It is almost unimaginable that we would see something like this on prime time TV today: a variety show that devotes a lengthy segment to Stephen Sondheim with top tier Broadway talent and thus brings his work to the masses, which the skit’s premise reflects with a wink. Just terrific!

It pokes great fun of the fact that Sondheim is an acquired metropolitan taste by having a provincial diner audience of blue collar guys come in to hear a Sondheim concert, which we know they’d never do, while simultaneously putting Sondheim on popular TV show to give a taste of his and Bernadette’s and Carol’s genius.

@iKandy Do you often fantasise about imaginary butts? I know 2021's been rough, but maybe talk to somebody about that.
I’ve been in love with Bernadette my whole life! And Carol, she just blows the roof off,as always! ❤️
What a wonderful production. Not something I would have looked for, but I was completely hooked to the end.
This is so fantastic. The way they all know everything about BP. This is entertainment at its FINEST. I wish I could do this sort of thing. True talent.
I never realized how small Bernadette is.

She’s tiny!!! That’s why her vocal skills are so much more impressive
As much as I love Bernadette's voice, I never get tired of the impersonations of her - so good.

Those days of fabulous TV are long gone. Thankfully, they can be brought back with videos like this one. I could hardly believe how good it was.
Oh my----such a fun, and funny skit, with the fabulous Carol Burnett, Tony Roberts..... and the BRILLIANT singing and dancing and comedy...of the ONE and ONLY....Bernadette Peters.......who couldn't be any more talented...if she tried....
that's burnett's daugther, Jodi, playing the biker girl. She also produced this show.

I love Bernadette peters who did into the woods with Chuck Wagner and that she said it and between her Carol did Annie 1982. I love this
I love Bernadette Peters!
The customer that Carol talks to is Richard Kind.
She either has a excellent surgeon or she has brilliant genes. She looks youthful for her 70's.

Was looking for a tutorial on how to play Last Midnight from into the woods. After I saw Bernadette’s performance. Now I ended up here. I’m not complaining though XD
I loved Sondheim too. Carol Rocked.
i love bernadette and carol!!!
God hit a triple homer when he made Bernadette....♥
Oh god!! I've been looking for this video for eight years..!!! Thank you for this. You are my savior!!
Beautiful Bernadette
Bring this TV back, please
Yes the late boomers had it all in the entertainment line. I haven't watched TV in decades but back then it was wonderful. And Bernadette Peters was the bomb (with that teeny weeny mouth LOL)
What a lovely memory!

Wow ! I too accidentally ran into this video and loved it 😍! Thanks so much! This a real gem and nice touch to see picture of the great Steven Sondheim.. RIP 😥
Truly wonderful great talent and iconic composer , Would like to see more of this on TV
Stunning looker, stunning talent, stunning performer.
Carol Burnett a genuine National Treasure and icon. This is pure Carol genius and on television no less that’s what’s sad about today. We’ve lost brilliant, dazzling and clever. Thank you Bernadette and Tony. Kudos.
Bloody Brilliant!
She crushed Into the Woods
Fantastic! Sondheim is going to be missed.

Fantastic Mark.
I never saw this before! It’s sensational👨👩👧👑🌼
The metal head girl is Jessica Lundy AKA Elaine Shulman from Northern Exposure.
So the two great screen queens 👑 Bernadette and carol were also in annie 41 years ago
Thank you for the s’wonderful transfer. Comfort to Stephen Sondheim’s family.friends and fans.
This is the first time I've seen Peters tap dance.
Jokes & comedy & sass, a wonderful combination!
a medley implies more than one song
I didn’t know Ms. Peters was such a good tap-dancer!

How clever is this? It pokes great fun of the fact that Sondheim is an acquired metropolitan taste by having a provincial diner audience of blue collar guys come in to hear a Sondheim concert, which we know they’d never do, while simultaneously putting Sondheim on popular TV show to give a taste of his and Bernadette’s and Carol’s genius.
Later on, Carol would go on to sing this track again in "Putting It Together".
Carol kills me this was so much fun
before i even start watch this video. bernadette is a kicker. love carol and bernadette is off the hook. i would so of loved to lived next door to her growing up and we got to be friends wow. wat a gal. and the bird can sing and bring actual tears to my eyes. i love her, get out the gutter. i love her dammit, leave me alone.
There must be something Bernadette Peters can't do brilliantly, but I sure don't know what it is.
Richard Kind as the talkative customer!!
people the tapping is out of this world
Don't know why but I keep getting brought back to Stephen soundhim
I could do this everyday
How could they take this out of TV? HAHAHAHA That's amazing! hahahaa
Back when we had real entertainment!
Tony Roberts is the only one who’s aged…wonderful!
As good as television ever was, and sadly isn't anymore.
I miss good TV. I never turn mine on anymore.
yes i am a dork, gon on say it, DORK. feel better, i love bernadette peters with all my heart she so floats my boat. what a champion actress, comedian, singer, and i'll put money she can dance too. i feel s blessed and thankful to you tube, the internet, all this stuff we witnessed in the past and i am able to see it again. the world is going wacko and nobody knows what to do. i am not gone be miserable in spite of you, so there. i so love and appreciate the good and no time for the bad, just enough to see if i can figure a way to stop it. but, frustrating as can be, maybe i can change some things and go charles bronson on people throwing others on the tracks in ny city. thinkin bout it.
I wish i had a class photo 📸 but i went to grade school (shout outs to BERGEN STREET ELEMENTARY, they just tore it down a few years back 😢) with a girl that could pass for Bernadette's sister. And when i saw her a few years after graduation she STILL looked like her.
It's not a medley; it's one song, but well done!
Ha Ha! What a delight
Such a class act. So beautiful, sexy, and talented, and that hair!
What is this from?! I love it!!!
this episode reminds me of Northern Exposure.
