no understanding of anyone else but herself-it was so, so fine. If she doesn't win an Olivier for it I will be shocked.

Ari Mazur-Mathieu I'm so glad someone else I 'know" saw this show and felt the same! It was spectacular wasn't it? I wish they would film it but copyright issues abound I guess. I hope she wins the Olivier as well! I'm sure she will perform, and it will be great, but for those who haven't been able to see the whole show it won't have the same impact at all. I think she will win, but if she didn't, it wouldn't change a thing about how I feel-I would just think she got robbed! P.S. Just saw your channel-you have a wonderful gift-I wish you much success and joy in performing.

For some reason, though, I still prefer Bernadette Peters in the role, even though on first glance she would indeed have been "miscast" by any measure for the role of Mama Rose. Why? Because she's so vulnerable despite the seething, stored up, fierce, shaking-with-fear feelings, especially when she beats her chest. She seems like a little girl as well as a mother. Maybe it is subjective, but I did feel from watching a BBC video of the Imelda Staunton-starring show that her Mama Rose was simply louder and more unpleasant, without the layers of vulnerability peeled off in Peters's version of "Rose's Turn," i.e., Staunton portrayed Mama Rose in more an Electra/Greek tragedy mode. I could much more for Peters's Mama Rose, both the speechless impotence and devastated vulnerability and then spoken/sung lashing out at her fate. Peters was so small (Staunton is of course of small physical stature as well), and when she was stamping her feet and gesticulating with her doll-like arms, I felt there was so much more pathos than in Staunton's "Rose's Turn."

The great thing about this piece is that it is SO well written that a actor can play a little. There are so many wonderful interpretations of it and they are all great. Some people prefer the angry, over the top. Some prefer the vulnerable layers Bernadette adds here. I personally love them all. It's difficult to "judge" a performance of a piece of music without seeing the entire piece of theatre. I was privileged to see this production and loved her in the role. She played it quite different than any other actress I have seen do it. Isn't that what acting is? Cheers Bernie...you rocked it.

People Hugh Jackman was on Broadway at the time. The hair is for his role ...I thing "the boy from oz " or something. ALSO, YES Peters was sick, LUNG INFECTION ( I think it collapsed at one point) that got reall bad right before she was meant perform that night. People were scared for her health as it was weeks of hearing how I'll she was. She had missed so many shows already but wanted to sing at the awards as it was nominated (because of her and the cast) so she asked her doctor to overload her on antibiotics and immune boosters so she could preform although she was told it could send her in relapse. B. Peters talent and voice are legend as deep/squeak raspy powerful. She pushed through. It's amazing.

I love Bernadette Peters; I was pre-flighting an entertainment system on an aircraft once while they were pre-boarding. I looked up from the VCR and saw this beautiful woman and blurted out, "You look exactly like Bernadette Peters" Without skipping a beat, she flashed me a gracious smile, and purred; "What a coincidence . . . I am Bernadette Peters" I tried to contain myself, but started laughing, she gave a sparklie eyed wink and with a chuckle took her seat in first class. I mumbled, "I love your work" and nervously finished my work on the VCR. She was gracious and kind during the stress of traveling - I walked on a cloud for the rest of the day.

I saw Bernadette's production in NYC when I went with my high school drama class. Personally, I enjoy her rendition of Rose far more than any of the other big name actresses. As with every role, the actor brings something slightly different to it and Bernadette's was truly amazing. I felt her Rose was always on the brink of despair, she wasn't the super tough stage mom like Patti Lupone, but a mother that had dreams always had to sublimate for others, it felt much more tender.

This is not - I repeat: THERE IS NOT another Broadway performer who can interpret Sondheim's lyrics with such utter perfection as Bernadette. Every moment - every word of the song is a complete acting piece. This is why the audience gave her a standing ovation. It's a mammoth piece because it was written for Ethel Merman who had a BIIIG voice but was kind of limited on the acting front. I think if we saw Ethel's performance today it would look extremely dated. Bernadette is the perfection of how to act a musical theatre song.

The Merman stuff is not really true. You can find the scene with Gypsy in the dressing room AND Merman's Rose's Turn on YT and there isn't anything lacking about her performance. The amazingly talented but often bitchy Arthur Lawrence spread negative stuff about Merman but the critics and the audiences loved her performance in this show. Rose's Turn isn't so tough to sing "technically", what makes it amazing is that it is an acting challenge. Peters is terrific as Mama Rose and she brings completely different colors to the role, like Lansbury (amazing as Rose) and Lupone).

***** I agree. Though Bernadette had one interpretation of Rose, Patti did something entirely different. It was darker and I love the fact that it hinted that Rose was maybe bipolar which might account for her need to push her children into the limelight. It's always interesting to see different approaches to the character.

Many years ago I took my teenage daughter out of school for a Mom-Daughter day trip to NYC. We got last-minute day-of-show tickets to Gypsy, THIRD ROW. After all these years I still feel the magic and can't believe our luck. Forever grateful for that experience.

Simply astonishing. I was lucky enough to see her performance on Broadway, and like this Tony performance, her take of this classic is heartbreakingly simply perfection… the emotional range she brought to that show blew me away, and simply watching this clip, brought it all back, and right now I am a teary eyed emotional wreck… wow, bravo

From IMDB trivia: Bernadette Peters had been suffering from a severe respiratory infection and had missed several performances of the show. Originally, the producers did not want her to perform live at the Tonys for fear of her damaging her vocal chords. She refused to cancel and insisted on performing live. She got through the song and received a 2-minute standing ovation one of the longest in Tony History.
